So true, what do you think influenced her power anyway? Virgil was electrocuted by the Reach, Eduardo was exposed to a lot of Zeta beam energy, Tye I'm not sure of, I guess it could have been his grandfather's influence or something? But no clue about Asami. Maybe she does a lot of parkour or something?

I don't know what influenced their powers in universe, but I do know that they are all based on characters from the Superfriends (even Virgil, who is obviously Static Shock). So it seems that Lex Luthor is forming his own superfriends! :laugh:

I know, though I really, really hope that isn't their group name. No one will take them seriously, whether they buy into Luther's plan or not. I have to say I think Luther is plotting against the Reach, the Beetles still seemed to be looking for them at episode end, and they didn't know about the robot. So even more sides to the evil civil war. And honestly I prefer Lex over the the Reach, maybe it's the charisma, or maybe it's because he hasn't hurt the runaways yet.

So, I'm all caught up on YJ and I jsut gotta say:

We are cancelling this, this worthy replacement of JLU. This excellent cartoon that is establishing a superior continuity to that of the Nu52 drivel Dididi-di-dio is shoveling out to us. To be replaced with All Comedy (Read: Fart jokes and grade school humour) regurgitation of the now quite old (in media terms) Teen Titans.

Yah, that is super great DC....

Well, at least the DC animated movies are still very good...

As for USM, I agree with most of what Tanma said. The humor is overused and therefore takes away from the tension, especially during those freeze-frame moments, almost as if the show's creators think that kids couldn't handle an uninterrupted tense fight scene and feel the need to jingle keys in front of their nose every once in a while, so to say. And yes, usually when Spidey jokes around, he does it mostly to unnerve himself, not just to entertain the viewer, but in this show the humor is directed straight at the audience. It just doesn't seem like Spidey and cheapens his image. If they wanted to make a Marvel show where the main character constantly interrupts the show to break the fourth wall in order to tell a joke, they may as well have made a Deadpool show (which wouldn't have been a bad idea actually, considering he could use some exposition before he gets his own movie and videogame). I also don't like how they change the origin and identity of many of Spidey's well-known villains. It's OK if they change some stuff around, but completely changing everything we knew about his rogues gallery is unnecessary and probably confuses kids. There's also not a whole lot of continuity or character development which made previous Spidey cartoons so great. I could go on, but I think I'll leave it at that. It's not a terrible show, but it's definitely not good either.

And the runaways just got here! Not to mention Nightwing still hasn't done anything this season, and he and Wally are still fighting. I need more of this! This is why I like Marvel more than you DC, and they do crazy stuff too! Why are you sending your children to the slaughter Marvel? Why?

Keep in mind I was a fan of the original Teen Titans show, I disagree with bringing it back as pure comedy. Some of the best parts of Teen Titans was its drama. Still, the fact that Teen Titans returned after many years gives home that Young Justice may return in some form.

Well, I searched to see if there was a MLP-specific topic that could be revived to discuss the toys, and there is one but it bit the dust ages ago and is now closed (somewhat surprisingly, since it doesn't seem like it got revived... whatever). Guess this discussion can stay here for now, and can be moved if the mods decide it deserves its own topic. Anyway, at Toy Fair some excellent new MLP:FiM toys have been revealed:

Toys 'R' Us Exclusives:

  • Upper left: Shadowbolt (seems like Rainbow Dash's Shadowbolt costume from "Luna Eclipsed", based on the mane color). Probably going to be sold individually without accessories like last year's Zecora.
  • Right: What looks to be a talking Nightmare Moon. I imagine her phrases might be a lot more awesome than the shallow, syrupy phrases of the previous talking princess toys, but I'm not putting money on it. Not planning on getting this one since it's not consistent in scale with the others I have.
  • Lower left: This year's favorites collection. This is one I'm definitely getting. Characters from left to right: Diamond Tiara (new to Playful Ponies scale brushables), Lyra Heartstrings (was sold individually last year), Shining Armor (only Playful Ponies scale stallion, previously only sold as part of the huge pink Wedding Castle playset), Queen Chrysalis (Brand new to toys), Princess Cadance (previously in the Wedding Castle and a couple other playsets, but still a good chance to get this important character), a minor pony (looks like this recurring background pony nicknamed Lyrica), who's also in an upcoming miniatures set), and finally fan-favorite Derpy Hooves. Guess that dispels any rumors that Hasbro was planning on eliminating her for good, even if she hasn't been in the show all season.

