Saracen Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Now I'm no trainspotter, but to me this looks a LOT like the new old steam engine, the Tornado, that rail enthusiasts in Britain built. I'm not sure if this adds or detracts from credibility, but it would makes sense as some sort of commemorative set, seeing as the Tornado is the first steam engine to be built in the UK in fifty years. Here's hoping! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7876162.stm Quote
Dragonator Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 This is surely going to be a must have for me. I'm a great train enthusiast, and I may have missed the Santa Fe sets, but I am surely not going to miss this beauty. Quote
jonwil Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 (edited) If this is real (and its comming out when the rumor says it is), our train club will HAVE to get one to run (or modify and run) on our layout. Also, the reason why the picture looks so crap is because someone somewhere converted it (likely from a jpeg or other true-color image) to a gif image which is why all the colors look so washed out and stuff. Tinn-man Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 (edited) The only thing I don't like about this set is the front looks too big, but that can be easily fixed. I'm so glad that TLC finally made an 8-wide train, but I wonder if they will make wider rails, or use the same width as the old trains? EDIT: also just realized that this is not a real train Edited February 15, 2009 by Tinn-man Quote
hollisbrick Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Sorry to say but I feel that it is fake I don't know why but there is something about it which makes it look fake... But I'll happily eat my words if it is real! I really like it! If it is released at the shops I will get it I've always wanted to get a train set Quote
Cale Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 I think some one is pulling a fast one on you guys. There are some thing that look peculiar. The drivers. If these are Ben Fleskies (it's hard to tell from the photo) wheels then what is that red stripe around the tire next to the flange? And if not Bens it seems odd that LEGO would be willing to tool up a brand new mold for steam when in recent years any steam they have done has use the standard train wheels. They are using the RC Train wheels for the pilot truck. If they are willing to tool a new mold for the drivers then why reuse the RC Train wheels (complete with traction tires)? It just seems weird. New 1x2 Curved Slopes used on the smoke lifters? I do bad bad things to get this part but it seems suspect. What part are they using for the stack? I don't recognize it. If it's a new mold then that combined with the other stuff is a lot of new tooling for one set. New molds aren't cheap. The sides of the fire box just look odd. The upper sides of the boiler as well. As a steam fan I would love nothing more than for this to be a real set but I'm just to skeptical. I hope I'm proven wrong. Cale Quote
Captain Zuloo Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Captain Zuloo wants!!! If this is a fake, then I hope TLG sees this thread and decides to produce a set similar. Although I would be happy to pay $300 + for this set. It looks awesome!!! Thanks for the find. Quote
FASTER345 Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 First post so please...be kind. :) I really hope this set is one of the Summer 2009 sets that we have been promised since the demise of the great and final 'Crocodile' of 2007. Please LEGO make more trains! They are the greatest fun ever...and I have some from the late 70's that I bought when traveling through Europe. My RC trains often run on my blue tracks with white sleepers...what were they thinking with the color choices there??? Cheers. Quote
Brickadier General Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 (edited) If this is real it's going to be mighty dang expensive, especially judging by the projected price in Euros. I know that one of the reasons Lego discontinued 9 Volt trains was due to the costs of paying an outside party to put the metal on the tracks, but I thought they also rationalized it because the 9 Volt line wasn't selling very well. That's why I almost can't see this as being real. While it would definitely be targeted at AFOLs, I can't really seeing it doing well with the general public. It has too much going against it. While it does look cool, the thing would likely cost over $100 US, you only get an engine, tender, and one car, and there is no track. Like I said, I know it might do well with the AFOL community, but outside of that I really don't see much of a market for it. And I'm having a hard time being convinced about flex track. Wouldn't that actually end up costing consumers more than the current line of track? I'll wait and see, but I'm not convinced until there's some more tangible evidence. -Negative Nancy signing off Edited February 15, 2009 by Brickadier General Quote
paksu Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 (edited) What? 1100 SEK?? That's very expensive. If this is real it's going to be mighty dang expensive, especially judging by the projected price in Euros. How is 100 euros for 1085 bricks expensive, especially for a beautiful display model? I thought the consensus is that one euro for ten bricks is an OK price. Even if it doesn't have a motor, that price would be very similar to 10183 Hobby Train. Sure, the modular buildings, for example, can provide a better price/brick ratio, but trains typically contain plenty of large, specialised bricks. The fact that all the admins as well as our ambassador believe in this makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. Edited February 15, 2009 by paksu Quote
