I am really impressed with this old classic look. The Pirate line from 1989 was a completely new direction from TLG and they created tons of new bricks (and minifg heads) and they also went far in designing amazing boxes (this one is from 1992 I think)

The feature of being able to open up the front "flap" is such a great idea.

UPDATE:

In post #10 are the pictures of each alternative model idea from the back of the box

Great box art, very clean and simple, yet it show the greatness of the set. I like that older sets showed what the set was really like, unlike the recent ones with explosions and stuff added with photoshop or something, which destract from the actual set.

That actually was around for quite a while, it was already featured in the 375 - yellow castle I think, back in 1978, maybe even in sets before that.

You are absolutely right, Fluyt!

I still love the old sets equally then the new ones!

Thanks for posting the boxart. I have this set, but I acquired it second-hand sans box. I like that alternate model in the largest pane in the box. Perhaps I'll attempt to make it sometime. The alternate models were the best part of the old boxes, especially when they suggest models that were very different than the original.

I think I'll post some pictures to these larger classic boxes with close-ups of the alternative models - that way people can try to rebuild the sets even without having the boxes at their disposal

Man - I really hope someone will post box art of the Eldorado Fortress, Black Seas Barracuda, and Skull's Eye Schooner... all the classic sets would be great to have "Box Art threads" of

The old pirate boxes are the best boxes ever in my opinion, what I really love are the small, drawn, map-like images of the set itself. Absolutely sweet! Todays boxes lack so much of this sweetness. While more mature, the Indy boxes are not too bad, the black Star Wars boxes were nice, but City, Castle and Pirates are too boring these days...

thanks a lot for the pics!

One of the all time great Lego sets... and yes the box addded greatly to the experience. I don't generally keep the packaging, but I have this one :pir-wink:

God Bless,

I just came across this when looking for box images whilst getting out my own box "artifacts." Interesting to see here in the USA we had a legend to accompany the set on the inside flap.

Anywho, happy International Talk Like A Pirate Day to all!

Thanks for sharing BrickKnight! I think TLG should have these back-stories and box art return in their new pirate line. :pir-wub:

Fantastic pictures, everyone! This is one of my first ever Pirate sets, and the biggest Pirate set I owned back when I was a kid. It has nostalgic value for me, but it's also a pretty great build for its' size. It has everything it needs to be a fun experience both to build and play with, lots of stuff going on and great figures. If only all sets were like this.