Other toys and merch:

Overall, the only thing I'm extremely looking forward to getting is the Favorites Collection, but I'll probably also get the Shadowbolt since I wouldn't want to miss out on it and regret it later. Gonna be another good year for pony, I'd wager!

I saw this week's MLP:FiM just now, and...

It was a little bit better than the past few weeks (still not too good though) but one particularly awesome part was how last week's episode and this week's episode were intertwined. BUT, I hated the amount of continuity in this episode besides that aspect. I don't know, but those little other continuity nods in the first five or so minutes were annoying.

Posted (edited)

And I thought the MLP:FiM hit rock bottom already! :sick:

Seriously though, I know this will not affect the main series. so who care. :tongue:

Eh, I don't have a problem with the idea of it, but I have a feeling this will not be as successful as the main series just by virtue of being derivative. The obvious intent is to create a line of fantasy fashion dolls to compete with Monster High, and thus capture a slightly older demographic of girls who may enjoy MLP:FiM but probably doesn't spend as much on merchandise as the younger girls at whom the toys are generally targeted. And I don't have a problem with that: the idea of human versions of the characters has been a popular one within a significant portion of the fandom, and it's neat to see the brand being pushed in new directions.

However, this will frankly have a hard time making sense to people outside the context of the MLP:FiM brand (after all, even the title "Equestria Girls" doesn't make much sense if people can't make the connection to horses), unlike Monster High which draws its inspiration from well-known horror archetypes. And as such, while this creates a new means of generating revenue from the established fanbase, it does not strike me as something that would be likely to create a whole lot of new fans of the brand as a whole.

There are exceptions, of course. Somebody on deviantART who I was (previously) following recently posted a long, hateful rant against MLP:FiM and bronies, but then later posted something about how they are intrigued by this spin-off. So perhaps this might be an avenue through which some people embarrassed about the perceived childishness of MLP:FiM might be able to better appreciate the show's characters and mythology.

Wooo, I love Monster High!

Oh wait, yeah that... Is it really a problem? I mean we are talking about a franchise for little girls here... So long as the cartoon remains entertaining it'sall good.

I don't really like watching cartoons anymore. When I was really young, however, I'd always watch Scooby Doo. A few years ago I watched Scooby Doo again; laughing at the animation and the storyline. It is really funny to watch them now. Though I'd never admit to doing it.

Oh my gosh, that My Little Pony season finale was stellar. I went to a local meetup to watch it, and it was definitely a great experience.

First of all, it was full of songs. Seven songs total in a half-hour episode-- makes me wonder just what percentage of the running time was taken up by singing. But it didn't at all get tiresome-- the songs consistently moved the plot forward, giving voice to the emotional continuity of the action as various events were being shown. Some of the scenes were montages that could have been done with just background music and snippets of dialogue, like in "The Return of Harmony", but the songs made them that much more enjoyable (especially when so many characters got a chance to sing). The lyrics of the opening number were sweet without being syrupy, much like Pinkie Pie's "Smile Song", and additional musical numbers added a greater level of emotional resonance with the cast.

The animation and visuals in this episode were top-notch. The opening sequence was stellar, echoing the opening titles while still showing a new perspective-- Twilight's perspective-- on the town of Ponyville. All the characters' movements were very fluid, and a lot of effects-- like the reflections on the Mane Six's eyes when their Elements of Harmony and cutie marks were put back in sync-- were completely new to the series. It was easy to see some animé inspiration in the various magical effects that occurred throughout the episode. All the visuals were also well-matched to the music.

