Here's my first ship, still a work in progress. I plan to have it finished sometimes this summer. PLEASE voice any opinions, suggestions, or tips you may have so I can improve and finish this.

I plan on having 10 guns, 4 on the sides and 2 facing out the back. It will have a full redcoat crew to run it and when it's done I'll have many images for it, and yes, on a better camera with a white background.

I think this looks great so far! Some closer shots would be nice. Looks quite sturdy, and solid. Props to you.

Thank you very much! I'll have better pictures of it when I get the pictures on my mom's computer, the laptop you see is new so I haven't configured any cameras to it but I should have more shots of it next time I work on it, which will be as soon as I can order parts to continue it's construction.

This ship looks great so far. I like the colours, but I should also place gunports in black before the holes to break the pale red colour.

I'm curious about how the stern is going to look like.

Unfortunately I see this ship sails for the Redcoats so we Bluecoats are forced to sink it when we meet at sea. :pir-tongue:

Keep it up!

Looks like a very fine ship. Ships with these sails are always very good and fast sailors. The only suggestion I can give is to put the 2 square sails a little bit lower, remove the mast-thing (black beam) on the bottom of the main-sail (there should only be one on top of it) And you could add a little mast on top of the crow's nest. I really like the hull and I'm eager to see what you will make of the captains cabin.

I'll be glad to meet you at sea, and thank you!

Hmm, I'll see if I can make something out of that. The captain's cabin is going to give me many many problems, I have NO idea how I want to go about designing it, how it should look, its size, or anything.. I need to make some orders to get parts to continue constructing the ship.

One of my drunken pirate minifigs has just pointed out an important feature: There are at least two barrels of beer(?) aboard! Already you're ahead of the game in the crew morale department!

The ship is very spacious on the deck. My ships are never so roomy, they're packed with masts and guns until there's barely room for the figs! There's something to be said for the cargo space you'll have.

I'm wondering about the 2 cannons in the back of the ship. Won't give that trouble to the room in the captain's cabin? I think it's better to remove them and give them a place on the broadsides. Or the captain has to eat his meal on the cannons as table. :pir-tongue:

AMEN Cap'n

It does look good, but I find that the color scheme is a little blahhh :pir-sceptic: But Good Job :kahuka::thumbup:

Hah if I find another barrel I'm putting it in lol, moral is the key to victory. Also, the ship will have a crew and things of that nature. I'll also be adding detail when the ship itself is finished.

That is something I've been trying to figure out. The cabin is still up in the air for how it'll be done and I might take them out, but then again you don't ever want to be attacked from behind because a few cannonballs could take out a mas quickly an leave you immobilized. I might take them out but that all depends on how the cabin turns out.

It was a disaster indeed if another ship fires the whole broadside through your stern. But even if you have cannons in there, they still shoot through the stern anyway.

Just make sure to sail correctly so your ship's stern isn't exposed to enemy fire. :pir-blush:

In fact there were no cannons sticking out of the back of the cabin, the cannons were a deck below.

Here you can see what I mean, the cannons at the back, on the red hull section. Above the gundeck is the great cabin.

I hope that might help, I have been struggling with this problem a long time. Untill I decided to make a large ship with several decks.

You could also put the stern chasers (cannons) on top of the poop deck instead of inside the cabin. But I'm not really sure if that's historically accurate. Then you could maybe better put them at the bow, or, like Cap'n Blackmoor said, at the broadside. Just try some things :pir-classic: good luck

Hmm.. there's a good idea. I'll take this one into heavy consideration. Thank you very much!

8 cannons ordered from ebay for $7,

That's a good price I think

how many crew members should be aboard?

As many as possible! :pir_laugh2: Well, I think for a ship like this, in real about 30-40, but since it is lego and there were always some people below the decks, I think 10-20 will do as well.

In my LEGO ships I am happy if there is 1 men per cannon.

So I would place 1-2 men per cannon, a captain, some officers and some soldiers.

You've done a good job buying the cannons for that price.

Good luck on the build!

That's what I was planning, thanks for the input!

CREW:

Class x 6 or 7. Your ship appears to be a class 7 (three hull middle sections) so that's 42 to 49.

MINIMUM CREW:

- 7 to manage the sails (equal to the ship's class)

- 2 per cannon

- 1 captain

Wow, good thing I'm collecting minifigs, slowly but surely the collection is growing.

In real the ship's classes ran from 1st rates to 6th rates. They were classified for battle to see which ship participates and which ship doesn't.

Of course there were smaller ships then 6th rates but they were only good for transporting and escorting missions since they were just too small to fight in battles.

The ship's class was based on it's ammount of guns, not the length of the ship. :pir-blush:

The reality of Lego Pirates, however, is that the vast majority of ships built are too small to even rate in anything but the lowest class under the old cannon-based class system. The class system from Evil Stevie's Pirate Game is much more applicable for our needs. Here's how it works:

Class 1 - Small brick-built hulls like the small ship in the 6277 Imperial Trading Post

Class 2 - Large brick-built hull or narrow (12-wide) with no center sections

Class 3 - Narrow hull with 1 center section or wide (16 stud) hull with no center sections

Class 4 - Narrow hull with 2 center sections or wide hull with 1 center section (Caribbean Clipper)

Class 5 - Narrow hull with 3 center sections

Class 6 - Wide hull with 2 center sections (Red Beard Runner, Brickbeard's Bounty)

Class 7 - Wide hull with 3 center sections (Black Seas Barracuda, Skull's Eye Schooner)

Class 8 - Wide hull with 4 center sections
