RileyC Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 Woah man! That's nuts, if only I was into Pirates Haha yeah same aye. Though I may pick it up just because its a huge mark down. That depends if there's one around cause The Warhouse's in Hamilton are damn useless when it comes to lego.
AoNZ Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 Damn I ran down and they were sold out. Apparently there was a big sweep in the morning so no chance for me. I didn't even find out about this until now so oh well. Does anyone have any idea why so low? Has this set been around for a while or wasn't popular or something? Anyway I'd be keen to hear if anyone managed to get one.
Legoman Posted November 3, 2010 Author Posted November 3, 2010 Well by the sounds of it Toye managed to get 5... Lucky guy Good stuff. When I went down, and the looked sold out, I went and asked customer service, and they said I was the 3rd person to ask in the last 5 minutes
Dragonator Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 Oh dammit, what a bargain! The stores in Wellington are shut now, they'll be all sold out anyway I should say... I would have loved a couple more of that set, ah well.

I would have loved a couple more of that set, ah well. Yep - Me and the boss contacted all of the Warehouses in the Wellington region, and they were all gone. We found out around midday, and got told by pretty much every store that they were gone by 9am. Im not that into Pirates myself, but $30 is a bargain! - kinda like the $4 city Minifigure packs a month ago (wink wink Dragonator....) I notice on TM that there are a few on there now. But all for more than $100. Hmmmmmmmm.
Dragonator Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 Im not that into Pirates myself, but $30 is a bargain! - kinda like the $4 city Minifigure packs a month ago (wink wink Dragonator....) Good times. I just found out the same information (from the same source, hehe ), all sold out in Wellington. There are some rumours of false-advertising, as it is clear there weren't 1500 sets on the shelves today, I would say a large number were sold in advance to staff etc. There were 13 at the Porirua store, and only 1 in Johnsonville. Not cool if you ask me.

When I went down, and the looked sold out, I went and asked customer service, and they said I was the 3rd person to ask in the last 5 minutes Yeah I managed to get 5 but it was mostly due to sheer luck. Westcity warehouse had 20 in the morning, at 10am but when I came in they told me they had none. I had a look around anyway and because I was unfamiliar with the warehouse I missed the lego section. I was tracking back and on the bottom of a shelf I noticed 4 stray Brickbeard sets - I instantly piled them into my trolley with a grin on my face I reserved 3 in another warehouse but in the end they only put one behind the counter (which I picked up) Personally I wanted to pick up about 10 but considering how fast they flew out of the shops I am not too disappointed with 5. Not cool if you ask me. I would tend to agree with this. I saw two brickbeard sets in the back of the westcity warehouse which I think were reserved for staff. The person behind the counter blatantly lied to me, telling me that there were none left in the store. But all for more than $100. Hmmmmmmmm. There was/is a few sets in the $60 and $70 range - several were snapped up pretty quick. I'd suggest if you want one of these buy them off TM now while there is still a glut in the market. These will go for over $150 new within 6 months because they are an end of the line product - not just this model but the pirate theme too - and everybody knows lego just gains value through time :) Here is several cheap sets on TM: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Toys-models/Lego-building-toys/Lego/Sets/auction-329235228.htm http://www.trademe.co.nz/Toys-models/Lego-building-toys/Lego/Sets/auction-329251289.htm http://www.trademe.co.nz/Toys-models/Lego-building-toys/Lego/Sets/auction-329377804.htm Also those 4 minifigure city sets were $5 today too - I grabbed one for myself. Not cool if you ask me. Who can blame them - it is clearly a loss leader. How much do you think they are loosing on each sold ? TW had these for $85 a few months ago, I'd say that is close to cost. For example: 1500x $30 would mean that they spent $45,000 to bring some potential customers into the store. But from a marketing standpoint they did not get the best bang for the buck - it was not even front page special! Or maybe was this for a tax write-off ? I think these would have moved pretty fast for $50-$60. I've been observing Jville Warehouse stock (b/c of an unrelated quest), there were at least 8 Pirate Ship's marked at $100 Monday night. I wanted to grab one to keep. But I can do without it, I already bought the shark off TM separately. Long time lurker, but this deal got me real excited. :)
David Thomsen Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 (edited) It's impossible to fathom the way a big business thinks. Where I work, we got this email one day telling us to mark down a bunch of $100+ books to $2 each. An hour later, an urgent message goes around saying "What the HELL were we thinking - STOP!" No one ever found out what they were thinking. Has anyone seen the Castle advent calendar anywhere? I've seen the City one, but not the Castle one. Edited November 4, 2010 by David Thomsen

