Hi guys, I haven't created an account anywhere for uploading pics yet. Before jumping in, I wondered if there was general consensus here for best photo hosting site.

Which site do you use, and why? (Maybe this would be a good question to make a poll for, oh wise and esteemed site admins?)

Thanks!

I use both Flickr and Brickshelf for my Lego pictures. There are benefits of all of them, and I like the combination.

I actually made a poll exactly like this a few months ago. It can be found here  .

Wow - how'd I miss that? I did a search and everything!

Thanks for the link - sorry to duplicate!

Well, since it's here, I'll go ahead and throw in my thoughts,

These are what I use:

Brickshelf: Slow, but it's free with unlimited upload space. Although it does crash sometimes.

Flickr: The best site to use, but it's not as good if you don't have a pro account. I have one, and it's one of the best 25$ I have ever spent.

My own site: Not to fond of this one, but it works.

Flickr is just brilliant. Even without a pro account but you'll get hooked and go pro anyway. Not just for Lego stuff, by the way, it's great for all photos.

MOCpages is the best Lego specific sites because of the possibility to comment, make contacts, etcetera.

Brickshelf I don't care about. No way to add text, contact people... and a lot of things that aren't really MOCs. I only go to Brickshelf when somebody on Lowlug or Eurobricks etc. posts a link to a Brickshelf picture or folder.

And the fact that things become public only after moderation is also a big reason for me not to use it. When I finish something I want to show it NOW and not tomorrow....

Flickr is indeed brilliant. Your pictures get published just the way you've uploaded them; without any loss of quality. You can upload 200 pictures when you aren't a paying member. I think I will upgrade very soon.

Brickshelf is an easy choice for me. I'll quote myself from another thread on this recently:

Flickr is like a typical image hosting site, where you either pay them or you put up with various restrictions on the size and quantity of images. I don't like their interface either; the default sizes of both pictures and thumbnails are too small. Brickshelf's lack of limits is rare these days and the main reason I like it.

Brickshelf. It has the most LEGO centric content, a decent search function, free and unlimited space, and is easy to use if you take a few minutes to get the basics down. Plus it is "the" place to find some of the best and brightest LEGO creations going back years and years.

There are pros and cons to all of them. I still use brickshelf, am an enthusiastic user of flickr and used to be on MOCpages until recently.

The interface on brickshelf is a bit clunky and old-fashioned, indeed, and there is no facility to exchange comments or questions, but it's still used by a lot of people and is LEGO-only and free. The biggest drawback that I see is that its continued existence seems a bit doubtful. The plug was almost pulled two years ago and I am unaware of anything that could prevent it from happening now.

Flickr is brilliant. I did go for the pro-account and haven't regretted it for a minute. There are very few limitations, it is intercative, with the option to add comments and notes, there are very active groups dedicated to LEGO (such as LUGnuts and the Flickr Lego Military group), many excellent builders are active on it and you can customise it such that you really only get to see the stuff you like. That means that even though it is a general photo-sharing website, if you don't want to see non-LEGO pictures, you really don't have to. If somebody pisses you off, you can block them and you'll never have to see them again. The only drawbacks that I see is that it's not very friendly for people who don't have an account and their free accounts are a bit too limited for my tastes. I ran into one of them in the first week of having an account and decided to upgrade there and then.

MOCPages is LEGO only, which is a plus I suppose. It too is interactive and is free. It's also been overhauled considerably and the various new features such as groups and the option to choose favourite builders means that if you set it up right, you don't have too look at the loads of rubbish that are uploaded every day. That's one of its biggest problems. It's full of children and obnoxious teenagers. It isn't particularly friendly to use for people who don't have an account, because they have few means to separate the good from the bad. Although there are some very good builders on it, they're a small minority and most of them are on flickr too. It's also a breeding ground for plagiarism. Put your pictures on there and you'll see copies by people pretending that the pictures are theirs appearing all over the place. Since it doesn't offer anything that I can't get on flickr, I decided to leave about two months ago.

Cheers,

Ralph

It's trivial to do that on your own. I downsize my pictures in a particular way that I think produces better looking results than what most programs do by default.

I would say Flickr. It downloads the fastest for me, and sign up is quite easy. You just need a Yahoo account. You get 100MB for free space, and if you're like me and use it like me and download mostly decals, then that is plenty of space per month.

Flickr, for me, at least.

There's a great community there, plus you can see pics in all sizes, blog them, comment on them, add notes to them...the list goes on and on.

I think it is important to take into account that what might be convenient for you may not always be convenient for the people you might want to see your pictures. That's the reason why I'm still on brickshelf, because I know that flickr is awkward to use for people who don't have an account, which means they aren't as likely to see my pictures. If you only put your pictures on MOCpages, the majority of people who'll get to see them are kids and teenagers. Of course, I was once a kid and a teenager, but that doesn't mean I'm necessarily interested in their opinion

Ralph

I've just begun experimenting with google's picasaweb.google.com and it seems to be a great interface, especially with picasa. Plus you get an e-mail with the great gmail

I use primarily Flickr (second PhotoBucket), as I like the layout and the nice coummunity features like comments, favoriting, ect. Also the direct upload is good. And for the ones that hate the limited photostream... be smart and create your own personal pool and you have no limited picture upload anymore... isn't that a good tip... :classic:

MocPages is also good for me because of the community features, although I use PhotoBucket I find that the layout s*cks... but it's freeeeeee !!!!
