Hi, im new to the forum but not new to legos... ;)

I havent seen much of the new ones and I wonderd if these sets are as good as the onld ones. ex. The new pirate ship looks a little simple and has poor color quordination in my opinion. Perhaps it was just a bad pic. But wht ado you guys think about it all? One good thinhg i have seen though and that is that the sets come with alot more mini-figs. :)

Me and my brother used to make movies out of legos particularly pirate movies. So I am rather picky on the detail, realism, and and color quardination. I was also wondering if one could blend the 2 sieres together? Or would it look rather odd and out of plaece due to the differnt plastic textures and colors.

I don't have the ship yet, so I cannot comment on that; but I can tell you that old and new pirates do work together. With a little bit creativity, plus Bricklink, the Imperial Guards also go well with new Imperials. (I just promoted my old Guards to officer so they would fit in.) I also can say that the new sets are just as good, if not better than the old sets.

Thanks, thats good to hear. True, i can blend, just use some creativity.

Well, the new sets are definately not nearly as good as the old ones (and you can easily get the old ones for better prices than the new ones). The sets don't look "finished" and some elements look very <insert that tiresome argument>/childish, like the palmtree, skull&crossbones design etc. (but hey, it is originally a kid's toy).

But the new line does bring some very nice accesoires (flame piece, telescope), and most new minifigs are awesome, allthought I have a hard time combining the new and old minifigs, but maybe I just have to get used to it.

"<insert that tiresome argument>/childish" yes that I will agree with, maybe we should get a petition to get the sets alittle more sophisticated. But on the other hand it is a childs toy as you have stated. I saw some of the pictures, there not all that bad but I will agree they are a bit "<insert that tiresome argument>/childish".

I have quite a few new sets now, and i must say i like them.

The design is quite good, and some of the parts and especially the figs are awesome.

The only thing i really dislike about the ship are the yards made out of rigid hose, it doesn't feel solid.

Despite that, they are definitly worth it!

Well, you can always change the colours/design of the old sets and keep the idea of them:

Modified Imperial Trading Post combined with Soldier's Fort

the sets are okay but are a bit weak as my friends ship smashed to pieces when he dropped it (by accident of course). lego could do better but im glad to see some pirates again!

I like the new sets...but they just don't have that charm that the old ones have.

Have you check out our 2009 Pirate Set Reviews? They provide dozens of pictures which examine each the new set in quite horough detail.

As far as I'm concerned, the two lines a perfectly compatible. Whilst many people are looking down the route of how the new Imperials fit in with the old ones in military/army building terms, the lines work together, as far as I'm concerned. True, the older sets don't have as realistic a colour scheme, or as useful as part selection, but it's the minifigs which bring them together. No 2 pirates should be identical, in my opinion, so an improved range of faces, torsos and hats (dark green rag hat, new bicorn prints) allow for a more interesting crew. The torsos from the later classic pirates sets are more compatible, as their patterns are more modern than the very first ones, but I think that they can all be used. The new ones also have a recurring "torn" feature, which could be used (along with Ironhook's torso) to have an opposing fleet of more scruffy dudes.

The colours can be used together, although there's a discrepency about the underlying colour schemes. In the classic line, it rotates around light grey, black and yellow (for sand), with another few colours for trim between sets. In the new line, there is far more bley, brown and tan, with varying trims for imperials and pirates. I would go with the new colour palette in this instance, but the trim can come from either (green )

The plastic texture doesn't bother me at all.

I believe they are compatible with one another piece wise that is, But I find the torsos don't go all that well together :pir-sceptic:

P.S Don't think that I don't combine the torsos cause I do :pir-grin:

As I am a fan of the old pirates, I think the new pirates are a nice addition to a pirate collector. One thing that I think TLC should do is making so more sets for the Imperial guard. For example, if they were to make something like the Caribbean Clipper or some sort of Imperial Guard related ship. But the new pirates look much more detailed and nicer than the old ones, but I still like the old ones better.

Other than the fact that the minifigs' faces are merrier in the old sets and angrier in the new sets, I don't see any incompatibility :pir-classic:

IMO the most important compatibility issue is that the old and new ships' bases can be combined together (so at least they should have similar widths).

I'd say they're absolutely compatible. The colour palette is different, but not every ship/imperial port has to be the same colour. It's all up to imagination really, and the more torsos/hats/faces you have to choose from, the better.

I think they are qutie compatible. For me the key is the same as with other lines. Mixing up some of the newer heads and headgear with older minifigs and older heads and headgear with newer figs is the way to make them all look more alike. As for the sets themselves, I don't see much in the way of incompatibility, even with the somewhat different color schemes.