Depends on what you offer though, as the fleshie heads never go a miss when I still have a hundred odd yellow faced SW figs that need converting
ColdBricks Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 We only got the brochure for that advertised the brickbeard set late on wednesday - 2 days late! My son, saw it in there and went crazy, "$30, I can buy that!" He had saved his pocket money, so I raced off down to the Warehouse in Barrington only to be told they'd sold out in about 30mins. So I had one very very upset 6 year old. Funny thing is I was in there on Monday and saw that they had maybe 10 sets, I just new they were going to be doing something crazy. I tend to think that most of them were bought by staff. There was certainly a "nudge nudge wink wink" vibe among them when I was asking about it.
CommanderFox Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Welcome to EB nk4002r! Ive seen and wanted quite afew of your TM listings I tend to think that most of them were bought by staff. There was certainly a "nudge nudge wink wink" vibe among them when I was asking about it. What a waste on those staff, bet they didn't even like lego... Oh well, I hope they do something like this again, I really hope the HP sets don't sell well, then maybe, just maybe warehouse would do another PoP like sale, and I could get lots of them!! CF
epic_red Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Agreed CF! The HP are really overpriced, but then isn't all Lego (especially Licensed Themes) ? I really want the new Hogwarts Express!

Dragonator Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 With the US dollar as it is now, it's definitely cheaper to order most sets, especially licensed ones, from the US. For example, I found a Clone Turbo Tank on the Barnes & Noble website which retails over there at $120USD, which works out at just over $150NZD. Almost 50% off. You have to factor in a bit of shipping, but on the whole it is worth it for several sets.

I had a look on ebay for the large sets like the emporium but the shipping was like $50 USD
Dragonator Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Do you have a good site to get them from? I had a look on ebay for the large sets like the emporium but the shipping was like $50 USD I've recently bought a couple of sets from Barnes & Noble, a US book store chain which also sells some Lego, who have some decent prices and a fairly good selection. Certainly not everything, but SW and HP sets are particularly good value. Here's a link to all the Lego they have. Shipping is not cheap but it is reasonable and still worth it for the cheap sets.
Legoman Posted November 5, 2010 Author Posted November 5, 2010 (edited) Do you have a good site to get them from? I had a look on ebay for the large sets like the emporium but the shipping was like $50 USD Yes, it is usually expensive to get something half way around the world Usually, the more you buy, the smaller percentage postage will be of the purchase. I'm still keen to get a few 10212 UCS IMP shuttles from the US once they come down in price, so we can share postage. I might actully go check that out now EDIT: Alrighty guys. I Can get 2 10212's in for $950, So if anybody wants one for $500, First in first served That's $100 off RRP (Although, its not in NZ yet, so it's early too ) If anybody wants one, Flick me a PM and We'll get something sorted Edited November 5, 2010 by Legoman
jp-30 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Bummed to have missed the Pirate Ship, I had been eyeing it uo to make a ship from the Monkey Island games. Have bought a few of the small-mid PoP sets for Indy Jones customs in the last week. Saw a new 3-in-1 Hoth pack at Farmers (Henderson) yesterday - Wampa set, Tauntaun set & Rebel Minifig pack in a large box for $130. It was 20% off yesterday too, but no budget to buy it unfortunately. Maybe next sale.
RileyC Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 Bummed to have missed the Pirate Ship, I had been eyeing it uo to make a ship from the Monkey Island games. That would be so awesome!!
