Penitent Tangent Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 Normally I'm more a fan of the Clone Wars sets, but I really don't find any of the new ones all that appealing.. Though I'd probably be a bigger fan of the Y-wing if it had a more original selection of mini-figs. The Venator is great, but as I already have the Star Destroyer it's not something I think I'll bother with, and again the choice of minifigs leaves something to be desired.. But the Echo Base and Endor sets are really amazing, can't wait to see what they've done with the Millenium Falcon. Quote
KimT Posted January 17, 2009 Author Posted January 17, 2009 I think the issue with the Y-wing containing yet another Anakin, Ahsoka & R2D2 is just something we have to live with. When parents buy LEGO for their children, they look for the known and famous characters from the animated TV series. (The ones their offspring keep talking about) and that would be those 3. This is why we'll be getting waaay too many Anakins (in an AFOL sense). But for LEGO it, the continous adding of those, means more sales. Which parent would buy a Y-Wing for the children if it didn't have the core characters? - Noone. So we (the fans and collectors) just have to live with it. Personally I shove any extra I get into my BL store. Quote

The new OT sets, especially Endor, are giving us different and new figures. Yup, but back in the start of the SW theme we were given a zillion Jar Jars, R2D2's and Lukes. So it's nothing new that they're spraying us with the famous characters. OT has reached a point where the sheer amount of sets available and the time of being produced ensures that every fan (regardless of fan level / insanity) has been able to get the theme characters. Now the OT seems to be more about getting the people what the peolple want. = sets which include important parts of the story. (Endor, Hoth, DS and so forth). Let's hope this continues when the anniversary year is over - though I see no reason for TLG to reintroduce Luke. New fans don't care about a character invented more than 30 years ago and I fully understand that. I grew up watching Star Wars (I was born in 1976) and therefore the OT means something special to me. But if I was 19-20 years today, then I guess I'd be all CW instead. It's all a question of timing. - And since they're not rereleasing the OT in a new new new version, I guess we'll soon see the end of that as a subtheme, except for a few special sets each year intended on AFOLs, hardcore fans and for those who'd want to add a little something to their CW collection. KimT Posted January 17, 2009 Author Posted January 17, 2009 You goddam right. And noticing it yourself, keeps you out of the chamber this time. I'll move this to the proper topic, since you're aware of the mistake. Quote
RDG31 Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 I think that the venator class republic cruiser looks amazing can't wait to get it . Really like the separatist shuttle too. Quote
TheBrickHitHouse Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 The new AAT looked awful from the prelim pics - but the actual set is great ...the new sets dont look great, but I'm going to give them the chance they deserve - Lego are not great photographers and usually pick the worst angle to show their sets 5 figs for the Venator is just baffling - wouldnt an Admiral mini fig have made sense? I think everyone here agrees that the fig count and selection is a little off. Sadly I am sure that they are the figs we're getting - no more - no other Quote
Darth Legolas Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 In the final version of the Y-wing, I wonder if they'll change the bubble turret to dark trans-clear, instead of light trans-clear. It would be odd if they didn't, also, did anyone read my comment about Lok Durd? Don't be surprised if you might not get Nute Gunray, but we need a clearer picture first! On the Sep Shuttle, it looks like the landing gear is the same kind of pieces as on the Delta-7B's, except for the fact that is bends in the weird position to fold up. It also looks like there's an opening in the back for figs to "get out," even though the only real way to do that is with the big top opening. Quote
Hotshot Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 I don't know if this is new. Inn this pic i see that the clones have jetpacks: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=3652525 Quote

DarthSion Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 Its supposed to be Anakins Y-wing so of course he will be in it. Quote
Derek Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 Oh, Did any of you happen to see the pics of the summer '09 sets on Brickshelf? Ok just kidding. But like KimT said about Anakin and Ahsoka (R2 as well I guess), They are the main characters, and they are going to be in a lot of sets. I would prefer a clone pilot, but oh well. Indiana Jones was in every Indy set. At least we have more CW sets without Anakin and Ahsoka than we do with them... Quote

And still, I find the OT much better than the PT. they were more consistent and about characters whereas the new ones (and now CW) just focus on feeding your eyes with incredible action scenes after incredible action senes and they completely forget about having a cohesive background to base them on... And the more I see CW the more I feel sad about that...(although the last 2 episodes were finally going back the right way. I hope it'll continue like that) But then again, I've always been a weird one At least, That'll make my wallet happy, because now I'll only getthe sets that look good and not care about what it's supposed to be. (except for the OT sets that keep being fantastic looking... ) I like it, because that was the state of mind I was in before they started making star wars sets. But because of the price of the licence, I had to stop getting other themes. Now I might just start again. Especially considering that the designers are going through the roof with the city sets lately. And I can't wait to see more news from the Space Police. Anyway, I have to say that the new separatist shuttle do look interesting. I like what I'm seeing so far. The Y-wing, I'm not so sure. I'll reserve judgement untill I see better pics. Although there seems to be some nice greeble on it. The OT sets are fantastic. That new AT ST is just and finally we have a Taun Taun. And for a very nice price (though it seems rather low to me, considering how high they're getting lately... But I'll keep my fingers crossed) Quote
Skipper 24 Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 As soon as my internet crashes for a few days all you guys unearth all these new set pics without me ( ) Anyway here's my view on the new sets 7748 Snail Tank: The clones could have a new torso front, new jet pack pieces would have been better (could still change), includes 2 Battle droids and Clones. £25-30 7749 Echo Base: Great new taun taun, 4 Hoth minifigs, an easy way to get these minifigs, includes Han Solo, nice little turrets. £10-15 8036 Sepratist Shuttle: Possible Nute Gunray, return of blue pilot droid (I think), 3 battle droids . £25-35 8037 Anakin's Y-wing Starfighter: Ahsoka, Anakin and R2, new yellow printed cockpit piece. £40-50 8038 The Battle of Endor: Loads of great minifigures, 2 new ewoks, Leia and rebels in camo, Han Solo and Chewbacca, similar to 7676 RAG speeder bikes, bunker and ewok catapult, new AT-ST. £70-80 8039 Republic Cruiser "Venator": Opens to play inside, new Palpatine, new senate guards, clone gunner and trooper. £80+ Quote

