Darth Legolas Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Have you ever gone overboard to save up for a set? I recently had this idea from a recent conversation recently. I was recently talking to someone when I realized that I really am going crazy for this AT-OT and Dropship set. I've recently been MOCing more than usual to keep myself occupied while I await the great AT-OT and Dropship. I am also getting really bad at counting... but that could be a side effect. So recently I've been wondering, am I weird? Is it just me, or have we all had a set that we'd go to Hell and back for? Quote
Derek Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 I've never been to extremes like, well, starving myself , but I have cut back on impulse spending on Lego and other things if I am planning on buying a larger in the near future. Quote
Millacol88 Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 I think I know what conversation your talking about. It really was quite recent wasn't it? In response to your question: No, not recently. I remember back when I got back into lego in 2007 (pretty recent really), I was overwhelmed by the amount of sets there were and found myself feverishly picking them up and saving for the next one. Recently, however, with the new CW line and my relative lack of interest, I haven't been spending as much. Recent, Recent, Recent. Quote
Peppermint_M Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 It depends. If i think i have spent too much all together i go a month with no credit card purchases, I always pay it off right away, but if i pass the £150 mark in a "normal" month (no special exceptions have occured) otherwise I don't stop buying other things. I just bought a costume, next few weeks I will be getting a load of lego and going to a comic con, so june shall be a no credit card month if i go to far. It is a pattern designed to keep me out of trouble. Quote
VBBN Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Is it just me, or have we all had a set that we'd go to Hell and back for? Or a girl... Yeah, I wanted the MF and Taj Mahal for parts, but I couldn't bring myself to pay for them. Better things to spend money on. ;) Quote
ILikePi Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 (edited) Yeah, there's been a set in which I couldn't stop thinking of it. The Hoth Rebel Base, for one example. When it was re-released, I wanted it so badly, but then it was discontinued before I could get it for Christmas, so I got really sad for a day or so. That didn't last long, since even though I wanted it, I thought it was a rip-off. Also, it didn't include a Tauntaun, which I wanted. Anyways, I don't care about the set any more, since there's going to be a Echo Base set! The same went for the ISD when it was on sale for $60 on Black Friday. I woke up late, then found out that Target had already sold out. Well, now, if I want a set that badly, I can just not buy some sets for a while, then get it. I'm planning on spending around $300 or so this year, much more than last year (around $70). Edited April 27, 2009 by ILikePi Quote
user Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I am at the moment! I always do the same thing every year immediately after a new theme comes out I have to buy every single set in the first wave such as agents and power miners If Oky wan Kenobi is reading this then he knows what I'm talking about! So of coarse when I saw SP3 I was like "OMG I have to buy every set!" so I did some calculations and after my birth day and after selling that enormous tub of Lego on ebay I will finally have enough and some money to buy all of the SP3 sets and some indy sets! Though i'll probably regret it someday I am not planning on changing my min d any time soon! Quote

Yes, I can confirm that: computerbug is a fanboy! As for me, I never actually save up for a set. I just see to it that I have enough money to spend on my hobby at all times, so when a set goes on sale, I'm good for it. And I usually don't buy sets for the MSRP, so I never spend all that much at a time anyway. Quote
daxflame680 Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Have I ever gone overboard with saving up for a set? Right now, I'm limiting my LEGO purchases to $40 a week to save up for a 10188 Death Star. And once I've tried to get all sets over $55 for gifts ,or on sale.(It didn't work very well ) Quote
Darth_Legois Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I havn't starved myself before. And not to save on LEGO but sometimes I just dont buy food at malls to save money for LEGO so I just eat something at home. Also I think the most I've ever spent in a month on LEGO was $300 AUD, That was a great month Also my LEGO Budget per year is about $500 AUD I think...although its probable increasing [so that month I spent $300 I spent over half of my budget!] Quote
daxflame680 Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Also my LEGO Budget per year is about $500 AUD I think Oops, I feel like a jerk now Quote
SiRoa Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 it was 7029.. but I got it now.. it feels very good when you got that set.. so I'm not starving for any set now.. Quote
Oken Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Yesterday I starved myself because I've spend too much this 2 last months. I have missed so much Lego sets during 20 years... :D But now I'll reduce my purchases, not because I'm not interested in the new set, but because a big lack of space! Quote
Raven Brickroft Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 I don't starve myself, but I do rethink my expenses. Instead of buying fastfood, i go somewhere more affordable. Besides, those that sell the affordable food are so much better than fastfood. Quote

The whole point of fast food is that its cheap. Quote

No there was this one time where I saved forever to get the AT-AP at my local store and then I found they put it 20$ higher that the retail price and I couldnt afford it. Quote
JimBee Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 I've been saving for my trip to the Lego store in Shaumberg (spelling?), Illinois. After two months of saving, I'm finally done, and I can now purchase the Medieval Market Village and Count Dooku's Solar Sailer for much cheaper than a local store or S@H. I've become quite the penny-pincher just to get this set. Not to the extreme, though. Quote
Darth_Legois Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Oops, I feel like a jerk now Because my budget is 1/4 the size of yours? I'm trying to save up for the overpriced Solar Sailor right now.... Quote

Been there, tried that, and failed... I ended up spending another £60 or so the other day despite my resolutions. Quote
Peppermint_M Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Don't go there! I manage to be good for ages (to a given value of good) and not buy things. Then I get a £30 Zoid, a £20 anime figure set and an armful of Graphic Novels... Then I buy lego on top, merely because it is in the shop or I have hit a mental creativity block and want to build something... Quote
sinoxp Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Don't know if this is overboard, but everything becomes a conversion to me when I'm set on collecting minifigures. For example, on my craze to collect Stormtroopers (each $2.50-$3.00), if I was hungry and there was a sandwich for 6 bucks, I'd think that if I save on that, wait another 45 minutes and eat at home, thats 2 more stormies recruited to my army. That is kind of the case for anything I'm crazy about, including gifts for my girlfriend. Yikes! Nuts huh? Quote
Darth Legolas Posted May 1, 2009 Author Posted May 1, 2009 (edited) Well one time I walked into this restaurant and I saw this big fat guy, get this-EATING A SALAD!- and I thought "on a diet, poor, or AFOL who wants a 1019- set?" I guess I need some psychiatric help then... Edited May 1, 2009 by Darth Legolas Quote
