Minifig Lecturer Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 (edited) Anyone know where I can get some African (Brown coloured) LEGO heads / hands / trousers? Any sources of note for good quality ones. Has there been many different face styles in this colour does anyone know. I know some were used in NBA sets but not sure if in other sets..? Thanks for any ideas in advance!!! AwesomeStar Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 I would try the tribesmen in the Temple of the Crystal Skull set. Sure, there's only two, but maybe buy multiples off of Bricklink. Hope that helps. -A.S.
Eilif Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 (edited) Unfortunately, outside the NBA sets (quite a few varieties there) there aren't many options. Mace, Lando, and a couple of others, and that's pretty much it. For the most part they aren't particularly cheap, but they are available. Your best bet is to go to bricklink and then to the catalog section. Select the "color" tab and then select your color. you will get a list of all pieces in that color, enter the word "head" and you will get the selection of heads in that color. When you click on a specific piece, you will be able to see if and where it is being sold. The colors to check are brown, redish brown, and dark flesh. I'm also on the hunt for heads to represent african minifigs. I have several of these heads: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?P=3626bpx276 I'd be willing to trade a couple with you if you have any other brown heads to trade. Professor Kilroy torsos, are also a good not-too-expensive source for brown hands. Best of luck. Edited March 3, 2009 by Eilif

I guess I will check out Bricklink although I have only used BL once and the set I bought never came.. That head in particular is good. If I get others in future and swapping is good for us both I will contact you. Cheers!
Basiliscus Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Hi mate, as you know I have amassed a large number of African heads for Zulu army which will be available fo public consumption later this year. For those who don't know, I have around 160 African heads for my Zulu army and British auxilliaries. The choices you have are as follows: NBA Heads (a couple of examples) Pros - wide variety of styles, generally widely available, is more like a true African or African-American Cons - most have a stupid smile Standard Head (in reddish brown, unlike photo) Pros - wide range of uses, can be easly combined with other accessories (e.g. beards, hairpieces etc), gender neutral, age neutral Cons - silly smirk, only one variety Lando Pros - doesn't have stupid expression Cons - rare, expensive Old Style Mace Windu Pros - fairly non-specific expression, fairly gender neutral, age neutral Cons - VERY rare, expensive, difficult to acquire many of these New Style Mace Windu Pros - more detailed face Cons - looks weird next to normal minifigs, very haggard looking Dark Flesh with Goatee Pros - my favourite African head, fits in with older style minifigs well, doesn't have stupid expression Cons - strange colour (dark flesh) Dark Flesh with Sunglasses Pros - modern style African head Cons - silly expression, can't be used in historical MOCs, strange colour (dark flesh) I have all of the above with the exception of the old style Mace Windu and the Dark Flesh with Sunglasses. It's an expensive and time-consuming thing to buy in quantity. In my own opinion, the only answer is Bricklink. Even on Bricklink I purchased all the NBA heads from different sellers (e.g. 6 from one seller, 3 from another etc) and so the shipping costs add up. If you are thinking of trying Bricklink again I can tell you which sellers I have used so you don't get stung again. Hope this helps. If I've missed any, let me know.
Minifig Lecturer Posted March 3, 2009 Author Posted March 3, 2009 NBA Heads (a couple of examples) Cons - most have a stupid smile Yea! they sure do. Thanks man, thats good advice. As it happens my fave is the goatee one too however I am looking for some heads that can represent freaks like Didier Drogba, Patrice Loko etc so some of these more ugly ones should do Yes please give me a good Bricklink seller sometime! Thanks!
Basiliscus Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 I will email you some good sellers I have used. I should warn you that everything on Bricklink is in $, so be wary of the exchange rates. In addition, buying from sellers in America will probably result in you receiving custom charges . So it's not cheap, but you've got very little choice to be honest!

The Green Brick Giant Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 I have a ton of the NBA guys because they were so cheap. They are great for a lot of different faces, however they have stupid arms and the hands don't come out.
Minifig Lecturer Posted March 4, 2009 Author Posted March 4, 2009 Basiliscus gave me some seller links The Green Brick Giant, did you buy them years and years ago? Any on sale still somewhere?
The Green Brick Giant Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 (edited) It was many years ago, probably 3-4. It was at TRU and they had the three minifigures for $1 and it was BOGO I think because no one wanted any. I would try a used store, like in the USA a Good Will, they might still have some because no one wanted them. :) Buy a "ton" I have 12-5 of them. lol I made a great Teal'c from Stargate with one. :D Edited March 4, 2009 by The Green Brick Giant
Basiliscus Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Oh, and a word of caution: The Green Brick Giant is correct in that the NBA torsos have arms and hands that do not separate (I don't own any but I've heard this). So make sure you buy the brown hands and arms separately. Good luck and let me know how you get on!

That's not the only problem, because of the stupid way the arms are supposed to be used to shoot the ball the NBA arms/hands don't even connect correctly into a normal torso. So in short the NBA guys are a huge mess, only get the heads. :)
eti Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Old Style Mace Windu Pros - fairly non-specific expression, fairly gender neutral, age neutral Cons - VERY rare, expensive, difficult to acquire many of these Okay, then I know something you don't know! At 1000Steine.de there are still 1378 of them available for 1 euro each. So actually it's fairly easy to acquire many of these for a low price! Look here... I ordered four of them just so that I can blend in some dark people - I got most of the other heads you mentioned, too. I'm missing the dark flesh one with glasses.
The Green Brick Giant Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 And remember that the NBA players are the old brown. I actually liek the old brown more. There are several different shades of brown for LEGO people and in the real world, so a nice mix makes it seem more real. Of course "more real" in a universe of yellow guys, and .009% woman is subjective.
kill will Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Strange, I only have three brown heads and one is the sunglasses guy which no one else seems to have.
