The Amsterdam was an East Indiaman built for transport between the Dutch Republic and the settlements and strongholds of the Dutch East India Company in the East Indies. On an outward voyage these ships carried guns and bricks for the settlements and strongholds, and silver and golden coins to purchase Asian goods. On a return journey the ships carried the goods that were purchased, such as spices, fabrics, and china. In both ways the ships carried victuals, clothes, and tools for the sailors and soldiers on the ship. On an outward voyage of eight months, the ships were populated by around 240 men, and on a return journey by around 70. The ship started its maiden voyage from Texel to Batavia on 8 January 1749, but was wrecked in a storm on the North Sea on 26 January 1749. The shipwreck was discovered in 1969 in the bay of Bulverhythe, United Kingdom, and is sometimes visible during low tides. (source Wikipedia)

Two weeks ago, myself, Captain Green Hair and the Errorist visited the replica of the Amsterdam. Here's a collection of pictures of our visit. The 2 pictures at the end show an impression of the city of Amsterdam and the maritime museum (last one) which is housed in a former naval storehouse.

Awesome trip you guys had! The Amsterdam is such a cool ship. YnyklY and me have been at this beauty before and it was great.

You've made some nice pictures too! My favorite is the 3rd and the last picture.

Have you been in the naval storehouse as well? There are some aswesome ship models there and much more nice stuff. :pir-blush:

I suddenly notice the stairs to the poop deck have a different colour. :pir_laugh2:

Looks like a Brilliant ship! :pir-oh3:

Some how looks smaller than I expected for a ship like that...

And those houses full of water outside...Are they supposed to be Inaccessible? :pir-sceptic:

Wow. I bet you had fun! That looks like a great ship. Very detailed and it looks like the real thing.

Nice pics. remind me of my own trip there in 2007 . have several pics from the ship and the museum. imagine me, a blue eyed fellow from north Norway om my own in amsterdam looking for the ship, and i found it :pir_laugh2: all the others thought i would get lost :pir-tongue:

I liked the museum as i could get close to cannons and carronades and se details of a ship that i couldnt se in a pic. Hope you to had a nice trip to Amsterdam. liked that city.

Excellent pictures B!

Where's the one you were at the wheel trying to steal it?

In your description you say it carried bricks for the strongholds, but those were available locally in the indies.

Oak trees were also planted in the indies to build houses and repair ships.

It ransported workers, troops and money for the colonies on the trip over.

And back, next to all the goods you mentioned, they transported opium.

The opium is what got us rich in the first place, not the spices or slaves everybody always talks about.

The houses build at the water are part of the old harbour.

I'm not sure if docks used to be there, but it makes accessing small boats to get to ships, or get goods from the ships into the buildings easy.

A rather impressive ship, it seems to be hard to find reference for cargo ships (Warships get all of the glory!) Thank you for sharing!

Looks great Bonaparte! I bet you had a brilliant time with the others. But then, what else could you have had with two other brilliant LEGO MOCers?

I note that the helm is situated below the poop deck, which is interesting to know after your Ship's Wheel Positioning thread. Anyway, thanks for showing us this, it will become inspiration for my next carg ship no doubt.

That's cool, I visited the Amsterdam for the second time nearly 3 weeks ago.

And how did you gentlemen like the ship? I must admit I was rather dissapointed when I visited it the first time.

Nice pictures, I hadn't seen the Amsterdam from these angles yet!

I found her a bit disappointing but that was mainly because of the exterior. The interior was done pretty decently though.

Of course she's not the Batavia but don't let that spoil your fun :pir-tongue:

I concur! Where is that picture? :pir-tongue:
