I see. I couldnt participate because it was Shabbat (sabbath) and you arent allowed to turn off lights and all those things. Actually, most religious Jews cant participate. I think they should have made it after the Sabbath goes out with this week.

good enough reason. BTW, its virtually impossible to do this on a day with no religious events because there always are events going on

It seems silly to me. Do you know that turning lights off for an hour and then putting them back on in most cases uses more power than running them the whole time? Thus Earth hour is more wasting energy than saving it. Also, everyone turning stuff back on at the same time risks causing a real blackout! As Cartman would say, "It's all a bunch of tree hugging hippy crap." I'm for real solutions, not symbolic ones.

Well Shabbat isnt really a once in a while event, it is every week on Saturday. I agree with Sinner except for the South Park part because I just have a passionate hatred for that show. Dont ask why or I will send you a thousand word PM, no joke. I'm warning you!

No because it's only "nonessential lighting" that's turned off. People need to stop looking for symbols and actually do something. I, for example, do my best to not leave computers on when I'm not using them.

If people aren't aware of the need to use less energy then they either don't care/believe or they must have been living under a rock. The message is out there already.

Those are good principals. I assume you didnt get them from watching South Park! :laugh: (builds bad principals) There needs to be a serious change in electrical products IMO. Even if they are more expensive to produce, there still is a aspect that is only for the best.

I wasn't actually home during Earth Hour, but at an Adam Hills show. However for the duration of the show all the lights in the theatre were off except for 1 spotlight. Then he made an old guy take off his shirt and sing happy birthday to another bloke who looked like santa... Good ol' Adam Hills!

One thing they could do would be to take out those rediculous blinking status lights that use up so much unnecessary power. Turning it off isn't enough, we have to unplug it, too. :hmpf:

Anyway, I've never heard about this. Maybe I ought to try it. Still, there are better, and longer lasting ways too help- like recycling.

I, for one, applaud this movement. Anything that gets the unwashed masses to shut things down for an hour means more electricity for my world domination plans, and that's always good for everyone. Especially me.

Put me in the "this is nothing but feel good crap" column with Sinner. It's sort of like donating endless millions to diseases we aren't a day closer to curing after 50 years or forced recycling programs with extra pickup schedules that only end up creating huge piles of supposedly recyclable materials that no one has any interest in paying to recycle. Nothing says wasted effort like a pile of sorted garbage that is still taking exactly as much space as before and serving no purpose. :hmpf:

Fun facts: If all the residents in Norway were to shut off their lights for one hour, they would save about as much CO2-emissions as the oil and gas industry of Norway would put out in 44 seconds.

The average Norwegian is responsible for putting out 12 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere per year. The oil and gas industry uses 26 seconds to do the same.

In other words, this is a stupid symbolic act that pulls the attention away from the things that really matter. I'm sure lots of people have a clean conscience after shutting off their lights for one hour, the problem is that it didn't help a bit.

:tongue: I don't get my facts from Mythbusters, besides you're over simplifying and exaggerating their results. Also, it's a lot more complicated than they make out; for one, they ignore that fluorescent lights have power factor issues and due to that you can't accurately measure power consumption with just a current loop. They are only measuring real power which for fluorescent lights can be 1/3 of the apparent power and thus the results could be way off. (Someone who's studied AC power more recently than 7 years ago please feel free to correct me... :blush: )

I bet they were using a modern Fluorescent to get those results... but I'll concede that it may not be as bad as it was in my youth. When I was a boy a fluoro took 10 seconds just to start.
