I Scream Clone Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 With the awesome work from all around the world contributing to the Community Castle Build I couldn't allow the Castle to go without a Gatehouse truly worthy of all the other great creations. I hope you all like it. I created this topic to revive the interest in finishing off all the modules and to show a lot more pictures than I allow in the Beta and Alpha Threads. Here is a link to the pinned discussion thread too. Cheers I dedicate this MOC to Stash2sixx, he is a top bloke and great member of Eurobricks. Castle Gatehouse I'm not sure the name of the building in the middle but the holes in the floor were called Murder Holes, the boiling oil is tipped down on raiders attacking the castle gates, however rocks and other things were used more often as oil was a precious commodity in Medieval times. More pictures can be seen by changing the numbers at the end from 001-035 http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Iscreamclone/Castle/EBCCB/Gatehouse/015.jpg The Community Castle needs you? Quote
cole Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 Wow, this is amazing, You've packed so much detail in it. My favorite little detail is the garden though, I love the carrots and cabbages. The round towers are a pretty amazing feat also. Theres honestly nothing bad in this. Quote
Matn Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 Great work! I love the building techniques you used, those corners of the house are nice. The gatehouse looks very impressive at the outside, you worked it out perfect. And you even put an interior in it, just fantastic. The details are also good. Quote
Duke Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 This is great, I love the scale of it suggesting a huge castle and the buildings behind the walls are a nice touch too. Quote
I Scream Clone Posted June 20, 2009 Author Posted June 20, 2009 Thank you very much guys, glad you like the internal details too. Cheers Quote
Dragonator Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 Beautifully done mate, what a great creation to have at the front of the castle! Beautifully done, and a true inspiration for people to get back into the spirit. It makes me feel very guilty for not actually finishing something yet. Once I've completed my current project I should set myself to building something for he castle. I'm loving the two towers and all the details around the gate, particularly the curved walls and the window arches. The inside is just awesome as well, with lots of bustling village life. The vege garden i a nice touch. Good work, I'm glad to see the EBCCB being rebooted and prepared for another round of MOCs. Quote
Teddy Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 This is pure class mate. The scale is perfect for the Community Castle Build. Normally i'm not a big fan of using tubes and bricks to make a round wall, but the way you've done it it actually looks organic. The zigzag pattern for the tubes and the color changes work well to give that technique a better look. And luckely you haven't over done it. It reminds me a lot of a city gatehouse I saw in Koln (Germany). The house behind the wall is great and it is really realistic so close to the wall. The little details such as the jail the garden and the interior finish it off. The only improvements I could think off would be double doors and a double porticullis. Linky to portcullis on wiki To make a vestibule to trap invaders after they broke the first door and pick them off while they are trapped. And you could make the doors seal tight at the top as well. There is a little gap there now. But that wouldn't change the overall appereance which is great. It would just add to the playability to trap those trolls. We have broken through the first door wheey... catacling trapped... Quote
Dr. Steve Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 That's Awesome, I really like the technique you used on the roof in the 1st pic with the brown tile Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 Excellent work buddy, the layout and details are prefectly excecuted! Foodfight on!! Quote
Ratshot Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 Most impressive My favorite part is the soldier with the war hammer. You don't see a lot of those in MOC's Quote
Sandy Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 Oh wow, that's amazing! There's just so many zany things going on, so it really fits the mood of the EBCCT-town! The techniques and the variety in colors and surfaces you've used are also very refreshing, from the window sills to the tower tops. No "Big Grey Wall"-syndrome here! After seeing this, I feel embarrased to even show my WIP-castle here... I'm just running out of bricks, so I have to use all these big wall pieces, so naturally the look isn't nearly as consistent and stylish as your MOC's. Oh well... Quote
Wout Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 Oh, this looks great. Love the little vegtable garden. Quote
Commander Flash Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 So many great points, the towers, inside, and the overall model. Good work Quote
