Lyichir Posted December 2, 2012 Posted December 2, 2012 (edited) The new episode of MLP:FiM was indeed great. For the pony fans here, I was wondering, do you think My Little Pony could use its own Culture and Multimedia topic? After all, at this point there's a lot more to it than just the show (toys, books, comics, mobile games, etc.). Not to mention discussion of the fandom itself. Does anyone else think this would be a good idea? Edited December 2, 2012 by Lyichir Quote

After all, at this point there's a lot more to it than just the show (toys, books, comics, mobile games, etc.). Not to mention discussion of the fandom itself. Does anyone else think this would be a good idea? There use to be a topic, but it got canned. It was when I was in my dark ages, and before I started watching MLP:FiM. I understand the reason. I think we should probably has a general video game thread and movie thread, too. This topic is basically the MLP:FiM topic, as it makes up most of the recent posts. Quote
Amset-Rah Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 Magic Duel had it all: Enough fanservice to satisfy without deviating from the plot, plenty of subtle movie references (Gremlins in the beginning, Star Wars while Twilight is training with Zecora as Yoda, etc), lots of continuity (The episode itself is continuity alone), and I think I got diabeetus from Fluttershy. Dannylonglegs Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 I've recently watched all of both Baccano! and Durarara!!, the former Dubbed and the latter Subbed, and I love them. They're both excellent and I believe, both by the same guy. (I think he also did Vamp! which may be my next series to watch.) I adore Isaac and Miria, who are crazy awesome, and from Durarara, I think my favorite character is Shinra, who I can totally see myself in. Does anyone who's watched either of these Animes have a suggestion as to which I should watch next? And if you like Anime and haven't seen these (or don't like anime), then I suggest you see them because they are soo good. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote
just2good Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Forgot to post about the new MLP:FiM episode yesterday, Sleepless in Ponyville. It was another really cute episode! Scootaloo was adorable, but I think Rainbow Dash should have had more of a speaking rule. The Luna cameo was perfect and surprising! Overall, I give the episode an 8.5/10. Quote
Walter Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 (edited) Yeah the episode was pretty neat. It really got me thinking about Scootaloo's character. Did anyone notice any outside references or easter eggs in this one? I don't recall spotting much, although there was a good deal of references to past episodes. The characters have really grown and developed since season 1. Edited December 10, 2012 by Walter Quote

Walter Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Well the whole scene where Sweetie Belle convinces Rarity to come on the camping trip seems like it is a very subtle callback to the "Sisterhooves Social" episode. Maybe it isn't exactly a reference, but I feel like the growth between these two characters since that episode is very obvious. Also in the scene where Rainbow Dash decides to tell the campfire story, Quote
just2good Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Also in the scene where Rainbow Dash decides to tell the campfire story, Oh yea, I forgot about that. Good reference, though. OH, and on the new TMNT series, I might watch the first few episodes. Those LEGO sets are so interesting, they've pulled me in. Is it good, even for someone who has never had any interest in old TMNT stuff? Quote
Walter Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 (edited) Well I've been watching the new series and I haven't ever really watched its other incarnations. It is fairly enjoyable, and the humor and action fit the show well. It has quite an interesting style. Edited December 10, 2012 by Walter Quote

Although, I must admit, I'm more of a Celty fan (Shizuo too). Other good animes are Kuroko no Basuke, Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo (although it's very shoujo), Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night, and Mirai Nikki (although it's absolutely horrible, there's still a lot of watchablitity to it. Oky Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 Yeah, this episode was just OK until Lunaception happened which made it pretty good. Makes me wonder if Celestia can enter day dreams. Magic Duel wasn't bad either, but it was predictable and felt like one big fan service. Gotta love those Fluttershy moments though. Did anyone notice any outside references or easter eggs in this one? I don't recall spotting much, although there was a good deal of references to past episodes. Nope. Not many easter eggs this season. Where are you Derpy? OH, and on the new TMNT series, I might watch the first few episodes. Those LEGO sets are so interesting, they've pulled me in. Is it good, even for someone who has never had any interest in old TMNT stuff? Yes, it's definitely an enjoyable show, as I said a couple of pages ago. I never got into TMNT before this series either, but this is one of my favorite shows currently. I still prefer the 2003 series though. Quote
CM4Sci Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 Saw the newest MLP "Wonderbolts Academy" a little early: The episode was a very good one. Not the best, but a good one. Spitfire's voice is different and her attitude is a little nastier than The Best Night Ever (and other episodes). Still no Derpy though. And we never get to see what's in the care package! D: Overall, 9.5/10. -Sci Quote
Peppermint_M Posted December 13, 2012 Author Posted December 13, 2012 AS did I. So, Spitfire was the classic Drill Seargent Nasty. A family friend of mine told me of his days in the RAF in the 50s and they matched that trope to a T with our favourite Wonderbolt Captain. I would like to make the argument for the pegasus with the mustache to be called Viper due to TOP GUN reasons... That was a good episode. Quote
just2good Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 Saw the new MLP:FiM episode early today, too. Overall, I thought the episode was a step just above okayness. I liked how Snowflake had a couple of cameos in this episode, and the story itself was not so bad. But, I've seen a billion military parodies. Additionally, Lightning Dust was a pretty cool character, but I really wish she had more of a back story or introduction. I really despised the quick turnaround to make Lightning Dust a rude pony, close to an antagonist. I kinda was starting to kinda feel bad for her. Overall, 7.25/10 Quote

