Scouty Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 Hmm, this is interesting: The UK and Germany Toy Fair Press release have more coverage on these new products, but unfortunately the US will not be seeing them anytime soon as the games are to be first released in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, UK and Ireland with more countries to follow in 2010. Sounds like a replacement for Space III in some of those same countries. And it looks like those dome pieces are built on 2x2 jumper pieces! Very useful! Jumper pieces? Quote
SuvieD Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 I have been asking for something like this for a long time now. I don't care if it was fan interaction/response or something LEGO designer have been trying to get going for years, this is the only LEGO series I feel I must have. Board games and LEGO together in a wonderfully designed effort, amazing. Quote
Clonecommando007 Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Wow, this sounds great! However I won't really be impressed or motivated to buy until they come out with a Clone Wars version/expansion of the game. Quote
Legoman Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I just realised its on a 32x32 tan base! I hope these arn't too expensive. I want 4 of these for parts! Quote
Oky Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Jumper pieces? You know, this type of piece. But now it's a 2x2 plate with one stud! At least that's what it looks like to me. Quote
Huntleyfx Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Hmmm... I'm thinking microscale Indiana Jones in my future (provided I can get the sets.) And I love the idea of buildable dice, Brikwars will never be the same. I definitely find it interesting, and I hope it does well so it make the international release. Quote
LEGOscum Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Also, do I detect a new type of minifig body on the playing pieces? Nice. Funny, that's the first thing my eyes closed in on. Jeremy Quote
SuvieD Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I am a little sad I will have to wait for these but perhaps not too long. Check this quote from the article. The company insist that any family that loses a crucial building block that might render the game useless, can order a new one from their website. The games are set to go on sale this summer. That must mean every part for the games will be available on PaB online! That is something to excited about if it is true. Quote
Purplehair. Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Wow buildabale dice......Cool, probs best lego kinda piece ive come acros.. Quote

Klaus-Dieter Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I'm very, very sceptic whether this will not turn out to get a big flop! I mean: 1. If TLG releases some games, then please not 10, since there can't be enough ideas for 10 games. 2. When you read the description of the first game it says that you are allowed to make your own rules. You are allowed to make your own rules?! If it's like that, for what do I then need to buy an expensive play - I can take some bricks and build the game myself, too. 3. Lego is known for Lego sets and bricks. I'm really not sure about that many people will make the step further to buy some Lego games. Imo TLG would have done better to invest in releasing more sets, a new theme ore offering us more bricks via PaB than this. But that's of course my opinion. And it might even be that these games are sold very well. But I really doubt that. Klaus-Dieter Quote

Making up your own rules is perfect in combination with LEGO products. 3. They are constructed from LEGO bricks, this means that they are still building toys. Families love the TT games and are quite likely to get something that is more communal and less electronic. Not trying to be argumentative, but all those con's aren't really there. Quote
Snake...SNAKE...SNAAAAKE?! Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Wow!! this is actually pretty cool! Quote
Norro Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I've built a lego board for a game I designed before (long ago...) So this could be really neat, especially with some nice parts and fig things. I'm just concerned about the possible cost. God Bless, Nathan Quote

And it might even be that these games are sold very well. But I really doubt that. Klaus-Dieter I partially agree with Klaus's observations. 1) I do think that 10 is alot. Not because of idea's though, Riener Knizia (the game designer) has designed hundreds of games and sold thousands!. My concern is more about market saturation. For a new line, 10 games is alot to drop on a LEGO public not used to seeing one or two at any given time. However, if LEGO spreads out the price points, and releases them slowly, they might be able to make most of them successfull. It could also be that TLG is expecting some of them to fail and is purposefully testing the market to see which kinds of LEGO games are most popular. 2) I'm sure there will be allowances for "house rules" but with Knizia at the helm, we are definatley going to see some well wirtten game rules. 3) This is a challenge, LEGO is known for bricks. However, the German public is very receptive to games, and has a high opinion of the LEGO brand. This could be the perfect cross market product. I'm pretty sure it will do well in Germany. I'm not as confident about the rest of the world though. Of course, I'm not in Germany, so Klaus may have a better angle on this than me. As to TLG's investing in sets/themes... TLG is releasing tons of new sets already, along with 2 new themes this year, I don't think that they are neglecting that. As for PAB, it'd be nice to see some more bricks, but that's a completely different, relatively unrelated aspect of TLG. PAB selection is dependent entirely on how much people use it, and what Factory sets are released, it has little or no connection to other LEGO lines. In the end, I think that TLG has probably done their market research. I have few worries about the quality of the products or their UK/GER success, I'm just concerned that we might never see them in the USA. Edited February 6, 2009 by Eilif Quote
Front Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 (edited) I had the chance to play a couple of the games at Nürnberg, and had the rest more or less explained to me. The one I spent most time with was Minesaurus, a maze type of game. Looks promising. The number of games seems like a lot, but with the limited release in UK an Germany, TLG is testing the market. The visual appearence of the boxes are quite cool, I think they will surely grab attention in stores. All the games have rules, but ofcourse you can add and modify rules to make the game more interesting or complex. I think the really cool thing is that being built with bricks, you can just add your own and make the game board design bigger or just different. And why not just play the games with minifigures on a bigger plate ? (for the games that use plates) Endless possebilities. Front Edited February 7, 2009 by Front Quote

Well, I'm not quite sure what's supposed to be so "amazing" about them, but yeah, they are rather cute little buggers. I wonder what game they are from. Somehow they don't seem to be from that Egypt game. They kinda look like Knights. The yellow one does anyway. Castle-themed board game anyone? Quote
Shoc Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Well, I'm not quite sure what's supposed to be so "amazing" about them, but yeah, they are rather cute little buggers. I'm a minifigure obsessive, so these are amazing to me. And rather cute, yes. I wonder what game they are from. Somehow they don't seem to be from that Egypt game. They kinda look like Knights. The yellow one does anyway. Castle-themed board game anyone? The yellow one actually looks kinda like it could be a crusader or an Egyptian person, I'm not really sure, but the red on is definitely a knight! We are getting more than two types of these games, so it's likely that one would be a Castle one. :skull: Quote
Lego12 Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Awww, the minifigures are so cute! I can't wait for these board games to come out! I'll definiatly get the Egyption Board game. Thanks for sharing! Quote
Squeaker Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Interesting development. ... My wife and I love games, especially simple visually interesting ones like the one in the picture. This looks like a much better game than some of the Rose Art company LEGO games from the 90's. Those were very kiddish and for the most part pretty simplistic. This looks like it could be engaging for all ages. Finger's crossed.... Isn't it funny that RoseArt made LEGO games not that long ago, and now it it owned by MEGA, makers of M3G@BL0K5? I like the microfigs. Maybe TLG will use them as babies in system sets. Quote
JimBee Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 These sound/look... interesting. I wouldn't be surprised if they flopped, but I see some useful parts in that Egyptian one, such as the 2x2 jumper piece mentioned before. Thankfully, they'll all be 20 USD or under. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3615/332684...83eaaedc3_o.jpg These look great. I wonder if the head or torso are the same size as regular minifigs. In any case, really hope TLG will use these as baby minifigs, if the set ever calls for one. Quote
