December 19, 200816 yr Fantasy Pirates? As for the Mermaid, it's a figurehead, and the "Kraken" is just another sea animal, not anything fantasy. I am 100% against adding fantasy elements. One of the things that makes the Pirate line great is that both "sides" are minifig people.
December 19, 200816 yr I'm pretty sure we know how they're doing in the market; Pirates are the first line I've seen other than SW that Lego's put a buy limit on - now THAT'S saying something! True but I expected them all to reach the hot selling list on legoshop but none have yet - although I'm sure that'll change once the new catalog comes out and the majority of Lego fans see them.
December 19, 200816 yr I believe the mermaid on Brickbeard's Bounty is intended to be a decoration on the front of the ship, not a real mermaid. And, as far as the kraken goes it was widely believed by many sailors that there were enormous beasts that lived in the sea. Since they had seen giant octopi and squid they thought these were some kind of terrible beasts. The belief that kraken were real was part of sea lore. Now we know them as giant squid, but to the sailors back then they were ship eating monsters and were feared above all else. Just a note on the squid, there may not be all that much of a legend here is a modern day one, however it is young and small, the species could have possibly gotten smaller over time, and they arent seeen today exept in the deeper parts of the ocean due to the temperature change caused by global warming. As to the fantasy line, i hope they do not come out with one. Mega Blocks beat lego, to pirates of the carribean, and coming up with a look alike could end up with a law suit. Personally i hope they add more historical ships, and new types, such as the bomb ketch, and the xebec.
December 19, 200816 yr I really do not hope there will be fantasy pirates. The Flying Dutchman would be okay but no further magic or mysticism. It will make Lego too childish and not attractive to buy. I do believe there will be more pirate sets upcoming year but I don't even want to hope on fantasy pirates.
December 19, 200816 yr I'd be up for fantasy elements. As a matter of fact, I've already added five undead pirates (skellies with pirate hats) to my collection.
December 19, 200816 yr It will make Lego too childish and not attractive to buy. Eh well, but their main target group is, eh... children? To me, 'pirates' are just about as realistic as are dwarfs or trolls. Or cowboys and indians, for that matter. It's all part of the fairy tale world. The pirates that ones were really there were just agressive crooks on ships. The whole pirate topos from children's literature (recently revamped by Hollywood with those movies) is a big romantification of reality. So to me, it doesn't make a big difference whether they include sirens or sea monsters or if they don't - actually, I would love to see some more mermaids... I find it more important that Lego keeps is playable and modifiable. Monsters like dragons-in-one-piece (only the teeth and wings coming off) are boring. You can't build it, it's there. Same for the trolls. Big and chuncky, unpack them and make them hump around. Not much play value there. Real Lego figures should be put together, so you can actually change them and make new ones. The dwarves are excellent. Also, I don't really see why all play sets need good guys and bad guys. That is so predictable and boring. Especially with those sets where TLC already explains the whole story (Power miners) there's not much playing left to do - it's all pre-done. That doesn't stimulate the imagination much, I think. When I was little I never played with good and bad guys and didn't like fighting stuff at all. Actually I was unhappy that there was so much police stuff because the visitors of the themeparks I built always wore police and firemen suits for lack of neutral torsos....
December 19, 200816 yr Frankly, I don't think a giant squid could bring a ship down. However, this is a colossal squid!
December 19, 200816 yr I think only time will tell where Lego is gonna go with Pirates. I wouldn't bet against fantasy elements coming in though. A proper ghost ship would be awesome and i can see more mer people coming. Also can lego be too childish its primarily a toy after all. As a child i didn't give two hoots about historical accuracy i wanted sharks ghosts monsters etc.
December 19, 200816 yr Surprised no ones mentioned a ship for the Imperials yet cos thats what I'm hoping for when the next pirate sets come out. Are the imperials in the new pirate line mean't to be more land based perhaps? Modding a BB for the imperials isn't out of the question either I'm also with Ye Olde Pirate and SWMAN that fantasy elements should be at a minimum. If I see a ship come with a wizard that channels wind into the sails or ship that sails on clouds instead of water or an Orcish fleet, I'm gonna be miffed. If TLC insists on adding fantasy elements to the pirate line, keep it in the Junior +4 pirate line with the rest of the abominations
December 20, 200816 yr Frankly, I don't think a giant squid could bring a ship down. However, this is a colossal squid! proably not, but it shure would freak out the sailors. The squids were said to have faught with whales, so maybe a boat non the surface looked like whale gone up for air, and attacked it and freaked out the people onboard.

December 21, 200816 yr I think fantasy elements would be excellent for the pirate line. Excellent in that it will probably boost sales and bring a lot of young people into the Pirate scene. So long as the two major opposing forces remain pirates and imperials, I think it would fit well with the LEGO pirate "tradition". If you don't want a sea serpent attack, don't buy it.
December 21, 200816 yr Sorry if this is seen as getting ahead of things but I'm interested in seeing what the Pirate faithful are thinking. In light of Castle's move to "fantasy" (Orks, Trolls and Skellies) do you think we'll see Fantasy Pirates? Take advantage of the popularity of Pirares of the Carribean? I know that Lego has already dipped in the fantasy pool with the Mermaid and "Kracken" etc. But I'm thinking full on dedication to a seafaring faction on fishmen or ghouls or what have you. well you probably notice the dynamite, in that time they didnt have it yet! So yeah, they probably add in some fantasy and see what it will do. Think you'll see new hair types aswell soon, perhaps second half of 2009 or start 2010. Anywayz, yeah, they will add a few things from movies like pirates of the carabian and add in other fantasy things
January 2, 200916 yr I dont like the new castle line myself, but then i am more into the whole historical part of it
January 2, 200916 yr Ghost Ships were believed to be real back in the day. Hence: Davy Jones, all ships sunk by Davy Jones was said to be sent to Davy Jones locker. And skeleton ships/Ghost Ships are about the same as The Flying Dutchman.