Oh, if you like Durarara, you're sure to like Baccano!! It's a blast! It's more light-hearted, but it's far from childish. I can't get over how good it is. Of the characters, I'd have to say, Isaac and Mirian is my favorite character (and I use the single tense because they're inseparable... and insufferable stupid in the best ways.) Ladd's great too. I find his voice in the Dubb so funny. Oh gods, and the Jazz! I agree, Celty is such a great character! I like IZAYA!!1!ONE!! too. I've got a thing for Chess-Master Baddies. I've since watched Death-Note too, and I have to say, I liked Baccano and Durarara better. I loved the first arc, but when L died, and they introduced his replacements it sort of lost it's magic. I should have followed the advice of my Anime addicted friend and quit at the first arc. (I just couldn't stop though.) Mikami was an interesting character. I liked him. I also liked Light's character. Idealist villians and those that just like trolling are my favorite kinds, and more often then not, a great villain leads the show. I'm currently working through Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. It's great, but it's more childish than I'd hoped. I'll look into your suggestions when I finish FAB. I've only recently discovered my love of Anime, so I have allot to catch up on. I figured you would know which Animes to suggest. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote

I also wasn't a fan of the ending; it was such a perfect plan that Light had laid out, and suddenly it all gets ruined just because Mikami forgot to cover his tracks going to the bank. So lame. I found this a few months back; better ending imo. And yeah, Mikami's my favorite. I'm currently working through Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. It's great, but it's more childish than I'd hoped. I found this a few months back; better ending imo. Yeah, especially since Near was just a blander version of L. There's a reason his hair doesn't have colour. I agree! Didn't Light choose him because he was smart/did what light would without even asking? Wouldn't he, knowing that the Kira-Hunters had replaced the pages in the fake book, cover his bases and check to see if the real book had been replaced or at least go back and write on old pages like he had with Takada? Also, Light could have covered his bases by writing "at 2 hours after they arrive Aizawa shoots and kills everybody in the room with him aside from Light, starting with 'N,' followed by anyone with a gun, followed by those remaining, and then commits suicide." Ugh. Near's attempt at a counter plan were really meager, but tragically, they worked. And yeah, Mikami's my favorite. Sekujo! I'll tell you more when I finish it, but coming from Baccano, Durarara, and Death-Note, it's a good bit more goofy. I like it allot. I'm watching it. The plot's interesting, but it's more goofy than Baccano. I didn't watch Naruto (I did read the Manga though) but I imagine it's just a bit more mature than that. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote

This one being correctly aligned to the Manga plot means it's one of the most tightly plotted, well crafted stories I have ever read or watched! Sorry, when I said that I had only gotten a few episodes in, and hadn't quite gotten accustomed to the style of animation that goes on when they get angry or cute. I'm now at the Battle of Briggs, and I can seriously say it's not all that childish anymore. Also, in the beginning it's a bit more episodic then it is now, and I thought it would be sort-of bad-guy of the weekish. I'm really liking it. There are still goofy bits, but they don't detract from the Anime at all. I think what I mean by childish is that a younger audience could watch it and stay interested, not that it was designed for a younger audience. It's not as dark or serious as Durarara (yet, again, I'm less than half-way through), but it is really entertaining. I think a good comparison would be Avatar the Last Air-Bender. That show has it's goofy moments, but also provides a serious, entertaining plot. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote

