Thanks for the info, CopMike.

I'm just waiting for a store to open on the east side of the Hudson. There are almost 3 stores on the west side within 100 miles: West Nyack, Bridgewater, and King of Prussia (there used to be another store in Rockaway, NJ). And there's Paramus, opening this year. But there's nothing to service Long Island, Connecticut, and the city itself, which I think is a real shame. Paramus will be the closest to the city, but city and Long Island folk will have to pay the $8 premium to cross the Hudson.

Ah well. One can dream of a Lego store in Times Square to compete with the likes of the Toys R Us and M&M store.

Does anyone have a pic of the Flying Pig set? I live 15 minutes from Kenwood and I'm planning on going opening day. Also are thes give away sets rare?

Lucky for you guys that live close by there. I have one opening 10 minutes from my house, I really have no idea what they could do as a set for Birmingham, Alabama though (maybe the Vulcan).

Does anyone know when they announce the date for these openings? TLG seems pretty cryptic about these things; I have no idea when mine is opening, you'd think they'd at least have a "Coming October 2009" or something on the webpage.

No, they're not really rare. I can't speak for all of the grand openings, but it doesn't seem like there are any special pieces or whatnot in these sets, and no minifigs IIRC. The sets are nice to have, but if you're into sets with minifigs like me, they're not terribly interesting.

Do a search for "lego store" on google, and click like the second or third link. It gets you to the official page of the Lego Store, which has updates on the next openings. The list CopMike has at the bottom of the first post is of the stores that are opening later, which is also on the official Lego Store page. If you live near any of the ones on the list, then just keep checking the page for updates every week or two. Otherwise, maybe the actual storefront will have a sign indicating the approximate month of when it'll open. But I've never seen that with Lego Stores, only other stores in certain malls.

Remember, if you get to one of these opening and pick anything up (the promo set or a grand opening brick or something), get an extra and PM me and we'll work out a deal.

Thanks!

A contest for folks to create a small set based on a geographical area might be a neat idea...

Big Apple for NY, Jersey Devil for NJ, etc. Sorry to all you world-widers out there, but other than Nessie, I wouldn't know what to suggest.

Looks nice, although none of them are closer to me than existing stores. Maybe I could stop at the Baltimore store at some point, as I cross through that area when I visit my parents (or go to Brickfair).

I am about 25 minutes from the Riverchase Galleria Birmingham Store as well. Vulcan would be a cool set but I doubt they'll put that much effort into it. I'll be there at the store opening to get one, whatever it is!

What the heck is that one for the Mall of America?! Looks like a wall... Love the cactus!

The Mall of America one is just six 2 x 4 bricks that you are supposed to put on a large flag. However, it looks like there was a special thing about some bags. The picture of the bag says, "If you find a gold brick, you will win a free set of you choice, a green brick - 20% off any set, a grey brick - 10% off."

I am a bit ashamed to admit this, but I have never been to an official Lego store. I am planning on going to the opening of the new Cincinnati store on the 19th. I have heard that some stores have sections where you can create your own figure out of various parts. Is this standard on all stores? And if so, what is the figure part selection like? For example, could I find recent Star Wars head-pieces among the selection?

I believe that every LEGO store has a build a minifig, but I'm not positive. I've been to the Mall of America store and the Munich Germany store, and the Munich one had a much better selection. The Mall of America had only those stupid basketball legs for legs, but I did find a Princess Leia Slave torso.

In Minnesota I got these:

Build you own minifig is very weird, they have the most random parts. For example they had that indian head, and an old brown Kepi. I really wonder where they get those old pieces...

Build your own minifig? Really? I don't recall in my many visits to the Lego store in Colorado ever seeing that. I guess we lucked out. Or maybe I missed it or something...>>
