We've changed "LEGO Space & Mecha" to "LEGO Sci-Fi". So what does this mean? Well most importantly, it doesn't mean that anything will be removed from the forum; everything that used to be in the "LEGO Space & Mecha" will fit in just fine in "LEGO Sci-Fi". But now we'll have a home for many of the genres that we're shoved in "Other Themes" such as SteamPunk... but I'm getting ahead of myself. To me the old forum title was too limiting and confusing; Space and Mecha? Where does a hovering tank belong? It's not space, nor is it Mecha. Same story for stuff like Mars bases. While the old title covered the available themes well, it didn't cover the genre well. Due to that I regularly received questions about where, for example, futuristic cities should go.

"So what is Sci-Fi", I hear you ask. Good question, but a good answer is harder. Firstly, Sci-Fi is not the future, nor is it space. I can be... but for example putting a romance story in a futuristic setting does not necessarily make it Sci-Fi. Wikipedia has a good rant about what others think, but since this is my rant I'll tell you that I see Sci-Fi as being about exploring the possibilities of science and technology. So what belongs in here? This isn't a rigid list, but for starters;

All LEGO space themes, including Space Police

Mecha (Exo-force or not)

Steampunk (Past, Present and Future)

Post Apocalyptic

Zombie

MOCs (and some sets) based around real spacecraft

Any movie, game or TV show that isn't an official license but is generally promoted as Sci-Fi

The last one important one. I personally don't see a lot of TV "Sci-Fi" (or SyFy ) as real Sci-Fi... but many do. In the spirit of free thinking and not impressing my opinions on others, all things that are generally seen as Sci-Fi (such as Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Doctor Who, Babylon 5) are welcome here. But there always well be some genres and MOCs that could be classed as both. For example...

scr_02.jpg

This is based on Cafe Corner... but really seems more Sci-Fi.

This is a futuristic building... also based on Cafe Corner. Is it Sci-Fi? Arguably not, but since it includes Space themed minfigs it probably is.

mcf-blade01.jpg

How about this? Aside from the people on the roof having life-defining moments, it looks non Sci-Fi to me...

mcf-c01.jpg

...oh it transforms! That seems more Sci-Fi now!

It's a similar story with Zombie MOCs; but I think in most cases they'll fit in best here. (I haven't seen many fantasy zombie MOCs actually...) Remember that this name change is about including more into this forum, not excluding.

So now you know what the "Sci-Fi" forum is about, what isn't it about?

Underwater LEGO themes

Underground LEGO themes

Agents / Alpha Team

Launch Command

Horror

We have other plans there. Please share any thoughts or questions here... and enjoy the "new" forum!

that's a good thing but I have to ask something !

Are steampunk and post-apoc "sci-fi" themes, or does they belong to the "other" Category ?

btw, great moc based on the cafe corner! ^^

Did you read the original post at all, or just look at the pretty pictures? :hmpf:

I read it but missed the list somehow ... maybe because of the wiki link that made me forgot to go further in the post, maybe I thought I finished to read it when I came back from reading the wikipedia page! sorry ^^

I don't get how zombie is Science Fiction but I guess Post-Apoc could hold zombies and therefor are a perfect match in here. I really like you've included Post-Apoc in the Sci-Fi theme!

I think Power Miners should be here as well!

As I said, we have other plans there.

We needed a home for Post-Apoc as it's a genre that keeps coming back and it's common in Sci-Fi stories. As for Zombies ( :sing: ), they are often blended with Post-Apoc. However, zombies ( :sing: ) that are in a town enviroment belong in town.

You should also move "Napoleonic wars" from Pirates to History in my opinion :classic:

Since the minifigs used for making a Napoleonic MOC or army are the often same ones as the Imperial Soldiers (or Guards for the English) it makes a lot of sense to keep them in the Pirates forum. But it's of course debatable.

Siegfried, I love how you've illustrated this thematic change through an exploration of various Cafe Corner mods and mocs. What a great example! It probably raises just as many questions as it answers about the limits and boundaries of acceptable categories , but as a statement of inclusivity (the translation of a high end Creator exclusive into various unexpected manifestations), this is a great introduction to the ambition and scope of the new Sci Fi forum.

Sounds great. The changes generally make sense and will prevent the overlap there was between this section and Other Themes. Also, I love that first space themed Cafe Corner you have there.

One suggestion I have though:

So now you know what the "Sci-Fi" forum is about, what isn't it about?

Underwater LEGO themes

I'm not which which themes you are referring to here, but 1990s Aquazone is something that really should go in here, given how encompassing the new forum would be otherwise. The old Aquazone lines had a lot in common with Space in terms of overall design and stylistic aspects, which is one reason I like that the theme. In fact, some of them could be easily thought of as spacecraft if TLG didn't tell us what they were.

I'm referring to all underwater themes. I must confess that I agree with what you've said... but we needed more themes to flesh out the new "Action" forum.

Yes, that was the idea! :sweet: Please note everyone that the pictures are links if you want to see more...

I can see the rationale for it considering the link to Alpha Team's underwater theme. If you need more stuff in the other section though, it might make sense to move Steampunk or Zombie instead. Although some Steampunk models can be like Space in overall concept, their appearance and colors are very different from traditional Space models, while zombies aren't really sci-fi at all.

A fine change that is indeed. I always thought that Space&Mecha´s a little too limited, although the term makes sense

in a LEGO related historic context.

It´s also fine to see that the term Sci-Fi´s here used in a more generous way... although this might confuse

some hardcore Sci-Fi fans, but I always preferred to define that genre in a more open and Speculative Fiction-like way too.

Of course, with the new Action subforum and themes like TimeCruisers, Dino, PowerMiners and Agents it seems pretty hard

and haphazardly to draw boundaries...

The name change makes perfect sense, and sounds more inclusive.

I'm glad you didn't opt for the totally ridiculous "SyFy" like the Sci-Fi Channel did. ;-)
