February 17, 200916 yr .....are there any things I should do or keep in mind? Well... Just remember to alway look to the right and to the left before crossing the street... Sorry, I just had to... On topic: I think when you want to create such an army, stacking up on the impulse set with the orc-ish creature would be a good start.
February 17, 200916 yr Just keep an eye on good deals/sales (it would be a waste to pass up on them if you see them before you get the fortress). You might also want to start making an army of another faction, 1 big army of orcs and noone to fight would probably be a bit boring.
February 17, 200916 yr Author I think when you want to create such an army, stacking up on the impulse set with the orc-ish creature would be a good start. Well normally, that would be the case, but the Orc impulse isn't sold anywhere where I live, and Bricklink and S@H doesn't seem to have any in the UK. So, I'll just have to buy the minifigs and weapons separately via Bricklink. It doesn't really matter anyway: the impulse doesn't include the Orc shield. You might also want to start making an army of another faction, 1 big army of orcs and noone to fight would probably be a bit boring. True, but then that'd mean I'd have to buy another castle (it's not really fair sides if one side has a big fort, while the other has nothing, is it now? ) and I seriously don't wanna buy something that'll take up MORE space in my room. I dunno...I might build up a medium-size Redcoat army to go with the Soldier's Fort I plan on buying and have the ultimate Pirates vs. Castle war! Bluebeard, out-
February 17, 200916 yr Don't forget Orc's are miserable, crafty and vicious beings... And Orcs eat all manner of flesh, including human... Keep that in mind when you have them as an army...
February 18, 200916 yr The Troll Impulse sets are a great way to build an army. I just picked up 30 of the Troll Impulse sets this past weekend at Walmart, on clearance for $1.25 ea.
February 18, 200916 yr Author The Troll Impulse sets are a great way to build an army. Not really. I mean, if you want them to have shields (as I do), you'll still need to buy them off Bricklink. Besides, as I said before, I can't find them anywhere. Bluebeard, out-
February 18, 200916 yr But why do you want to build an army of trolls? What is the reason? Do you want to just show them off? What will you do with a hundred troll minifigs? Do you really want to spend your money on a bunch of identical minifigs, when you could buy sets? I just don't understand this army-building hobby. Sure, they look nice, but after taking some photos of your collection, what do you do with them? Leave them to dust and take space? I don't know, I kind of understand showcasing big and rare sets (although I'd much rather just use the pieces to build something), and I understand collecting those Warhammer etc. figurines for roleplaying purposes, and I understand collecting different types of minifigs, but I just can't see the glory of owning a hundred identical minifigs. Can someone explain it to me, please?
February 18, 200916 yr Author What will you do with a hundred troll minifigs? A HUNDRED?! No, no, no...I was thinking more along the lines of 60 - 65. Do you really want to spend your money on a bunch of identical minifigs, when you could buy sets? Ah...now you see, next year I don't plan on buying any new LEGO and I may sell some LEGO too, but I wanted to do this because I've never done a project like this and thought it might be fun to try something new. Don't worry, if by the time I've bought 20 of them I'm sick of it, I'll throw in the towel, but if not, I'll carry on. Bluebeard, out-

Can someone explain it to me, please? I agree. The only reason I think people do this is A: for a large-scale diorama and B: to see if they can. I enjoy building up my Clone and Battle Droid armies but only buy buying other sets. I am not willing to spend money just for figures from Bricklink.
February 18, 200916 yr Author Some good news: I've found an amazing deal on the Troll Warship, so I'm gonna buy two of those (after selling my Imperial Flagship, of course) as a start. Bluebeard, out-
February 18, 200916 yr The Troll Impulse sets are a great way to build an army. I just picked up 30 of the Troll Impulse sets this past weekend at Walmart, on clearance for $1.25 ea. Awesome! Wish the local WMs had theirs on discount. As far as army building is concerned, I'm amassing an army to display and play with. I plan to rebuild castles, courtyards, and dungeons after awhile. Having factions of armies (knights, skellies, dwarves and troll) enables greater play in my opinion.
February 19, 200916 yr Unfortunately if you want a troll army that is large and well armed you have to pay decent money for them right now. I just picked up 30 troll impulse sets from a lego store for half off as well. My current troll army numbers at about 100 figs but I am looking to triple that size. I agree that the troll impulse set is disappointing for the lack of a shield. Right now I am being patient and waiting for the best sets for army building to go on sale later. I still have hope that a troll battle pack will come out in the future. If I ever catch the large chess set on sale at 50% off I will buy 10 on the spot. I want to expand my dwarf army as well. I just don't understand this army-building hobby. Can someone explain it to me, please? Since my armies number in the 3250 to 3500 fig range right now. I can only say that I am a sick sick man. I have armies of 50 to 400 figs from every faction lego ever released in the castle line. I also have a bunch of custom factions in smaller army sizes from 25 to 50 members each. What do I do with them... I am making a huge diorhamma in my garage of a castle kingdom and they will be the figs to populate it. In the meantime I have them all lined up on green 16 x 32 plates in units of about 25 troops each. I keep them in boxes so they don't collect dust. Can you imagine cleaning them all? You might ask if he has 100 trolls why would he need more? Well I am kinda crazy about keeping my factions in similar sizes. My skeles number about 300 and the crownies are about 350. I want a troll army to be somewhat the equal of the skeles and crownies. I just wish they would stop selling the crownies in all of their sets as I keep getting more and more of them and I don't want their faction to get any larger. As for selling my extra minifigs. This is out of the question. I get almost all of my figs in sets and the resale value for the sets drops if they are not complete. If I sell off my lego someday it will be as sets so I can get the most money back for them. In the meantime I use the figs and the sets for the parts they contain. I have been collecting figs and the castle line as a whole going on 20 years now. It took me a couple of months just to set up these figs into cohesive units with varied weaponry and heraldry. I agree with many that it doesn't take as much talent to put together vast armies as it does a good MOC, but it does take some imagination to put them together and make them look good. It also takes a great deal of money, especially if you are collecting older figs that are not in current production. I do have to admit I love that my armies catch the eyes of children and some of the adults as well at the conventions. I think if it brings a smile and its lego it must be a good thing.
