sologuy369 Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 It actually says NEW 2010. I can't wait to see what it is. Exactly my point! Quote
Emperor Claudius Rome Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 That would be aswome if they continue it. The I wouldn't have to spend lot of money on buying spongebob sets of off eBay. Quote
Big Cam Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 This seems like a poor business decision fro LEGO. Quote
Emperor Claudius Rome Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 The series is probably going to end in 2011. TLC better squeeze out what they can still get. Quote
The Green Brick Giant Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 I always thought it was a rather limited theme. I can see LEGO rereleasing all the same things again just to cash in. Quote
The Who Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 This could potentially be good for Lego, but I really doubt it. With all the other new themes and sets for existing themes coming out, I just have a feeling Spongebob, of all things, would not be drawing the attention of too many customers. Hopefully, if it is true by some chance, then we won't get a ton of remakes again. Quote

Hopefully, if it is true by some chance, then we won't get a ton of remakes again. Sponge bob doesn't even sell too well and usually have low ratings even on the Lego S/H website. They may be stopping spongebob but they may not as they usually release 2-3 sets every year. The krusty krab i heard was a bad remake as its a even smaller set than before. Its the same for good neighbors at bikini bottom. Quote
CMP Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 Hi people. I was watching TV, and I saw this commercial. I am not sure if this was posted before, but I saw it and thought it was pretty funny. Here's the youtube clip; couldn't find any better quality videos. Quote
Oky Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 And it lives on??????????here? Should be a banner in the link. But I thought it was over, too ...... I have a hard time trusting that website. It has a Pop banner made using custom figs. Besides, doesn't this contradict the fact that Lego exchanged the Nick license for the Disney license with MB? @ Pie: Yes, that video has been posted. It was even on the frontpage. Quote
Svelte Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 I entirely agree with Oky on this one. I don't trust this website at all. We'll wait and see what happens, but I personally wouldn't expect new Spongebob in 2010. Quote
Grimmy Posted November 29, 2009 Posted November 29, 2009 From reading on here and other sites as well as listening to the LAML Radio podcast, it seems a lot of people dislike the Spongebob sets. The first regular size Lego set I bought for my niece was the Karbby Patty. I was suprised that she didn't jump for joy at it! We love the Spongebob cartoons. But as the reviews say on the official Lego site, the buildings aren't build so well. They are very fragile! I personally love the minifigs though. The show isn't normally education but me and my niece are into aquarium fish. We learned that the creator of Spongebob was a marine biologist and me and my niece notice all the salt water sea creatures names and terminology that some average viewers might miss. She is only 6 years old and knows what an Anemone is and how to pronounce it, and how clown fish like Nemo can live in them and take care of them. So we do get something out of it then just pure entertainment. The set with Sandy's Rocket sold out yesterday and now on both Ebay and Amazon.com they are going for at least double the original price. I don't know if the people who dislike the Spongebob sets dislike them because they don't like a Lego Spongebob line or if they do but just don't like the builds? Quote

The line had much potential but the designers blew most of the set designs. For example, Patrick and Squidward's homes in 3827 Adventures in Bikini Bottom were oddly proportioned when compared to SpongeBob's pineapple. The 2009 redesign of the Krusty Krab was so much worse than the 2006 version! I mean, there's only one stud length of interior! The 2006 version was on a baseplate and it included essential things to the Krusty Krab like the boat. Don't get me wrong - there were some good sets too - but most of the sets are too small and empty since they are just half or a quarter of the actual building in the TV show. EDIT: Anyways, there are many sets that could still be made! For example: Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy's senior center room Sandy's dome the Flying Dutchman's ship the beach (forgot the name ) Mr. Krab's house SpongeBob's grandma's house Edited November 29, 2009 by ILikePi Quote
phillip10 Posted November 29, 2009 Posted November 29, 2009 I think most likely spongebob is done. I think lego had good potential but they blew it. I'm not saying all the sets are bad, but most of them stink. I think they shouldve quit long ago Quote
lightningtiger Posted November 29, 2009 Posted November 29, 2009 If there was to be any sets next year we would have heard by now. Since Dora The Explorer was with Lego once and now sits on toy store shelves marked MB, good old squarepants could go the same way. I truely hope not, I only have one MB set and it's construction was a pain and parts not locking together right - Lego totally rocks and is far better then MB in my opinion. Quote
Grimmy Posted November 29, 2009 Posted November 29, 2009 I checked the new version of the Krabby Patty and I must agree, the newer one is really skimpy. I can't believe it has no plate space after the front. We have the old one which is decent but it's still very fragile. (a common complaint of Spongebob set reviews) I've even thought about glueing the thing so I did a search and found a bunch of people, parents asking what to use to glue them. (Usually a no no for most Lego builders I learned.) Quote