Tohst Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 well, I'm 25 and I discovered Star Wars when Episode 1 came out. And the more I see CW the more I feel sad about that...(although the last 2 episodes were finally going back the right way. I hope it'll continue like that)But then again, I've always been a weird one I'm 35 so, yes, I gravitate more to the OT. However, I'm old enough to have friends that have kids that like Star Wars (my own is still a little young at 1 month). And I see the same spectrum in kids that I do in adults. Some like the new stuff, some like the old stuff. Many like everything and would be as happy with a Luke as with an Anakin. It is definately more tilted towards the newer stuff than amongst adults but even the ones that are hyper Clone Wars addicts know who Luke is. However, to pull this perhaps a little back to topic. KimT, yes, it makes a lot of sense for the kid collectors to have the minifigs in the Y-wing be those three principal characters. However, and this is something I argue about all the time, wouldn't it make more sense to absorb the cost of throwing in a pilot or something like that so there is more appeal to the adult collector...in addition. Like the old AT-AT. Another Luke Pilot figure. Yawn for me. Exciting for a parent or kid. 2 Snowtroopers and an AT-AT driver. May or may not add excitement for the parent or kid but I'm buying multiple copies. Side note: If my kid doesn't like Star Wars at all I think I may cry. -Tohst - Give me a break, I'm a new dad. Everything comes around to the kid. Quote

Yeah, I definitely understand the reason for them doing this, and I certainly wasn't trying to complain and say we should have someone else, but the fact it is just those same three again does turn me off the set. Even having just one unique minifig there might have made it a little more appealing. Didn't they use that "Goldie" R2 unit in the Y-wing episodes? Quote
JimBee Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 Excellent, new pics! The Snail Tank looks pretty good to me. Good size, good color scheme... and 216 pieces probably means that it will be 20 USD. I am puzzled as to why you guys like the Tank Droid. In my opinion it's the worst of the upcoming sets. It's small and the deisgn leaves me nothing but a sour stomach I love the "old" version and this one could have been great. It's just so small... I'm thinking that it's just the angle of the picture that makes the set look so small. I know I've already expressed my opinions on the Hoth set, but it looks like the Hoth Rebels have a new hat mold, instead of the pilot helmet with goggles. The Nemodian Shuttle looks really neat; very sleek, and the right size. I see three battle droids, a probable Nute Gunray (in the orange and red), and what looks like a Rodian. I'm wondering about that last figure, though, because the battle droids appear to be holding the Rodian captive. I thought that the Rodians were allied with the CIS in the T.V. show, but what do I know? 259 pieces suggest 20 or 30 USD, a nice medium sized set. The CW-styled Y-Wing looks pretty accurate, but I can't say that I like the design. Seeing the yellow-white color scheme in Lego is unattractive, at least on this set. I can't say that I like the minifig choice, either, but I know TLG's reasons for doing so. At least we get a newly printed windshield, but for 50-60 USD, this doesn't even come close to being a "might buy" set. The Venator looks a lot better now; it's not nearly as stubby or small as it was, and now it looks like a potential set. I'm not extremely satisfied with the figs, but I must admit that Palpatine and the Senate guards looks fantastic. Has anybody else noticed that the original picture that we had of the venator had a "stickered" republic emblem, and the new pictures we have show the venator without this? Naw, they really are the classic space jet packs. Would have liked a new mold, but they serve their purpose. Remember, these are still preliminary, so anything could change. Quote
Mr Spielbrick Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 It's all a question of timing. - And since they're not rereleasing the OT in a new new new version, I guess we'll soon see the end of that as a subtheme, except for a few special sets each year intended on AFOLs, hardcore fans and for those who'd want to add a little something to their CW collection. You think SW will turn into CW? I hope not... Either next year or 2011 should see the start of a new live action tv series, based on secondary characters from the SW universe. It's said to take place between III and IV. Now, I'm not sure when exactly... But even if they start right after III, sooner or later they'll be nearing the IV - V - VI aesthetic. Which gives me hope that not all new sets will be PT / CW related. IF the licence is renewed at all, that is... Anyway, that's for the 2011 Picture and Rumour Topic. Now for 2009: The new new pictures (CW sets) are miles away from making me jump in my chair like the Endor and Hoth sets. The Separatist Shuttle is the only one that looks cool to me. And that's probably because it was in III and because it's still unclear which figs come with it. The umpteenth Anakin / Ahsoka set (two jedi starfighters, the Twilight and now another chance to get these two?!) doesn't excite me one bit. The Venator looks kind of cool, but the fig selection seems a bit meagre. As for the jetpack clones... Meh. We got our battlebacks this month, no need for more in my opinion. Bring on the absolutely gorgeously wonderfully Mother of All Battlepacks HOTH and the even absoluter gorgeouser wonderfuller Mother of All Location-Based Playsets ENDOR! Quote