Thrash Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 This is so awesome ISC...I think you've just inspired me to start building for the EBCCB again! Even though the gatehouse is perfect in every single way and all the techniques you used were done perfect, my favorite part of this MOC is the Jester running around with a goofy grin and a turkey. ~Thrash Quote

I was hoping you would point me in the direction of improvements Teddy, you knowledge of castles is greatly appreciated, thanks for the nice comments about the curved walls too, took a while to blend them in to the surrounds. Excellent work buddy, the layout and details are prefectly excecuted! Foodfight on!! Cheers, now you know what I was busy building Most impressive My favorite part is the soldier with the war hammer. Thats the real challenge Sandy, trying to get past the "big grey wall" syndrome! Never be embarrased by what you can build, MOCs come in all shapes and sizes and all have some inner beauty to them. Besides I have seen your work in the CCB and those tan towers were great! Oh, this looks great. Love the little vegtable garden. Cheers Wout, thanks for the nice words. Quote
kris kelvin Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 It looks very, very solid I like this MOC very much. Classic Castle Quote
gormadoc1 Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 This si realy impresive, the design is fantastic and the minfigs go perfect in the scene. Its just fantastic. Quote
Captain Blackmoor Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 I really like it ISC! There are a lot of details in there, and I like the architecture. I think the brown path looks better once it's in tan. It blends a little with the other details and the gate. Nice job! Quote
General Armendariz Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Magnificent gatehouse! I love every part of this awesome beauty Quote
def Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Great architectural details here. I love the tavern, and I love the brown roofs. I don't have the grey pieces to even think about trying something like this, so you're an inspiration! Quote
I Scream Clone Posted June 22, 2009 Author Posted June 22, 2009 Thank you all again! It has taken a little while to accumulate the huge amount of grey bricks etc, but I really like how it turned out. Now if I can just inspire another person to take Castle building up, my work is done. Cheers Quote
Sir Dillon Posted June 23, 2009 Posted June 23, 2009 The structure looks great, with a good balance of strength and ornamental detail. I agree with Teddy about the curved walls: usually I don't care for them, but you've blended them into the rest of the creation nicely. The tudor building is well made, I like the spiky corners and the protruding beams. I think the turn table bases look out of place and tacked on though. The main thing I don't care for is the staircase. You probably don't have enough room to make it parallel to the wall, but the combination of thin wooden steps and the solid stone wall coming straight out of the wall like that doesn't look good, in my opinion. I also don't think there is enough dark grey in the towers compared to the surrounding walls, but that's just getting picky. Overall, this is a very cool creation filled with lots of fun details. Great work. Quote
Abaddon127 Posted June 23, 2009 Posted June 23, 2009 You did a really great job. I especially love the curved walls, and mixed in dark bley bricks with the rest of the stonework. The level of detail is good too. Quote
I Scream Clone Posted June 23, 2009 Author Posted June 23, 2009 The structure looks great, with a good balance of strength and ornamental detail. I agree with Teddy about the curved walls: usually I don't care for them, but you've blended them into the rest of the creation nicely. It was important to blend the curved walls into the straight walls of the CCB design. The tudor building is well made, I like the spiky corners and the protruding beams. I think the turn table bases look out of place and tacked on though. I agree about the turntable bases, I had forgotten i placed them on until looking through the photos, as for the Tudor building I was very happy with all the detailing I was able to put into it. The main thing I don't care for is the staircase. You probably don't have enough room to make it parallel to the wall, but the combination of thin wooden steps and the solid stone wall coming straight out of the wall like that doesn't look good, in my opinion. I wanted it to be parallel in to sections but the space limitations drove me crazy. So I had to resort to the brown stairs. As for the grey wall, I just couldnt come up with a good way to close in one side of the stairs to create storage on the other side. I also don't think there is enough dark grey in the towers compared to the surrounding walls, but that's just getting picky. Nonsense, I appreciate your critique. When someone takes the time to improve my work it will only get better. Thanks You did a really great job. I especially love the curved walls, and mixed in dark bley bricks with the rest of the stonework. The level of detail is good too. I like a bit of a mix to break it up and show wear and tear as well as what quality of stone was available in Medieval times. Quote
