Pigbrick Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 (edited) Remember that other Nickelodeon theme that got canceled only after two sets were released? Yah, that was Avatar... I'm guessing most of you don't know the series Avatar too much or at all so I'm going to have to explain some things so you can better understand my MOC. In the world of Avatar some people have the ability to control the four elements: Water, Earth, Fire, and Air, which is called "bending." The Avatar, which the series is named after, can control all four elements. Okay, with that out of the way, here's my first MOC on Eurobricks (be gentle )! Earthbending It's!... a box. But what happens when you push down on the Minifigure? EARTH PILLARS SHOOT UP FROM THE GROUND! And the pillars stay up too! This is still a prototype and that's why it has multiple colors in it. Also I want to mention that this is only one piece of a bigger MOC I'm working on. Here's what I'm trying to make: Earth Rumble VI. Earth Rumble is "pro-westling" but with big rocks. Since the arena is a "big box" my Earthbending play feature won't stick out but will be hidden inside. Right now I'm working on the next piece of the arena which is a circle that spins in the center (it happens in the show). I also have a video clip of my MOC in action which you can watch here --> Earthbending Clip The clip will take awhile to load and it's me repeating the action three times; I thought I could edit the video to be shorter and cut some things but I found out I have no such program on my computer . But the video does show the action well so if you want to see it just be a little patient . So... what do you think ! Edit: What's Inside! Pillars taken out Spring Brick (why he pops back up) and Align Element 180 degrees piece Top view Is that a 8m cross axle in your MOC or are you just happy to see me? Edit 2: Fissure Action! Here's another fugly prototype! This prototype is about creating a crack in the ground. I'm not planning to add this in the Earth Rumble arena but keep it as a simple play feature that can be thrown in with a bigger set or something. Nothing much is happening... but what if you pull back on the minifigure? This happens! Top view of fissure The whole mechanic is simply three hinges. One is an actual hinge piece, the other is created by connecting the hinge brick with the rounded one stud brick and two stud rectangle brick, and the last one is the hinge connected to the other side of the fissure (where the minifigure is standing). The white nurple piece at the end stops the fissure from becoming too wide. Right now the fissure action is pretty ugly but I'm planning to replace the white nurple piece with maybe a plant and make the rest a little more landscapey-looking. Skinny Boy Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 Hmmmm. What an interesting creation. I would say, simple yet brilliant. But this is not simple. Are you willing to reveal how its done? I can see a few uses for it. And does it work the othere way? i.e. pulling something up makes things go down? This is all quite fascinating Quote
Dennimator Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 Wow! Can you show us some pics of the mechanism? Quote
Tim Bit Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 Wow!Can you show us some pics of the mechanism? Yes please show us pics. That is amazing. Quote

I will assume pushing down shove a piece forward and as it slides, it hits a slope on the pillars and pushes the first up, and it continually catches on the next pillar and lifts the whole set of stones up. very nice! jifel Quote
Pigbrick Posted January 4, 2009 Author Posted January 4, 2009 Yah, I can show how it works! Right now I don't have pictures taken but I should be able to put some up by today! Thanks for the replies! Quote
Pencoin Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 Great Avatar MOC, I don't think there is many here, shame cause the program isn't that bad. I don't have the sets though because I'm English. Quote
Hinckley Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 A. This is awesome. Clever build and very cool effect. B. I think it says something about how much more LEGO could've done with this license, especially considering there are 11 people viewing this topic. Licensed forum rarely has such a popular thread... oo7 Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 Yah, this is seriously clever. Perhaps it's not enough to supply a product line of dirt pillars, but it's certainly a better use for LEGO pneumatics than the trapdoors and disk shooters that where included in the sets. Brickshelf user Tanotrooper also has a nice design for the "Toph" character if you interested. A squidward torso and KKI gray-eyed head might also be in order.... Quote
Erdbeereis Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 Extremely creative. It's things like this that make me think about all of the many uses for LEGO elements. I look forward to seeing the entire MOC! Quote
Skelotic Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 I could see some great uses for this. An example is the force in Star Wars. Quote
Pigbrick Posted January 4, 2009 Author Posted January 4, 2009 Okay, I got the new pics up with the inside view. Seriously, I love the Spring Brick that the LEGO Company made awhile ago. It's no longer being made is it? It's a crying shame. I was also thinking of using this same set up for a booby trap for Indiana Jones. Yah, this is seriously clever. Perhaps it's not enough to supply a product line of dirt pillars, but it's certainly a better use for LEGO pneumatics than the trapdoors and disk shooters that where included in the sets. That's why I'm thinking of other earthbending stuff such as a fissure action and some other things. oo7, thanks for pointing out Tanotrooper's Toph character ! Thanks for the nice replies guys! Quote

I was just about to say the same thing, Hinck! This is awesome indeed, and considering its popularity, I hope this MOC will finally inspire more Avatar MOCs! Thanks for the "interior" pics! Very nice how you used the spring piece and very clever overall! I can't wait to see the final, complete arena! Edited January 4, 2009 by Oky Wan Kenobi Quote
commdr_neyo Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 what is that springpiece? I don't reconize it... Quote
WhiteFang Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 To be honest, I am not a fan of Avatar, but I must really admit that this creation is innovative in the mechanism aspects which is pretty interesting to include this feature as traps inside a maze or chamber. Well done. Quote
Siegfried Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Great idea! As Hinckley said, TLG really messed up this one... and gave up too easily. Even so, I wanted to buy some but they weren't even available to Australians... what is that springpiece? I don't reconize it... Nice isn't it? I have only a few... Quote
Pigbrick Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 I added another earthbending action to my first post. It's a "fissure action." It doesn't look pretty (neither does the first one) but it will be prettied-up later. It's simply a fun feature that I imaged that lego would have made to be thrown on the side of a bigger vechile set. Like an earthbender vs. a tank? Quote
Brickthing Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 The fissure action is ingenious as well! Congrats! As a suggestion to make it more aesthetic, what if you replaced the angled fissure parts and the hinge bricks with their 1 brick high counter parts? Quote
Oky Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 (edited) The fissure action is ingenious as well! Congrats! Seconded! It creates a very nice, lightning-shaped crack. Me like! As a suggestion to make it more aesthetic, what if you replaced the angled fissure parts and the hinge bricks with their 1 brick high counter parts? Interesting idea, but replacing the hinge piece wouldn't make much sense. And if one were to do that, one would have to make everything around the fissure mechanism a whole brick higher too. No, I think it works best with plates. I'm really liking your earthbending MOCs, Pigbrick, so keep 'em coming! Now, I can wait even less to see the complete arena! Clone Commander Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 That os really cool, and totally original. Quote
Dadster Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Very cool. I wish I could say more, but most of the "good comments" are already taken... Quote
Fezziwig Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 That's brilliant! It reminds me of the "ejector seat" in Agents Car Chase and the "exploding engine" in the Jungle Cutter from Indiana Jones , except it actually works! I'll have to tinker with some things like this! Quote
Raven Brickroft Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Great MOCs! None quite like it. If only Aang didn't have that great big smile. And, too bad AFAIK, there's no Toph minifigs. Quote