The Flying Dutchman too, but it would be the year's highlight cuz of all those characters and pieces and the rivaling potential with the Pirates line. OOH and the Mermaid man theme would be cool too, maybe even a headquarters set sold seperately. Quote
VBBN Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 Most of the spongebob fans are of a younger audience, so if they did keep it going, I say downscale(or upscale? not really sure... X] ) to Duplo. To keep a liscense costs money, and if spongebob doesn't sell well enough, it's the end of the line for it, just like speed racer. Quote

If they ever do up and/or downscale it, they'd better have awesome figures. i remember Duplo had this cool shark with a block trigger to move its mouth but that was back in 2005, and i only discovered it recently Quote
MrCustomizer Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 I am rather impartial as to whether they drop the line. I like Spongebob and they've done a great job at designing sets off of them, but there aren't many uses for the pieces otherwise. I do think that it's more likely that the line is ending though. ~MC Quote
AFOL SF Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 I was at a Lego store last weekend and was informed by one of the sales rep that indeed, the Spongebob line is being discontinued. The store isn't getting much Spongebob sets these days, she said and once their warehouse inventory is exhausted, that's it for this theme. Quote

And I think the decision was made as early as last year. Before the last sets came out. Pretty much it's because of poor sales. Which I got confirmed by a store owner I talked to the other day. I got the impression that they wouldn't have taken in any more Spongebob even if the line had continued. Quote
Grimmy Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Me and my 6yrs old niece built this set last weekend. I believe this set got better review ratings then the other sets. I wonder if it was a different person who built it. I love the grumpy fish driver minifig. His head is hilarious! It would be fun and great to get a bunch of these heads and make a grumpy scene with SpongeBob fooling around in the front. I love the SpongeBob chars. I bought a bunch of the minifig packs during the black Friday Lego store sale. At the time I didn't know that they are made in China and less quality until I read people say it on the board. I have a whole bunch too including Star Wars, Pirates, and Indiana Jones for stocking stuffers. Can someone tell me if they are really that bad of quality? Quote

Can someone tell me if they are really that bad of quality? The quality of the plastic for the minifigs isn't extremely horrible, but still pretty bad when compared to normal minifigs. Usually the minifig head and torso print have a dull finish to them, the capes are thinner, and the joints are a bit stiff. However, the flaws of the plastic aren't only just what I listed. My silver stormtrooper magnet set has a very loose hip-torso connection (the hip and legs assembly separates from the torso very easily), loose helmet, and there is a dull shine to the minifig head. I also have a Count Dooku from a magnet set with a torso print that is very low on his torso (the flesh print is about 1/16 of an inch below the top of the torso, but it's very noticable). EDIT: One more thing - my Mace Windu (from the same magnet set as Count Dooku) has a neck pole that is a bit large for the head, so the head is very hard to turn/pull off and has stress marks on the lower section. I got the magnet set containing Squidward and Gary for my sister, and I didn't see any quality issues with the figures. I also haven't had any real problems with the more recent Star Wars magnet sets, such as the one with the AT-ST driver or the one with Dooku -- the plastic doesn't feel quite as nice if you compare them to real minifigs, but they look fine. Some of the older ones feel cheap and look lousy, in particular the Royal Guard set. Quote
