It's probably speculation on my part, and I don't mean to drag this discussion off-topic ... but when I read "more," I couldn't help but thinking that March 27 & 28 could also be the time when the "new" PF tracks will be presented to the public. Now, when they say "more," could that mean that with the all-new PF system, we get features that were part of the amazing 12V series in the 1980s  , such as RC points, RC signals, RC level crossings ... wouldn't that be exciting? Or am I just dreaming?

Actually, I think that's entirely possible. Heck, look at all of the incredible surprises we've had already! TLG has proven that they really are listening to us, and they're making the stuff of our dreams. So, I would actually be surprised if the new train line doesn't have any remote-powered functions besides the trains themselves.

That's really a brilliant set.

The choice of dark green and tan for the colors is nice, and a good way to get more of the two. I also think that the design is lovely. It's very smooth but still retains the LEGO charm.

I do agree with Hinckley that some train doors would have been nice. These look a bit blocky for my taste, but when you use bricks that's usually what happens.

Another thing I'm happy about is the resonable price. $100 is a perfect price point for this set. Overall, an A+! :classic:

What an awesome set, even though I think $100 (USD) is expensive for a single train engine with one train car. I'm going to overlook the price; however, for the great set that it is. I'm loving the large train wheels and the design of the engine. It appears by the Lego SAH description, no motor is included.

As others above have mentioned, I'm really curious as to the power system. I hope that this new system is not battery powered; but if so, a rechargeable battery is what Lego designers have incorporated.

It's AUD 149.99! It would seem it's not motorised (or even convertable) as the on-line blub makes no mention of it... unless they are going to do an update later. :cry_happy:

Awesome, thanks for the price Sinner. I was expecting a AUD 200 + price tag to be associated with this set. But this actually looks buyable. And all this talk of RC points etc. are making Zuloo VERY happy. Although I'll never give up on 9V, there is no reason why RC crossings, signals and points couldn't be incorporated into a 9V layout. And if the signals were battery powered, you could put them anywhere on your layout.

Quite frankly, with all the news in this topic, I'm over the moon!!!

:sweet: But keep in mind, Captain Zuloo, that at this point, RC crossings, points and signals are nothing but wishful thinking. I don't want to be responsible for your getting your hopes up and then, in case there won't be any, there will be nothing but disappointment ...

I guess we will know more about the new train system after the unveiling events ... :classic:

Despite the absence of a motor or tracks, this is easily the most attractive train set to date. More important is the fact that it seems to be priced reasonably across most territories making it an absolute steal for train fans. In these tough economic times where people are tightening their purse strings it is nice to see LEGO put out an affordable train. I figure LEGO will probably sell the motor and track separately though I still wonder how fans will receive a new system. The 9V system seems to be the standard amongst AFOLs. Perhaps LEGO is trying to appeal to fans by allowing those fans who have been collecting 9V trains for years to convert their engines without having to purchase the new train system.

A fantastic set from the one company that I trust will continue to deliver the highest quality despite the recession.

I'm excited about this set! :sweet:

I see multiple purchases in my future...

Hopefully they will also eventually be available in the LEGO-branded stores http://stores.lego.com/en-US/default.aspx

using the Universal Currency Converter at http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert.cgi to compare prices

US $ 99.99

CA $ 129.99 = 103.424 USD (Canada)

UK £ 68.50 = 97.6624 USD (United Kingdom)

DE € 89.99 = 113.186 USD (Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain)

AUD 149.99 = 96.2976 USD (Australia)

CZK 2499.00 = 108.783 USD (Czech Republic)

DKK 899.00 = 152.027 USD (Denmark)

EUR 108.95 = 137.010 USD (Finland)

EUR 99.99 = 125.742 USD (France)

EUR 101.99 = 128.290 USD (Ireland)

NZD 199.99 = 102.268 USD (New Zealand)

PLN 349.95 = 92.1000 USD (Poland) Kup do swojego pociągu w Polsce!

SEK 1099.00 = 126.054 USD (Sweden)

CHF 149.00 = 126.944 USD (Switzerland)

For MOST countries the pricing disparity seems a bit better than it has in the past (10188 Death Star)

though the difference between Poland and Denmark is almost $60 USD

I'm amazed that for once something is cheaper in the UK, I hope things stay that way for a while. I agree with Hinckley that one car is a little weak maybe the new colours will be added to factor so we can build and buy far more?