pe668 Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 FAKE There's a history of April fools day train releases on 1000steine.de. Anyone remember the infamous Ben Beneke catalogue (March 2000)? It created a big fuss on Lugnet. http://mitglied.lycos.de/legoit/herbst2000.html Very nice looking MOC, I would like to see more photo's of it. Quote
paksu Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 (edited) FAKEThere's a history of April fools day train releases on 1000steine.de. Starting to hype about it as early as in January doesn't - to me - really sit well with the definition of an April fools' joke. If it indeed is such a con, I'd find setting the thing up this early to be in very poor taste. Edited February 15, 2009 by paksu Quote
WhiteFang Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 This train is a beauty! Personally, I feel that this could be as real as we discuss, and if its indeed a real set, this could be my very first train set in my collection. Quote
pe668 Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 I'd be quite happy to be proven wrong, it would make a nice addition to Lego trains. It has more merrit after reading this: Based on the outcome of this workshop and all the other fantastic input we got from the AFOL community over the last six months, our designers worked on the first train set using the new Power Functions system. This set will be truly aimed at the AFOL community to acknowledge the importance of the adult LEGO hobbyists in the LEGO train world. This communication will be the last one regarding the transition from the 9V train system into the new Power Functions train system, Due to all the very valuable AFOL feedback we are far down the road with the development of the new elements and also the new train set. We appreciate all your efforts through this transition which we expect to be fully executed in 2009. Stay tuned for the new LEGO train system coming in 2009. Mirandir Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 (edited) Got confirmation that this is for real a while ago. It will most likely be a S@H Exclusive in Sweden. Releasdate is set to 1 april. According to info in the confirmation it seemed like there were a small possibility of a delay until may. EDIT: Some info removed on request by LEGO... Edited February 18, 2009 by Mirandir Quote

Klaus-Dieter Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 (edited) as this set really is not factory set. there is no rails and engine but fall to me that new parts used. I saw on the Internet that this set will cost around 110 euro if it is real. but lego is busy everyone happy face different sets will be trains, city, starwars, castle, and much more. I wonder if there are more trains will Thank you very much for that information, legomilk! Around 110 Euros?! - That's really expensive! Firstly I of course decided to buy this set. But now I don't know. I mean: 110 Euros for an engine, a tender, one passenger waggon and three minifigs - that's really a lot of money! Plus you have to think about that you have to buy the tracks, the motor, the RC and the battery extra! Then you surely have to buy 200 Euros - if not more - for one train which only has one passenger waggon! That's usury! If I'm right and it will become that expensive like mentioned above I surely won't buy this set - there even the design doesn't help! And if TLG does not release a passenger waggon seperately I won't buy it, too, independant how expensive this train is since it really would looks totally unrealistic to have a that large engine and then only one passenger waggon. So let's see and hope that we'll get a seperate aivalable passenger waggon and cheap tracks, motors, RCs and batteries! Klaus-Dieter Edited February 15, 2009 by Klaus-Dieter Quote
premko Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Fake. But it would be nice to see something like that in the stores... Quote
Klaus-Dieter Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Fake. But it would be nice to see something like that in the stores... Why are there still people who think that it is a fake after we more or less got confirmed that it is a real set?! Klaus-Dieter Quote
Freddie Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Googling the set gave me this:http://blogg.aftonbladet.se/27585/perma/1091006/ The comment at the bottom of the page dated January 30th (already?) seems to know that the price would be 1100 SEK (about 103 EUR), the release date April 1st. And these set numbers are also mentioned: - 8866 Motor - 8867 Flexible train tracks (???) - 8878 Rechargeable battery - 8879 "Fjärr", which I guess means "Remote"? Now, I don't know what to believe, but if the comment indeed has been posted that early, there might be something into this. Flexible tracks? Ouch, that's $200+ AUD. Where did you get this confirming information Mirandir? Does that answer your question? If not, linked blog got a reply from an insider, who confirmed the set, price and accessories before the image leaked, due to the insider himself being sceptical about the PF-train system. No one picked it up. Why, is anyone's guess. But, because of him knowing about this prior to the leak, I'd say the information is reliable. Quote

legotrainfan Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 I also hope Freddie is right! Thanks for that information! I don't care if LEGO releases no second waggon for this set. To get a second waggon, I'd just buy the necessary pieces et voilà I've got a second waggon. No problem at all. And I'd even pay 110 euro for it. My train addiction is too great to ignore this wonderful set! Quote
