The jungle is quiet but for the noise of birds and insects....

Slowly a noise approaches, sounding somewhat like propellors, then, from the distance, comes a small brown plane with an unshaven man...

Why is he here?

NOTE: Unfortunately, I seem to have misplaced the trans-clear 1 x 2 panel, so I have used a white one in this review, until I can replace it. Sorry!

Now, let's hack through the jungle!

Instructions

The front of the manual shows the Pontoon Plane about to land in a river, surrounded by trees and vines.

Inside, you can see the vibrant green color of the paper, which gives it a great jungle feel.

On the back are some alternate models.

Minifig

Here's the brave pilot, Harry Cane complete with a pilot's hat and stubble! I like the minifig quite a bit, especially the brown jacket with fur lining.

Some interesting parts

Two brown propellors, black window frames, a nice printed dynamite piece, a shovel and pickaxe and a few others.

Here's a comparison of the different dynamite pieces. In my opinion, the new one is far superior.

Building up the plane

The base.

Now we're getting there!

The finished plane

And now it's done! It has a very nice design for such a small set. The proportions are a bit strange, seeing as the minifig is almost as big as the wing. You can't expect much more from a small set though.

The wings are pretty well designed, and serve their purpose well. I especially like the little detail pieces under the wing.

I think the brown piece on the nose looks excellent.

This tail piece fascinates me, mainly because it looks like a little section of it broke off in the corner.

Here you can see the shovel and pick axe storage. Just 2 little clips.

pontoon_plane_012.jpg

A close-up of the propellor. Simple, but effective.

pontoon_plane_013.jpg

The set has a great sea-plane look to it, without using a gigantic amount of pieces.

Now for the ratings!

Price: 9/10 (67 pieces for $6 is a good value, especially since there are quite a few large pieces.)

Design: 8/10 (The proportions are a bit odd, but the overall design is excellent.)

Playability: 6/10 (You can swoosh it around, but not much else.)

Minifig: 7/10 (Nothing too special, but not bad at all.)

Build: 7/10 (Easy, but not redundant.)

Overall: 37/50

What kind of mechanic does this guy have?!

Conclusion

This is certainly a very good small set. Well-designed, sturdy and overall just fun. Of course, you can't give it an ultra high rating because it's pretty small, but as far as small sets go, it's excellent.

You can buy it from Bricklink at a very reasonable price, so I would definitely recommend it.

Thanks, and happy building! :classic:

Stay tuned for part 4, Mummy's Tomb!

A great plane with some very useful parts.

Also the attachment of the shovel and pickaxe is a neat play feature.

A few modifications and this could rule the World in the hands of Sam Sinister.