The episode managed to offset the many feels with a bit of lighthearted humor from time to time. Perhaps the most memorable instance has to be Pinkie Pie's off-the-cuff spit take towards the end. There were lots of great background gags, such as the baffling non-equine anatomies of some of Applejack's awful dresses. And of course let's not forget the return of Derpy Hooves, who many people were ready to assume had been killed off by executive meddling (which is baffling at this point, since she's going to be appearing in a toy on store shelves later this year-- perhaps, though, some people feel that a character's appearance in the show amounts to greater legitimacy than appearance in a toy).

Overall, some parts of the episode seemed to go a bit quickly, but I don't think that was a bad thing. The episode didn't move in an abrupt, jerky fashion, but rather flowed very smoothly from exposition to climax to resolution. I think making this episode a two-parter would have stretched it out unnecessarily and possibly made it feel a bit less cohesive. And on the whole, this episode was a great capstone to what has transpired in the series so far, and presents a great number of storytelling opportunities for the seasons to come. Truly it's a more ambitious episode than many cartoons of this kind would attempt, given its capacity to shake up the status quo. I think that should be viewed with admiration, not skepticism.

A big congratulations to the people at DHX Media, the bronies who were willing to give this episode a chance, and of course Her Royal Highness Twilight Sparkle. :classic:

Yesterday's young justice pleased me. Aside from Jade being perfect, Nightwing did things! Things were done, by Nightwing. I have waited for him to do anything since season two began. And next week is runways 2: this time it's personal. Why are they canceling this again?

Indeed, the MLP: FiM season finale was pretty good, but I also felt a little underwhelmed.

First, the good stuff. It was a well-executed musical with a lot of nice songs that all carried on the plot. Considering the 20 minute runtime, the producers did a good job on this. The story itself was nice and very typical for the show, and it probably could have worked on its own without the songs too. And obviously there was a good bit of character development too.

What didn't I like? Well, I must agree that it felt a bit rushed. It quickly went from one thing to another and before you knew it, the episode was over. I'm not sure if it would have worked as a two-parter, but perhaps it would have been better if they would have left one or two of the songs or scenes out so that they could have taken their time with some of the more important scenes. For example, was the scene of Twilight moping around about what she had done really necessary? It was kind of a boring scene and it didn't really seem like her to give up so easily. Also, is it just me or did all the songs sound kind of similar? Perhaps this was the intend, to give the episode a unified musical feel, but given the number of songs here, I think I would have preferred it if there was a bit more variety in the styles of music like there was in, say, A Canterlot Wedding.

Another problem were the plot holes. It was never explained what the spell Twilight completed was actually supposed to do. Also, there are as many questions about how ponies become alicorns and princesses now as there were before, if not even more. And seeing how apparently anypony can be crowned a princess by other princesses as long as they meet the criteria, it makes wonder once again: Who the heck are the king and queen of Equestria? This is a common issue with princess-type characters; it is often never known who or where their parents are and why the princess is in charge and not them. Anyway, moving on, it was also not really explained how this will change the show, but I guess we'll find out in the next season.

Another reason why I wasn't able to enjoy this episode quite as much as I could have is that I couldn't resist reading some major spoilers before seeing it which I usually try to avoid. This way I knew what was going to happen and had certain expectations. For instance, seeing the mane 6 with swapped professions was not as hilarious as I thought it would be. But I guess I have no one to blame but myself for that.

Overall, I can't help but feel underwhelmed by this season. Not only was it surprisingly short (Seriously? Only 13 episodes?) but most of the episodes were very mediocre. None of them really stuck out to me as especially good or bad, so it was all just "okay". I never suspected it to surpass the brilliance that was the second season, but I would have expected it to be a bit more memorable than this. There were other disappointments such as the lack of easter eggs too, and this rather short finale made it seem the more unimpressive. I'm not saying it's bad, it's just not as good as the previous seasons. Oh well, at least it sets us up for an interesting fourth season (which I'm happy to hear will be 26 episodes) so lets see what it will bring us.

