Glacarcheo Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 I'm just getting into Technic, but I don't want to go overboard, so I'm asking you Technic peoplz which sets (from '04 to now) are the best. This is so I can "test the water". Quote
merman Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 Basically you ask about the best sets in the studless age. I prefer studless over studded because the building process is more interesting imho. My faves: - 8455 Backhoe, not sure if this is 2004. Lots of pneumatics. Harf to find for a good price. - 8421 Crane. Love this set. Interesting build, lots of functions, realistic and looks great. - 8285 Tow Truck - my return from the dark ages. Great set. Great functions, great looks. Sold it once. Regretted it and bought a new one. It is huge. - 8275 Bulldozer. Not very interesting to build but the power functions are great and it looks great. - 8258 Crane Truck. Don't have it yet, but saw some pics of the gearbox. It is amazing Quote
CP5670 Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 8455 was actually from 2003 and, as you say, is hard to get for a reasonable price these days. I think 8275 was the best set after that one. These are all $120+ flagship sets though, and probably not what the OP had in mind to "test the water." Some good medium-sized ones from the last few years are 8292, 8294 and the newly released 8263. The first two are still easy to find for close to their original prices. Quote
Glacarcheo Posted July 12, 2009 Author Posted July 12, 2009 (edited) Thanks for all the advice guys! So far I think there are a few medium sets I'm contemplating on: - 8294 Excavator - 8265 Front Loader - 8416 Forklift - 8284 Tractor - 8264 Hauler and these are some that I'm not to sure about... - 8292 Cherry Picker - 8288 Crawler Crane - 8263 Snow Groomer - 8435 4WD - 8420 Street Bike Please tell me which or if any of these sets are good and why. Thank you! Note: I consider medium to be more than 500 pieces but less than 1000. Edit: What does it mean when you cal me the OP? Edited July 12, 2009 by Glacarcheo Quote
CP5670 Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 (edited) 8265 should be the best and most mechanically interesting set if it's in your price range. I'm not sure if anyone here has it yet, but it looks very similar to the old 8459 and should be a great model. If you want something with a motor, 8292 is better than 8264. 8288 is pretty nice, but surprisingly expensive on ebay given how recent it was. OP means original poster. merman Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 Ok sorry about only naming flagships - 8284 Tractor is very good. Smart design, interesting build - 8284 Excavator I heard is quite good. I do not have it - 8292 Cherry Picker. Very nice and elegant and with motor. I would not recommend 8264, not many gears - 8265 Looks great and has 3 LA's - 8273 Off Road Truck is pretty neat too. Blue Lego is nice and it looks nice too Quote
Glacarcheo Posted July 12, 2009 Author Posted July 12, 2009 Just theorizing, but if I could only get three of the eight studless over 1000 piece sets, which should I get? - 8436 Truck - 8421 Mobile Crane - 8285 Tow Truck - 8274 Combine Harvester - 8275 Motorized Bulldozer - 8297 Off Roader - 8294 Telescopic Handler - 8258 Crane Truck Quote
Siegfried Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 - 8294 Excavator Own and like. Good source of ne parts. - 8265 Front Loader Don't own but want. - 8284 Tractor Don't own but want due to colours and wheels. - 8264 Hauler Don't own and don't like. Not enough functions for the price. - 8292 Cherry Picker Own and like. Good part source and good functionality - 8288 Crawler Crane Own and love. It works very well. - 8263 Snow Groomer Don't own but want. Read the nice review... Just theorizing, but if I could only get three of the eight studless over 1000 piece sets, which should I get? - 8421 Mobile Crane - 8275 Motorized Bulldozer - 8258 Crane Truck I have all but the last. Buying these three would give you a great range of parts. 8288 is pretty nice, but surprisingly expensive on ebay given how recent it was. It wasn't well stocked; I needed to buy it at S@H. Quote
Glacarcheo Posted July 13, 2009 Author Posted July 13, 2009 (edited) Thanks Sieg! Sadly I doubt I'll ever get the Crawler Crane, it costs more than the new Crane Truck! So now it's narrowed down to these seven and I want three: - 8294 Excavator - 8284 Tractor - 8292 Cherry Picker - 8263 Snow Groomer - 8416 Forklift - 8435 4WD - 8420 Street Bike Thanks to everyone who has helped so far! Siegfried Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 So now it's narrowed down to these seven and I want three: To me the obvious choices are... - 8294 Excavator - 8292 Cherry Picker - 8263 Snow Groomer ...due to ease of availability. Quote
Glacarcheo Posted July 13, 2009 Author Posted July 13, 2009 Okay, I'm going to get the Excavator, Front Loader and a toss up between the big Fork-lift, the Cherry Picker, and the Telescopic Handler. Quote
CP5670 Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 Okay, I'm going to get the Excavator, Front Loader and a toss up between the big Fork-lift, the Cherry Picker, and the Telescopic Handler. The Cherry Picker might be the best choice because you can use its motor and battery box with the other two models. Those models have multiple linear actuators and will benefit a lot from a motor. Blakbird Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 There was a somewhat similar topic in this thread, so you might read through that one. I agree with the other posters. The big "flagship" sets mentioned are excellent, as are many of the smaller construction vehicles. I'd take the cherry picker over the hauler, and the tracked excavator is very good. Quote
Milan Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 My favorites are (flagships) : 8455 Backhoe 8421 Crane The greatest amount of functions, great parts, overall look. It is better to get 2 flagships than 3 smaller sets, imho. But, those choice you made is great too, you can not make wrong choice with sets Quote
Burf2000 Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 The crane, supercar, tow truck and bulldozer would cover most of your needs Quote
Routemaster Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 8273 Off Road Truck: over 800 pieces, alot fun to built, lots of function and play value, looks good. I think this set is a good choice for you. Quote