It always felt kind of...real to me, you know. I mean not the alchemy or philosopher stone bits, but I felt like it was kind of like a story about life. Does that make sense? I tend to space out at FMA Brotherhood. To this date it is the only series I watched completely twice, as I have an obsessive complusion not to watch "younger" parts of a story, a.k.a the start. But my love of it overpowers the oc. Plus this was the series that pushed me towards shipping. (Greeling Fan, Almei, Edwin, Royai) Which reminds me, I need to rewatch the episodes again. Quote

Tanma Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 (edited) Something I always worried about in Fullmetal Alchemist is that we know they can transmute elements. The only reason they don't transform objects into gold is because it would destroy the economy. And since their world is at an alternate 1914-1915, I can't help but wonder what would happen once they discover uranium, if they could synthesis it as well. It would create cheap powerful fuel for technology, but Alchemists could potentially create nuclear bombs from scratch. A single Alchemist could wipe out a city. Speaking of which; (spoilers for those who haven't seen the end.) When Father creates that star in the palm of his hand, a bunch of the heroes were in close proximity. Ignoring Greeling since he could regenerate, Alphonse because he was, well a suit of armor, and Hohenheim died not too long later, isn't it possibly that all of them absorbed a large about of radiation, especially when Father began to lose control. Dannylonglegs Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 (edited) Ah ha. Hmm, on that comparison I'd say things get a little darker still later on. Hm, well, I just finished it, and the ending was really epic. Everything came together really well. The storm on the castle was particularly great. I just love the Briggs boys so much General Armstrong was the most bad-megablocks character, in my opinion. It definitely gets darker, even more so than Avatar, I'd say, but the two are still quite similar in many ways. The same anachronistic, steampunky, 1900ey feel applies to them both. (Or at least to FAB and Legends of Korra.) I should have realized that it wouldn't be that childish the whole way through... The tone really shifts around the time of the child-dog chimera, Hughes' death, and the flashback of what the brothers did with that black corpse creature. All three of those would be super freaky to young kids. I was so sad when Hughes died. He was such a loving child-kidnapper. It was really cathartic when Mustang curb-stomped the ever-loving shit out of Envy. I was thinking, "Yes, Mustang, yes. His punishment must be more severe." Father's plan seemed a lot like a batman gambit looking back on it, and it could all have been avoided if the brothers and their teacher hadn't shown up to the fight. Pride could only force one person to open the gate before he crumbled into nothingness, so they really could not have continued if the boys and the teacher hadn't shown. Ha. Man I love/loved Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. It always felt kind of...real to me, you know. Wow, even though I really like it, I wouldn't watch the whole thing twice. It's about 60 episodes! I also tend not to watch things twice. Shipping always makes me laugh, although you picked ones that make allot of sense (and some that happen in story). It's the wierd ones that I find amusing though, like Pridimblee. (I've seriously heard of that combo and it makes me want to throw up. Those of you who watched it know the obvious reason why.) It's worse than Galen/Beatrice (Galice) in Heroica. Something I always worried about in Fullmetal Alchemist is that we know they can transmute elements. The only reason they don't transform objects into gold is because it would destroy the economy. And since their world is at an alternate 1914-1915, I can't help but wonder what would happen once they discover uranium, if they could synthesis it as well. Ha ha ha ha! I've never thought of that! I'm not sure whether real-life physics and stuff work in this case though, but after all, I'm sure Xingese Alkehistery has a cure for cancer. I'm working my way through Cowboy Bebop now, and it reminds me allot of Blade-Runner and Firefly, with a good bit of Jazz. I'm looking for a more story driven Anime to watch too. Any suggestions? ~Insectoid Aristocrat Edited December 20, 2012 by Dannylonglegs Quote
Tanma Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Yeah, Almei was my start of darkness. They were just too freaking adorable for me to resist. And they both kick butt, so they fulfill the necessary battle couple appeal. But yeah, I tend to ship realistic things, like Momo and Appa. I'm telling you, Appa was teaching Momo how to airbend. There is no other way he could have "glided" up the wall of Ba Sing Se at a ninety degree angle. Not to mention that save when he caught Aang. By the way, any thoughts about Legend of Korra? I was a big fan of Airbender, but I just can't get into Korra. Quote