....it looks as if there are rubber bands around the drive wheels. That said, there is no purpose for such an addition unless the locomotive was designed to run under its' own internal power.

The rubber bands will also allow for the piston action to work better if the train is pushed, less wheel spin.

Mmm yummy green train, must be all the cheese making me hungry.

There was a nice zoomable version on S@H where you can really get in and see the pieces.

This set is going to sit very wide on the rail, with a full width technics beam and then a thin beam out past that for the piston action.

The boiler would have been better with more pieces but that can always be fixed.

Great job TLC can't wait to see what they have next for Train.

Anyword if its just a SAH exclusive?

Nice info!

Just a little remark/question: is the distance between big wheel 1 and 3 (the two with rubber bands) not large enough for a motor?

The wheel in between should not be a problem, only a small (unpowered) hole is enough if required (or a construction around it).

At least it should be possible to rebuilt this train to a powered one...but I doubt that Lego will not provide us the tools to do that ;-)

Wow! I am quite impressed by this train. I am very curious about how this is going to work with the new engine and rail tracks :classic:

This looks fantastic, I'll be buying it for sure. Any word on whether it will work on standard track corners or do we have to wait for the new track geometries? Also, how wide exactly is the train? The majority seems to be 6 wide with 8-wide greebles but the drivers cab looks 7 wide to me. This will be a fantastic train to own.

From using facts about previous trains and other steam MOCs, I'm pretty sure this train will run on standard "L Gauge" track. There are 3 rotating wheel bodies on the loco, the front wheels, the driving wheels, and the back wheel. With all of these bogies being able to individually turn, this train should be able to negotiate the sharp standard "L Gauge" radius, and suprisingly, without much overhang.

I can't wait to get my hands on this little bugger - 15th of April on S@H Australia.

On S@H for Ireland it has an "Exclusive" tag on the item page, and also the set shows up in the exclusive category when browsing by theme (also shows up in Trains>Engines).

If it comes with an engine then awesome, if not then it's a little overpriced.

Plus it's kind of short, only one train car?

However it sounds like more will be shown at that train event. So hopefully another car will be sold separately.

My guess is that it doesn't come with a motor and that this will be sold separetely, inside another wagon (perhaps a caboose or a freight one). This set is SWEET!!!!!

As per my Ambassadorial duties (and because I'm really excited about this set):

-----------------------------------------------

February 18, 2009 – In acknowledgement of the many fan blogs and posts in the last week we are writing to confirm that The LEGO Company will be launching the #10194 Emerald Night Train in late March / early April via LEGO Shop at Home and LEGO Brand Retail.

Fantastic... I can't wait (but I have to) to have one of these or perhaps even two running around the layout!

I think that TLG themself doesn't know yet - otherwise they would have clearly written in the set description whether a motor is included or not.

Although this set is not that overpriced (about 110 Euros were mentioned) I feared before his set is not very cheap. So for 90 Euros imo a included motor would be justified! (Think about the last RC passenger train which now is sold for 110 Euros. It does include a motor, an RC, a little platform, tracks and of course the train itself. But when you detach the price for the tracks in the RC passenger train set it would be about 90 Euros. But for 90 Euros it would nevertheless include RC, motor, train and platfrom. Of course you can really not compare its design to the awesome design of 10194. But I'd say if TLG adds a motor (but no platform and no RC and no tracks) to the amazing Emerald Night train then the price performance ratio would imo be the same like in the RC passenger train set.) So let's see and hope that they'll include a motor!

I even think that from TLG's point of view it would be better to include a motor. Because: If there's a motor already included then people (me included) would of course even buy tracks, an RC and a rechargeable battery. If they don't include a motor there surely will even be some people (me included) which will either buy no motor, tracks, RC and rechargeable battery - or who at least will firstly wait what the future will bring.

Btw: Did you notice these two flat dark-green 4x1 bricks on top of the "oven" of the locomotive (in about the middle of it) - might it not be that the locomotive can be opened at that point into two "halfs" so you can put the PF motor inside? That's only an idea ...

I even ask myself if the white light in the middle of the locomotive's front can light if you put a PF light behind that big black round brick.

I think powereing that light might be a little ambitious. It would be to obvious. Possibly a PF motor in the boiler, or at least a space for one. With that in mind, there doesn't really appear to be any wheels that could be powered. But to tell the truth, I really don'tcare. I'll just be buying another 9V motor on eBay and putting it on the tender. And how will the back wheel stay on the tracks?
