Yes, that's exactly what I am saying. Someone doesn't buy a Mercedes if they aren't well off (or they shouldn't), because as you said one should know when to spend one's hard earned money or when to restrain when that money isn't there. With my parents emigrating to the United States over 30 years ago, I know all about hard work; even with my dad working 3 jobs all of his life he still doesn't drive around in a $80k car. Maybe it's a difference in culture, but I've been taught all my life to be frugal, at times out of necessity.

What's the point of having nice things if it means you are burdened with a monthly payment you can barely afford? If you can manage to fully pay a car off with cash on the spot, then yes I'd say you are pretty well off. Maybe when I'm a professional in the workforce earning considerably more than I am right now I'll finally commit to investing $60k in an automobile, but for now my opinion stands (as wrong and relative as it may be).

Did that help to clear up some of the confusion?

I can agree with everything you said.

I think the confusion lied in that i thought you meant anyone with a relatively "nice" car such as a Mercedes means there living beyond there means and is a waste of money. But after your explanation that doesn't seem to be the way you think. Thanks for clearing that up.

I've changed in May for a 2009 Opel Corsa D-type, after my old 1993 Opel Astra F had a rusted out engine, after a whopping 16 years of almost daily use, which is quite a lot for an early 90s Opel.

img_3981.jpg

As you can see at the oil under the Car, it had a damaged engine, due to the long running time, 16 years is quite a lot for this type of Car, it was called the worst Opel ever made, still made it until it's 17th year.

Now I've got that one. But sadly crashed it in June at downtown munich, but it's all fixed since July again and no more crashes had. It even passed the Ski test, altough being a class smaller than the old car.

This was shot yesterday at about 1070m asl. in over a half metre of snow, which is a lot given the season.

Hmm, its like your old Opel has tried some steroids for a couple of weeks. And now it all muscled up and ready to show its new body! Even has that scary look in its eyes!

Its very nice looking car!

Nice! Why didn't I find this topic sooner :)

I like driving cars and following the news, but won't bother you with that. These are the cars we are driving:

@Widdi: Really? I didn't know that Astra's from the 90's where that bad... Ours is still going strong, very little rust in the wheel arches and technically it's in a good condition. (although we are thinking of buying something else next year, and that will be a convertible again... )

Very nice cars.

Is it just me, or Dodge would look better with bigger wheels?

 Almost any car will look better with a little bit bigger wheel. Car companies are always so conservative.

Of course!

But this Dodge simply screams for bigger wheels...

I completely agree. In the US we have the Dodge Caliber which is actually very close in size to that thing and it uses the same wheels and could definetaly benefit from larger wheels.

Here when you want to buy a car, if you chose the model with basic "equipment"(no AC, no ABS, no CD...) you will regularly receive the smallest wheels, often wheels which are in size very funny and not suitable for the vehicle .

They are piratically forcing you to buy better equipped (1200eu+) vehicle of the same model.

Wow, without sounding smug, it seems we have it better in the US. Even the base model of most cars come with things like AC and ABS.

Hahaha....

Let me tell you what we had to pay to have in our new car:

Pay to have servo steering

Pay to have CD

Pay to have head rests on seats

Pay to have ABS

Pay to have bigger wheels

Pay to have electric windows

Pay to have back seats safe belts

Pay to have bunch of little thing that are not for pretty look, but essential for safety on road!

But hey, car salesmen have to live from something, don't they?

Wow! that really gave a lot to talk about! :classic:

Let me clear some things about 'my' Dodge. First of all, it is al very complete car, everything is in the car; 3-zone climate control, cruise control, parking camera and a navigation system with harddisk and DVD player. The only thing I had to pay extra for was the navigation system, the rest is standard on the SXT-version.

About the wheels, yes, I agree those could be a bit bigger. These are 16". When I was choosing the options, I asked the salesperson if bigger wheels where an option. He told me that these wheels are specially for the engine in my car; the 2.4 petrol. When you order the Journey with a diesel-engine, you will get 17" wheels and when you order the top version (for europe that is) you get a 2.7 liter 6-cilinder petrol engine with 19" wheels. But that version is 8.000 euro more expensive then what I have now and that was a bit over the top I thought.

Still, the USA is a better place to buy cars. My company paid 36.000 euro for this car. I went on the internet, to do some comparing with prices of the Journey in the States. Turned out that for that kind of money I could order a Journey with 4 wheel drive (not an option in the Netherlands) with the 3.8 V6 (not an option) and about every option package left in the brochure. :cry_sad: Those darn taxes here!

Anyway, it is a very comfortable car. I'm driving it since august '08 and it brought me to France (3 times) and to Sweden, summer and winter and it drives great! it's quiet, spacious (going on a winter vacation with two small kids needs a LOT of space, trust me) and drives very easy. The only downside is fuel consumption, 1l. every 8 km driving in town, 1l. every 11 km when driving on the freeway...

Oh and Big Cam, you can order a Caliber here also, trust me, this one's considerably bigger... from the outside and the inside...

Here in Canada you can order both Caliber and Journey too. I'm not sure if they have Journey in USA

I know for sure that it's available in the US, as I've written in my previous post, you can get a lot more interesting versions of the Journey over there...

It all depends on the law...

Finally, 10th of December bunch of new traffic regulations are to be ready for the parliament.

So most of those things are going to be illegal to not have.

In general...yes, the Avenger could REALLY use some bigger wheels, the Dakota could also stand to go up a few inches.

The Ram, Caravan and the Charger all have great wheels, or leat have decent wheels.

Heres a picture of the Avenger...

Don't those wheels look small?

I cant believe I misssed all that conversation about Dodge  Where was I?

Well... In Canada, the Journey is the top selling Crossover

I absolutely hate crossovers like the CX-7 and the Dodge Journey. Quite frankly, I think they're just a load of crap, and if you own one you must be slightly insane. GET A REAL 4WD, or get a car. If you want a 4WD that looks like a car, then get a Subaru. A proper 4WD is the Toyota Landcruiser 70s series.

I'd like to get one too. Maybe a ute or troop carrier.

Sorry just venting my anger on these wastes of metal.

Oh, do any of you in a country other than Australia know what a Holden is, or is it a Vauxhall?

A Blast from the Past!

Loook at it, because its the ultimate off-roader, or in my eyes anyway.

I assumed as much, it is designed very similarily to the Caliber.

I understand about not opting for all the extra's, especially when they lump them together and charge you so much.
