Masked Builder Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 That thing is huge! I've seen the Hasbro one and it's large but the fact that this is the same size is amazing! You've done very very well. Your model puts Hasbro's to shame. Agreed! Quote
XimenaPaulina Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 Simply the BEST AT-AT I've ever seen. Congratulations on this masterful creation jamie75! Your model puts Hasbro's to shame. Not even close. Should not be even mentioned in the same conversation. Quote
cavegod Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 very nice you've done well young padawan, you've now gained the skills to build a UCS AT-AT lol Seriously though it's great how does the neck hold up? what does it weigh? is it posable? Quote
Brickdoctor Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 Not even close. Should not be even mentioned in the same conversation. It's Hasbro vs. LEGO, what do you expect? Seriously though it's great how does the neck hold up? what does it weigh? is it posable? Same thing I'm wondering. Only two Technic axles? From what I've heard of UCS AT-ATs, it should need some complex engineering and a ton of Technic pins and beams. Quote

From what I've heard of UCS AT-ATs, it should need some complex engineering and a ton of Technic pins and beams. Been built about a week now and no problems yet!! And, trust me, I was WAY OVER THINKING the connection for the head. I had a ton of pins, liftarms, and bricks in there. Nothing I was trying seemed to work. Then, using the axels, hit me, and it work!! Simple, yet, effective!! Plan B for the axels would have been using 4, but, 2 worked. As for weight Cavegod, your welcome to come over and weight it, but, I don't personally have a scale. Jamie Quote

Jamie So it's just two Technic axles, right? How long? (I'm assuming 32) I would have thought that the weight would either bend the axles and snap them, cause them to slide out of the body, or both. Walter Kovacs Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 This looks really impressive, Jamie75. I was also surprised that only two axles are able to hold the weight of the head. Though it does look like the head is SNOTed plates covered in tiles, and not brick-built. That should make it a bit lighter. I think I remember when you first came out with the instructions. They were all done on MLCad, right? And uploaded to Brickshelf? Or am I thinking of someone elses work. I think I downloaded them all, and found that it was incomplete at the time. Quote
prateek Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 I just saw this on the EBSWblog, and I've got to say, this is the biggest AT-AT I've seen! Kudos on adding an interior. One thing though, is it me, or is the neck too long? Quote
Fallenangel Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 Not even close. Should not be even mentioned in the same conversation. It's Hasbro vs. LEGO, what do you expect? Erm... Anyway, the sheer size of this model is incredible, and I love the attention you've put into hull detailing and structure as well as scale. (By the way, it's pretty close to minifigure scale, judging by the size of the parts connecting the legs to the drive motor.)It's clear from what I can see of this that you've put a considerable amount of blood, sweat, and tears into it. (The interior looks nice as well.) There are just two things about this that I feel you could improve - one small, and one... not so small. First, the guns. It can be observed from this picture of the studio model that the side-mounted medium blasters should be shorter than the chin-mounted laser cannons; it's clearly the other way around on your model. I would suggest increasing the length of the chin-mounted cannons and perhaps shortening the medium blasters just a bit. There's also the issue of the width of the legs - from what I can see, it appears that your AT-AT is wider across the legs than it is across the hull, something that seemed strange (because it's clear from the film that the legs were tucked well under the hull - also, see this. From this, it looks like the hull on your model is too thin - there should be more space around the neck. Perhaps this can be allotted to the fact that the angle for the hull didn't exist in LEGO? I don't think the neck is too long - it probably just looks that way because it's straight. Quote
jamie75 Posted January 8, 2011 Author Posted January 8, 2011 Here is a pic of the neck connection. 2 #8 Technic Axels, 3 Bricks with 2 Holes, and some bushings. Slide the neck on and that holds everything together. Slide the head on the Axels and 2 more bushings, done! Walter, that was/ is me! All files should be there. The only thing is, I had some changes to model when I built in real bricks. Parteek, thanks, but, I think when looking at the looks fine. Angel, thanks for pointing out the guns, not sure what I was thinking. And yes, the legs should be tuck under the body, but, 4 of these, http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=30562, makes the drive motors 8 wide, the hips, have to be 2 wide for the weight. Add some Technic hinges and the legs. I played with the body but, making it wider didn't look right. All in all, I am happy with it! It may not be perfect. I may revive it later, but, for now, she is staying as is! Full gallery is modded now on Brickshelf, also! Thanks, Jamie Quote
Brickdoctor Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 Oh, okay, so the axles only provide an attachment point and are not the only thing inside the neck. That makes more sense. Quote

Add some Technic hinges and the legs. I played with the body but, making it wider didn't look right. I think that the issue here is that the parts connecting the legs to the drive motor are too thick. It's evident from this pictures that they are quite thin on the actual vehicle. Perhaps you could try building them SNOT? You may also want to consider dilating the hull by about a stud around. (That is, the edge of the hull would be one stud farther away from the neck than it would be now.) Quote
