Doesnt make much sense, Ebay was created as practicaly an online Garge sale you sell things you dont want anymore or things you can make money off of. Its like getting in trouble for seling your LEGO at a garage sale at home. (then again if i heard you were selling you LEGO to somone other than me you would be in trouble  )

eBay was created to get PEZ dispensers....

I still don't think Lego is one of the companies. Have they had a press release (even in the underbelly of lawyer news?) stating that they plan to persue eBay over re-sale of their product? Has there even been so much as a whispered rumour about it?

Nope.

When pigs fly...

Companies can ask legislators for whatever they want. It doesn't mean that they're going to get it. This is essentially asking governments to change the ownership rights associated with your property (which includes the right of resale) to a licence with a strict set of conditions that you never agreed to on initial purchase. Can you imagine the international outrage that would be associated with any such legislation? Essentially such a move would pave the way for companies to lobby for further retroactive restrictions on the resale of personal property. Want to sell your car? Forget it. Have some old furniture or other chattels your looking to move? Too bad. This is a slippery slope that no rational legislator would dare to meddle with.

I doubt LEGO would be involved in this.

What this is about is companies who make products that are easy to fake in a way that is hard to spot in an eBay auction. The problem for companies like Gucci or Luis Vitton or Rolex is that its almost impossible to tell a fake handbag or watch or whatever from a real one just from a picture. Because the fakes are so good and because its almost impossible to tell a fake from a real one based on the info from an eBay auction, these companies want all eBay auctions of their products banned (they argue its the only way to completly stop fake auctions)

I agree with eBay in that people should be allowed to resell legitimate product. And I agree with companies like Gucci that they should be able to stop fake product from being sold (on eBay or elsewhere). But I dont agree that these companies should have the right to control the resale of legitimately purchased products.

I just wish the media companies would do more about all the pirate CDs and DVDs that flood eBay (instead of going after some guy who downloaded a song, listened to it and liked it so much that they went and bought a whole CD by the same artist)

1. So far its only EU, i know allot of sellers on Au and USA will ship to the EU.

2. Its not confirmed lego so just relax.

3. I can understand why lego would sign onto this, eBay prices especially mini figures, even more especially star wars figures are extortionist, but then eBay is the only place you can get old sets.

4. Yes they do, it was a fan based partition that got a movie for babylon. i believe it was also a partition that got more sg1 movies.

Partitions do work, it depends on the company, lego might be more willing as they care about customers, but a partition to get microsoft to be more open source friendly and less monopolising isn't going to work.

The fakes argument is over, not one set that isn't lego is tagged as Lego. It'll say "lego like" or "Compatible with major brands."

Do you mean on the boxes? Because several sellers on eBay try to pass off Megacrap as Lego.

eBay was created to get PEZ dispensers....

Seriously? I know people actually collect them, but wow...

...but then eBay is the only place you can get old sets.

1.--eBay is not the only place you can get old sets. Bricklink has millions of them, and Eurobricks itself even has a Buy/Sell/etc. forum specifically for that.

2.--Are you talking about petitions?

Lol, sorry mate he got you good, that Pez stuff is rubbish, its an old rumour, if you can believe it, it was founded by a French born Iranian man in San J`ose California, in fact the first thing sold was a broken laser printer.

The frequently repeated story that eBay was founded to help Omidyar's fiancée trade Pez Candy dispensers was fabricated by a public relations manager in 1997 to interest the media. This was revealed in Adam Cohen's 2002 book, The Perfect Store,[4] and confirmed by eBay

Yeah true, but BL is all in American, and that's all good and well if you are one, but if your an Australian like me its not, currently $1Au gets 80cents USA, which isn't too bad, better than 60 it was thanks to the global recession.

Yes i meant that, partitions lol, got pc on the brain was helping a guy with formatting questions.

Odd one. Well, Lego hasn't announced that they are planning to stop re-sale of their products on eBay.

Sorry for my late reply. What I mean by tagged as Lego-Compatible is just that, they don't call it Lego, they call 'em building bricks that can combine with major brands. I have seen Mega products called Lego, but you can see that they aren't the same, however these are private sellers who have no clue what their kids toys are. Business sellers don't call anything that isn't Lego, Lego.

And DarthSion, "He" was me...

I guess I don't rabidly keep up with eBay history, I just read about it in TIME, National Geographic or The Readers Digest a while back (I was still in school at the time. so at least three years ago) and didn't notice when this was revealed to be a marketing gimmick.

Ho Hum.

I still think it's the yuppie nuTech firms and computer hawkers who have rabid fanbois.

I finally got that stupid mail this weekend...

The only thing I could consider (but not agreeing with), is that a brand doesn't want to see its products sold by eBay retailers (I mean NEW). Just like Apple is doing for the iPhone. I guess, for example, that Apple and AT&T don't like to see unlocked Australian iPhones going by dozens on eBay.com at crazy 'Buy it Now' prizes (between 1000 and 1500$ each!). Just like in Australia, our iPhones are not SIM-locked here in Belgium, as that kind of practices are forbidden by commercial laws... until recent court decisions made at European level. The 'SIM-lock' in this case is a way to tell who might sell the product and who doesn't. If an iPhone is officially not SIM-locked, that means you can chose any operator and still can access all Apple services (including updates, iTunes, etc.). If this is legally possible, I guess other brands might have the idea to find a legal way to chose their dealers...

Now, they probably would be quite angry at eBay if some very expensive items could no longer be sold - new - on their platform. I have the strange feeling that they are 'using' us to prevent it by arguing that this matter could also affect the 'second hand market' which is... highly improbable.

Anyway, this is probably only about a few brands with very agressive marketing practices (with Apple as being the worst of all). I really doubt TLC has even consider anything like that...
