Phew, no congregation of bad guys with machine guns! ... At least for now.

But I think we now found out how the Red Dragon goes in and out of the manor. I'd like to test if any of the keys we have go with the locked door.

Ahead is a small flat space, with another set of stairs on the right spiralling up again, and a short corridor to the left with a wooden door at the end.

We aren't allowed outside, apparently, so let's just continue up the next stairs.

Ladies with capes first!

Wait a minute. Is there absolutely nothing else to be found on this floor?

I'd like to check the floor and the walls just to ensure there are no hidden comparments or dropped keys lying around.

Miss Sandy does a thorough check of the area, but does not find anything of interest. The "room" appears to simply be a small place where the corridor splits.

The detectives, led by Miss Sandy and Peter, continue up the stairs. They go up quite a way, and soon the floor starts to get dustier. You note that there is a distinct set of prints in the dust.

Eventually you get to the top of the stairs and enter a long room filled with boxes, crates, pieces of furniture etc, all stacked up in storage. At the end of the room is a wooden door. The room somehow seems familiar.

It seems we have reached the other side of the attic door, meaning we have come full circle. Feel free to look around, and then you may go back and look anywhere you like. If you think you can answer my questions, then by all means have a go, some of you have already. Good luck...

I'd like to follow the prints to wherever they specifically go in the room, then carefully examine what is there.

Incorrectly, it would seem.

Is this really all there is to the whole manor? :sceptic:

Sure, we found the secret vault, but it was emptied as well. Oh well...

Okay, I'm pretty sure I now know the murder weapon and where the murder took place, but there are still quite many suspects and as for the motive, it could be anything...

Anyway, I'd like to check the boxes to see if there's anything interesting there.

Peter follows the prints. They lead straight through the room to the door at the far end, without turning aside.

Miss Sandy meanwhile decides to take a look at the boxes. While bending over one, a sword propped against the wall falls over, narrowly missing your foot. You do not find anything you think relevant amongst the boxes, although there are plenty of interesting antiques, all covered in dust.

Careful Miss Sandy, that was very close! :look:

Oh, clumsy me! That sure was close...

I think it's time we get to the bottom of who is the murderer. There's plenty of reason to believe it was one of us, so how about a little test?

I want to go get the tan hat in the cellar and try it on each person's head to see who it fits. Can I do that?

Oh, and a question: do these footprints lead towards the other side of the attic, or towards the way we came in? That was left a bit unclear...

I wonder if that lever I pulled in the other side of the attic would open any of the locked doors we've come across. I'd like to wear a cape too and have we checked where that secret corridor leads that I opened up?

*smacks Max in the head*

Focus, mister! The lever in the attic opened the door to the stairway in the kitchen, and the secret door that you opened lead to the empty vault. I'm pretty sure we've been through every niche of this damned house already.

Only one bathroom??

And only one bedroom? It would seem that in a manor that there would be guest chambers, a library, and multiple other random rooms...

And a conservatory, a parlour, a bunch of hallways, a billiards room and a closet.

I'm not at all sure this house is fitting for inclusion in the trust, nor do I understand why we're being allowed to run around it when a bunch of dragonfreaks with a secret own it.

I think this is really an elaborate trick and we're all being filmed by one of those ridiculous "reality" shows. :hmpf_bad:

People please, remember that not all manor houses are massive monstrosities, many were not much bigger than an average house. Bathrooms were not often inside houses back in the day, we they used latrines outside. I'd also say this manor wasn't really built to house many guests, more just as a solitary retreat for a busy man.

But enough complaining about this manor not being big enough for you (as if we haven't been here long enough already :hmpf: ).

Miss Sandy goes to collect the hat and tries it on everyone's heads. The hat fits quite a few heads, so you are unable to determine its ownership by that means.

The footprints head up the stairs and towards the door at the end of the room.

Perhaps the esteemed members of the Red Dragon brought you all here for a different reason... Who said that? :look:

Lt. Spencer Soldiery Pants already said it was his. Double duh. :hmpf: :hmpf:

So now what... maybe we could go back to the kitchen and look for Col. Mustard and make a sandwich?

I thought he already had his hat on. Oh well, maybe he keeps a spare...

I'd like to take the sword we found and try if it really fits the empty place above the fireplace in the parlour. Just to be sure...

Damn, I know I'm missing some vital piece of information. So close, yet so far...

Posted

Miss Sandy walks off to find the sword and take it up to he parlour. Having nothing better to do, the rest of the group follows her. As they walk through the cellar you pick up the sword, and then head for the parlour. There you find that the sword matches the other one on display around the fireplace, and that it fits in the empty bracket.

Okay, so all my theories are now confirmed. Can the solution to this mystery really be this obvious?

*turns to look at Mr. Dragonator*

Did you solve it? Am I such a slacker? :cry_sad:

Solving the Case

At that moment, as everyone was wondering what to do next, Miss Sandy stepped forward, and theatrically pointed a finger at Lieutenant Spencer.

You sir, are our murderer! I have seen enough evidence here to believe it. You gentlemen just don't have it in you to solve mysteries, it takes girl power to do this. Now, here are my answers to the four questions...

WHO: Lieutenant John Spencer, aka. the Guardian. He is the keeper of the secret of the Dragon's Retreat, as proven by the hat in the cellar and the fact that he isn't involved in the case in any other way. All the rest of the detectives are mentioned either by name or indirectly in the clues.

WHERE: The dining room. This is where I think I was right at first, but went wrong in my second guess. Chester met with Mr. Dunne in the parlour to go through the papers, but after that he went to have dinner by himself. The cake that was for desert was still waiting in the service lift, for he never got around to eat it.

Now, the Guardian, Lt. Spencer, came through the secret passageway into the parlour, saw the documents, and knowing Chester was eating in the next room, grabbed the murder weapon and committed the murder.

WITH WHAT: The sword from above the fireplace in the parlour. This is proven by the large puncture wound, the bloody rag that was used to wipe it clean, and the shoddy way it was hid.

WHY: Simply because Chester had gone too far in his enthusiasm to renovate the manor and open it to the public, against the Guardian's instructions.

I'm eager to find out just who is Lt. Spencer's employer, the real owner of Dragon's Retreat. That's the one mystery that I think is still to be uncovered.

As Miss Sandy came to a close, Dragonator stepped forward, clapping slowly.

Well done Miss Susan Greenwood, well done indeed. It seems you have managed very well to uncover the murderer despite the false trail he tried to leave. Although you are not quite correct in all the details, and your motive is a little off, I think that you are most definitely our winning detective, as you have uncovered the answers to all the questions, using logic and thinking outside the square. But I'm sure you all want to hear what really happened, so let's walk down to the vault and there I will answer all your questions...

End of Chapter

A big congratulations to Sandy for being the first person to solve the mystery. I will have a conclusion up shortly (although without pictures, since Brickshelf is down...)
