Posted February 20, 200916 yr Dear fellow Eurobrickers, next to my Star wars addiction I'm working more and more on MOC's based upon sir Terry Pratchetts (knighted yesterday at Buckingham Palace btw) books of the Discworld. After a search on the forums I found a few topics but unfortunately a few promissing ones, like this one with the characters, has lost it links to the pictures. What remains is a great MOC of the Mended Drum. Now I would like to here from the Discworld fans; let's recreate the characters with original minifig parts, make more MOC's and see A'tuin reach his destination. Since I do not want to waist topics my included question is: Does it belong in History & Adventure? The Discworld society seems mid-eavel but may represent I seperate theme. I wont go so far as saying it disserves a theme by itself, well it does actually, but there simply isn't a big enough market for it I think. Your comments and suggestions are greatly appriciated.
February 20, 200916 yr I'm a big fan of his Discworld Fable - The Last Hero. I'm also very intrested in his other work but Discworld is just plain awesome. In regards to the theme it fits in, I would say a mix of Castle, Steampunk and Magicpunk. I wouldn't mind a look in on this project and wouldn't mind helping? -A.S.
February 20, 200916 yr I'd rather put Discworld MOCs (like any other MOCs based on non-licensed books, movies and videogames) to Other Themes, since it's not really a historical theme. But that is of course up to the moderators to decide, and there's really no harm done if a topic gets lost into a "wrong" section - the mods will just move it if they deem that necessary.
February 20, 200916 yr I'm not familiar with Discworld, so I'm not sure where it belongs. The Mended Drum creation posted by Adam looks like a castle creation, but creations relying more on steampunk belong in the Other Themes forum. If this topic is more meant as a discussion of the books, then it goes in Culture and Multimedia.
February 20, 200916 yr Discworld includes magicians, which is allowed in this forum. I think htat you should be fine. Other than that... I'm not sure what this post is meant to be about. I'm a fan of the books, but what are we meant to discuss in this topic?

I'm a fan of the books, but what are we meant to discuss in this topic? I was asking 2 questions; 1 are there people out there building MOCs based upon the Discworld novels? 2 is this the right forum to post in, for reasons stated in the first post? but that should finally be decided by the moderators, but feel free to add to the discussion. February 20, 200916 yr I think the Other Themes would be best suited. I love the Discworld Series I bought the Hogfather DVD and am hooked. I can't wait for the Colour of Magic to come out on DVD.
February 22, 200916 yr I had to Google it to find out about it. It sounds interesting. I am going to have to check it out. Look at that, go to look at LEGOs on the internet, and get hooked into reading.
February 22, 200916 yr Was he knighted? Fabulous news! Excellent. Discworld is an amazing series, I hope to see many MOCs from fans. No school for me this week, so I might (might!) be able to put something small together...
February 22, 200916 yr I will love to try and help. Is this a planned rebuild of any of the locals/characters therin or a no holds barred build of any place or person you wish?
February 23, 200916 yr Author I will love to try and help. Is this a planned rebuild of any of the locals/characters therin or a no holds barred build of any place or person you wish? It isn't a planned project or build, just my own thoughts on the Discworld. However I think it would be nice as Discworld fans to agree on surtain things so it will be easy recognicable to others what is depicted in Discworld themed MOC's. I'm putting up what I think may be the characters in minifigstyle as soon as my next bricklink order arrives from the US. But feel free to join in the fun and put the Discworld on the Eurobricks map. That is what it is all about. Build with LEGO and enjoy!
February 23, 200916 yr I could build some Last Hero MOCs and minifigs, if thats okay? Go, Terry, Go! Discworld Inferno!!!!
February 23, 200916 yr Ah Discworld, an example of the true genius of the human mind. I would say it is definitely medieval/early industrial, that is what it is mostly based around. It includes fantasy creatures and many elements normally associated with castle, so I'd say it belongs here. Glad to see there are a few fans hanging around the boards!
February 24, 200916 yr However I think it would be nice as Discworld fans to agree on surtain things so it will be easy recognicable to others what is depicted in Discworld themed MOC's. If I understand correctly, you'd like to set up a sort of database of characters (and perhaps even locations), so different people here can add to one online LEGO Discworld 'universe' which will then look somewhat consistent? That's a great idea. Might be a tad difficult to achieve, but I'm all for trying. On a related note: I've noticed you can buy red wizard hats on Bricklink. I've never seen a set or minifig with one, though. So... is the red wizard hat an official, rare part? Or what's it's story? (I'm asking 'cause it'll look good on Rincewind, but I'm not hooked on the notion of buying unofficial LEGO.)

It's most likely one of the pieces made to test the mold, those are usually done in red.

(I'm asking 'cause it'll look good on Rincewind, but I'm not hooked on the notion of buying unofficial LEGO.) red is a test color. whenever a new mold is created, it will be done in red as a color test. that's why you have red vader helmet, etc. it was never released as an official set, hence BL sellers are gouging them. as for rarity, it's not really that rare as you can see there are more than a few available from BL. but because of the gouging, it can be pricy. another test "color" is trans-clear.

Yes sir Mr Spielbrick, you got the idea Just to bring some consistency in the appearance of the characters. And then build like mad(wo)men to great nice MOC's I think i can post the first characters next weekend, if the mail service works as promissed.
February 25, 200916 yr Thanks to all those who explained where the red hat is from. Counts as official, then, eh! Good news indeed. L-space... are you going for yellow or fleshe figs? Or perhaps two options, so people can choose their preferred, uhm, "skintone"? I saw your Band with Rocks In MOC, they look good!
February 26, 200916 yr Author Thanks to all those who explained where the red hat is from. Counts as official, then, eh! Good news indeed. L-space... are you going for yellow or fleshe figs? Or perhaps two options, so people can choose their preferred, uhm, "skintone"? I saw your Band with Rocks In MOC, they look good! Oops, you got me there. I haven't really thought of that. I'm now only working with yellow heads. Mainly because that is my first response to lego and because I am basing the characters on my imagination and the covers by Josh Kirby. So my automatic reaction is: "yellow". With yellow you can create the cartoony feel some of Pratchetts characters described in the novels and you have more choice in facial expressions. On the other hand, yellost did an excellent sir Terry here in the flesh so to say. However, I do think fleshy is completely acceptable with movie characters, I do like them in Star Wars and Indiana Jones. And because we have mini-series and movies from the Discworld; Hogfather, The Colour of Magic, I think we can fleshy them as well. In conlusion: They both look acceptable to me, but I am going for good ol' yellow for now.
February 27, 200916 yr Finnaly some one who likes terry pratchets world held be elephants and turtles
February 27, 200916 yr This sounds like a great idea and could produce some very cool MOC's. Now I have something other to build other than bad Power Miners MOC's.
February 27, 200916 yr Author Can we go by the pictures in The Art of the Discworld? It's a very good book. Sure, go for it it's a great way to get inspired. And you made me buy the book this morning, thanks.
February 27, 200916 yr I'm glad to have pointed it out I will get to work as soon as I can make my mind up on what to try first...
February 28, 200916 yr I've already made a start on my Discworld - The Last Hero minifigs. Here's my list of figs to make: Cohen the Barbarian (and possibly his gang of aging heroes) The Librarian (Ook! ) Rincewind The minstrel (definatley my favourite character of this fable, but the hardest to make due to his elabourate costume, so I think i may have to chop up some capes and MMCB stuff) Leonard of Quirm Evil Harry Dread Captain Carrot And as for MOCs, I'll make The Kite and maybe a secret MOC, too... Just thought you'd like to know. -A.S.