February 20, 200916 yr DaleDVM, I don't know what to say... I admire your passion for armies, but what comes to understanding your hobby, I'm still not making any progress. I just wish they would stop selling the crownies in all of their sets as I keep getting more and more of them and I don't want their faction to get any larger. This line just makes me wanna say "are you daft?" or something. If you don't want to increase your Crownie army, it's all your decision. Nobody - I mean, nobody - is forcing you to put any more soldiers on green plates than you yourself want to. If you have extra minifigs and don't want to sell them, just put them away. Don't include them to your army. I can't believe you are making this a problem for yourself. You don't have OCD, do you? Gosh, men... I often times can only shake my head on how "tube-minded" you are...
February 20, 200916 yr With the Troll's Dark Fortress coming later this year, I have decided to create an Orc army.Though I'm only gonna start on this project after I get the fortress, are there any things I should do or keep in mind? Bluebeard, out- Hey! I started the same way nearly 3 years ago. I bought 30-40 castle sets and then started building up an army. I purchased many parts from Bricklink and now I am pushing towards as many as 1000 minifigs of which 95% are castle and the other 5% are pirates. Things to keep in mind when building an army: 1. How many minifigs you want to have-how big of an army you really want. 2. How many factions you want/need - what happened to me is that I kept adding more and more factions and now I have around 15 different factions. While it is nice to have variety it will also boost up the price by a huge margin. I spent at least $7,000 so far. 3. Take your time-this is a big one. Patience is a key for a real collector. Dont just jump in and start buying stuff, wait for the right price-while it is nice to get everything at once, it also losses its magic. Ive been collecting for over 3 years now and three are still some sets that I am shopping for. Can I buy them now? Sure thing. I choose not to and take my time with it, it makes it more fun. Hope this helped Ciao

So your the one that beat me there :) . I live in Bartlett (near Elgin). I was in the day before but only had enough money for 5 Troll Warriors and a tic tac toe set. When I came back later with more money, the day after, they were sold out. At least I know they went to a good home :). I use my extra crownies for other factions. I just print out stickers, and press them on. I can easliy remove them if I ever need to. If you ever come across another sale like that, please feel free to drop me a line after you have grabbed all you need. I'll be certain to do the same. Thanks in advance. Ahab out..............
February 21, 200916 yr It's the male collectors gene. I mean.. our parents? Pictures of moviestars and people collected and traded and sorted them meticously. I can see the beauty in just having... a massie army. It doesn't have to do anything, the figs don't have to have any other function - just seeing them standing there in lines, maybe rearange them... ok so we're sick, or what? I wish my army was bigger
February 21, 200916 yr I'm up to 24,000 minifigs with about 14,000 in castle. It's a sickness. Mad props for that mate. Post some pics. Id love to see that collection....ha and I thought that I was bad hahaha.
February 23, 200916 yr The Troll Impulse sets are a great way to build an army. I just picked up 30 of the Troll Impulse sets this past weekend at Walmart, on clearance for $1.25 ea. LOL, darkagent, I am insanely jealous of this find. Unforutnatley there's no 'crazy eyes' icon to demonstrate this. Having been waiting for LEGO to release middle earth-ish figures for about twenty years, it kills me that the 'impulse' figures run for over $3. ~Medievalego~
February 25, 200916 yr I'm up to 24,000 minifigs with about 14,000 in castle. It's a sickness. That sir, is truly amazing. I'm incapable of any other speech at the moment.
February 25, 200916 yr That sir, is truly amazing. I'm incapable of any other speech at the moment. I believe a photo of this huge collection is warranted! Such claims are outlandish other wise good sir!
February 25, 200916 yr I have seen DaleDVM's collection, at least a portion of it...He ain't lyin'!!!! He has a huge army. Otherwise, Bluebard, just keep on doing what you are doing. Look for the sales and deals; that's your best bet if you can't get a hold of the impulse sets.
February 25, 200916 yr I've never been the kind of guy to get more than ten of the same kind of minifig, and even then it's usually because I'm collecting a theme... When I buy individual minifigs from bricklink it's to get rare/awesome minifig parts for my personal projects. I rarely buy more than one. But the only advice I can give you is to buy lots rather than individuals- they tend to be a better deal. Ebay is your friend.