I felt Twilight's solo there was actually quite helpful to the plot, chiefly because it shifted the tone from "ha ha look at these ponies doing things they're not good at" to "oh shoot their lives are ruined and the whole town is suffering for it". Really, the montage that played in the background of that song was more essential to the plot than the song itself, but I don't think cutting the song would have helped, since it would have to be replaced with either dialogue or an instrumental piece, neither of which I think would have the same emotional resonance.

Anyway, moving on, it was also not really explained how this will change the show, but I guess we'll find out in the next season.

There are in fact governmental structures ruled by princes/princesses; they're called principalities. So in that sense a king or queen is not necessary. The reason Celestia is a princess rather than a queen is that thanks to Disney films and other related factors, young kids tend to associate princesses with the more virtuous side of royalty and queens with evil or oppression.

As for some of those other factors, it would have been nice to have more answers to these things, but I think it would have bogged down the third act with exposition. Incidentally, this is part of why I don't think a two-parter would have worked-- it would have allowed more time for exposition, but most of that would end up shoved into the second part, and thus you'd have one fun, action-packed episode and one that is slow and cumbersome.

I tried to avoid spoilers, but I did read a friend's Facebook post before I saw the episode that said it was severely underwhelming. So while I certainly didn't expect the worst (I've been able to enjoy even the weaker episodes of the series just fine, after all), I didn't go in with extremely heightened expectations. That might have helped me to enjoy it.

Overall, I can't help but feel underwhelmed by this season. Not only was it surprisingly short (Seriously? Only 13 episodes?) but most of the episodes were very mediocre. I'd say there were a few episodes I'd call "good" overall. Some of them that stood out as really good for me were "One Bad Apple" and "Sleepless in Ponyville", but of course I typically have a soft spot for slice-of-life episodes, particularly those like "One Bad Apple" that include a song. "Keep Calm and Flutter On" was also quite enjoyable in my opinion. And this finale was definitely a solid capstone to the series so far, in my opinion, even if it doesn't necessarily rank the highest as a stand-alone episode. I've seen it three times already and have listened to the songs many more times. It's always great when a cartoon can elicit such strong emotions.

I used to watch CN way more than I used to watch Nickolodeon, yet Avatar The Last Airbender was probably one of the best TV shows I've ever seen, it had such a great story. I was also a big fan of Genndy Tartakovksy's works, like Powerpuff Girls and Dexter's Lab, did you know that Luasarts named a species in Star Wars after him? They where called the Gen'Dai, Durge was probably the most famous from that species. So I made a list of some of my favorite cartoons. :classic:

Cartoon Newtwork:

Teen Titans

Kids Next Door

Old Clone Wars

Samurai Jack

Dexter's Laboratory

Powerpuff Girls

Justice League Unlimited

Nickelodeon:

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Jimmy Neutron

Old Spongebob Squarepants

Anime:

Old Yu-Ghi-Oh

Old Pokemon

Misc:

Batman: The Animated Series

My opinion about the MLP: FIM finale:

The ending seemed to be very rushed. It would be a lot better as 2-3 episodes.

And I think this episode greatly sums up this season- Very rushed, not well though (PLOT HOLES) with great animation and songs.

You can really feel Tara is no longer with the group. :/

And I was disapointed how new Twilight looks. I hoped it will grow and look more like Luna or something... That Discord was not even mentioned (IT COULD HELP! )

I don't think making it a two-parter would have helped. Overall while it went by very quickly, I felt it also moved quite smoothly, whereas making it longer could make it seem to move in fits and starts. And a two-parter would have to be divided evenly so each episode could tell a somewhat cohesive story (even if to get both the start of the conflict and the resolution of the conflict you have to see both episodes). Since a major complaint seems to be that there wasn't enough time to explain everything about Twilight's transformation, which would presumably happen in the second part, that means the second part could easily become bogged-down with exposition. Perhaps Twilight's transformation could be put in the first part and her coronation (including whatever anxieties she has about this change) could be put in the second, but then I feel like the second part would feel quite underwhelming, but then the second episode would have little to do with the first episode's friendship lesson, destroying the cohesiveness of the two parts.

