October 28, 200519 yr Hmm... I thought all of those mermaid examples were a bit too bricky. I picture something "softer", like using a green minifig cape as the tail then brainstorming the rest. Something... simple. ::doesn't have parts, so can't moc it::
October 28, 200519 yr Author Governor ::doesn't have parts, so can't moc it:: Oh darn, I was going to ask you to provide an example! Looks like you'll have to scour BrickLink right away. :-D But I do agree that they look a bit "blocky", still this is what thread is all about -MOC Mermaids!
October 28, 200519 yr Now now, having the mindset that "moc" has to mean "bricky" is what gets people slaps in the face. :D
October 28, 200519 yr And who adminsters these slaps? http://brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=102063
October 28, 200519 yr Author Governor Yes, that thing does look very slappy indeed with all those tentacles...
October 31, 200519 yr I always thought a cool idea for a Pirate set would be something to do with a shipwrecked Pirate or something who hallucinates a mermaid. And, a good looking one, not a fishy one like in Harry Potter.
October 31, 200519 yr Author Governor A good looking mermaid? Errrrr... What does a good looking mermaid look like?
November 1, 200519 yr This one by a cleverly humorous japanese guy on Brickshelf made me laugh: http://brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=149092
November 1, 200519 yr I always thought a cool idea for a Pirate set would be something to do with a shipwrecked Pirate or something who hallucinates a mermaid. And, a good looking one, not a fishy one like in Harry Potter. first, i don't have mermaids, nor do i expect to buy one in future, unless the set is ridiculously cheap, but: 1) i would use a mermaid in a pirate set only as a statue on the bow of a ship, like that pirate of the first pirate ship, ... but a lot better... i'm not sure how i would do that, but i might use these things: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?P=554 and put them between the torso and the tail, if that's possible... i would also change the head... 2) i've been trying to read the weird discussion on how a mermaid would stand up, or how the lego version stands up... Bare in mind, a mermaid doesn't stand up like we do (they live in the sea, remember?). but if they were to come to land, they would crawl on the ground, and use the tail to move forward. they would not stand up and be supported by the tail... so if the lego minifig can't stand up it's only because it's a perfect replica of the real thing! :P
November 1, 200519 yr I don't think a mermaid would stand on the straight tail just like in the Harry Potter set, however I can imagine her sitting on it on the bottom of the sea or even on the shore.
November 3, 200519 yr Author Governor 2) i've been trying to read the weird discussion on how a mermaid would stand up, or how the lego version stands up... You mean like an albino fur seal?
July 8, 200618 yr This was the first minifig moc I thought of when I saw the merpoeple set. I've had made the minifig moc a while ago, but made the shell vig for this post. I'll most likely use her for a ship figurehead.
July 8, 200618 yr Author Governor If its of a piratical nature then by all means create a new thread for it and we'll discuss it!
July 8, 200618 yr If its of a piratical nature then by all means create a new thread for it and we'll discuss it! Most of my mocs are are of a nautical nature, but not nessesaraly pirate, imperial or islanders. I'm curious where we should draw the line here? for exp. the chinese junks (the chinese certainly had pirates but I don't consider these part of the pirate theme. Or the sea life such as my version of the kraken... operlaping into vikings but can be used in a pirate moc. And ships like cogs or Biremes...should they be posted as threads within 'LEGO History & Adventure' or 'Your Own Creations'? Concerning the mermaid I'll post a thread as soon as I have some more pics, likley tomarrow.
July 8, 200618 yr Author Governor Technically Vikings didn't have Krakens,.. From Wikipedia... The name Kraken never appears in the Norse sagas. However, there are corresponding sea monsters, such as two creatures called hafgufa and lyngbakr described in
July 8, 200618 yr ghoulrealm, your version of the mermaid is really cool! But I don't like the kraken so much because it seems a robot or a spacial ship with that colors
July 8, 200618 yr But I don't like the kraken so much because it seems a robot or a spacial ship with that colors yes it does, that's probably becuase the top of the head is taken strait out of this set I like the mermaid.
July 9, 200618 yr yeah, that mermaid is pretty cool. Is that out of a particular set? If you read Ghoulrealm's first sentence, "This was the first minifig moc I thought of when saw the merpoeple set." it tells you that this was using peices from "the merpeople set" whitch refers to the HP "Rescue from the Merpeople" set, but yet this is still his MOC becuase he modified the mermaid with slave leah parts from the SW Jabba's Palace set.

Ah, well that makes more sense now. Thanks for pointing that out 007. And I now also see how vastly improved the mermaid is from the one in the set.
July 21, 200717 yr Some time ago I bought a few old-style minifigs. While experimenting with them, I suddenly remembered this thread. So now, over 1,5 years after we started discussing the Lego mermaid issue, I finally have some custom mermaids for you! *sweet* :) :-P I think it's an interesting alternative to that specialised mermaid-tail brick. The left mermaid has a custom torso I found and downloaded from Brickshelf once. Unfortunately I can't find it now, so I can't tell you who the author is, but I'll try to find it again when I have some more time.
July 21, 200717 yr Very nice solution Dreamweb, it looks good. But they also now stand on their tailes (but if they were underwater it wouldn't be strange)
