They are very real. As an instrument they are known as Zeusaphones, and smaller versions of these are commercially available.

has an interview with one of the designers that built and operates the coil shown in the first video, and its explained that the music we hear is basically modulated thunder. There's also lots and lots of other videos of other people building and playing music through their own tesla coils/zeusaphones.