I've heard someone suggest that a TV movie might suit this a lot better than a single episode, and I agree that would work better than a two-parter, though I'm not familiar with too many examples of TV movies that feature plot developments (don't look at me that way, I mean in the LITERARY sense) so essential to the overarching storyline of the show.

Aslo, Tara? Don't you mean Lauren?

My favourite cartoons and anime are the following shows:

1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (all versions): my favourite characters are the Ninja Turtles themselves Leatherhead (all versions) and Mondo Gecko (from the 1987-1996 version));

2. Legends of Chima (TV series): my favourite characters are not only Cragger, Crominus and Crunket, but they also include Laval, LaGravis, Leonidas, Longtooth, Lennox, Gorzan and Rhogon (he's funny to me), but I hate Crooler, Worriz (they have betrayed both Laval AND Cragger in some way or another, if you watch the first two episodes of the show very carefully there) and even Rawzom and Razar, but the rest of the charcters, especially if they are not in the Crocodile, Lion, Rhinoceros or Gorilla Tribes are just kind of 'meh!' to me;

3. Exreme Dinosaurs: my favourite characters are T-Bone, Stagz, Spittor, Bad Rap and Haxx;

4. Dinosaucers: my favourite characters are Allo, Demetro, Steggo, Ghengis Rex, Pelesio, Quackpot and Ankylo (the last two are funny to me);

5. Kung Fu Dino Posse: my favourite characters are the Tyrannosaurus Rex and Stegasaurus half-human,

half-dinosaur heros, and Skor and his younger brother of the half-human, half-dinosaur (velociraptor) villains (I have seen only one and a half episodes of this show, so even though I really like this show, I don't remember all the names of the characters);

6. Donkey Kong Country (TV series): my favourite characters are Donkey Kong, Funkey Kong, Diddy Kong and all of the Kremlings, obivously (they are half-human, half-crocodlies, in case you didn't know this);

7. Beast Wars: Transformers (Beasties: Transformers in Canada, where it was produced): my favourite characters are Dinobot, Rhinox, Optimus Primal, Megatron and Quickstrike (in no paricular order of preferrence);

8. Transformers (Generation 1): my favourite characters are the Dinobots, especially Grimlock, and the Terracons;

9. Yu-Gi-Oh!: my favourite characters are Yugi, Yami Yigi, Joey, Bakura, Yami Bakura, Mokuba Kaiva, Tristan

and Yugi and Yami Yugi's MAIN female friend (who helps them in Duelist Kingdom against Pegasus, for example, but I forgot her name);

10. Dragonball Z: my favourite charcters are Gohan and Goku;

11. Dinozaurs (an anime): my favourite characters are the (heroic) dinosaurs and the (villainous) dragons (I forgot their names); and

12. Street Sharks: my favourite characters are the Street Sharks themselves and the Dino Vengers (both are good characters).

You really like reptiles, don't you. :tongue:

Yes, I really like reptiles, and many of them look cute to me (in an fierce-looking sort of way for the carnivorous ones with sharp teeth, and just plain cute for Yoshi in the Super Mario Bros. franchaise, who looks and sounds just plain cute in the video games, especially in Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 7). I've been liking reptiles ever since when the Beast Wars: Transformers (Beasties: Transformers in Canada) TV series first came out on TV, when I first saw Dinobot and Megatron in their Beast Modes, way back in the middle of August of 1996.

I'm sorry for the double post; however, I think you can watch at least some of the new TMNT cartoons on www.YTV.com, in Canada, but I'm not sure if you can view them in Hong Kong, China, so can anyone find out about this? :look:
