I am less ok with this than I am with the knowledge that if anything has a fandom there is porn of it... Plus design=really poor I have come a cross a few anime or disney styled ones that look better. Quote

Aanchir Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 I'm looking forward to Equestria Girls. To be honest I find the amount of criticism it's gotten quite sad... but then again, having been an AFOL, a brony, and an A:TLA fan, I'm kind of used to fans being unpleasable. I posted a journal of my reactions to the drama over here. In general, I'm optimistic. I love the character designs (they kind of remind me of Lauren Faust's Galaxy Girls, plus a bit of anime influence), it's got some amazing creative talent behind it, and of course I'm not so detached from reality that I think selling toys and telling good stories are mutually exclusive. Plus, with the kind of budget it's likely to have as a movie, I'm expecting some really stellar music and animation. Overall, part of me wants to be skeptical. Part of me knows this is a grand, experimental undertaking that could go horribly wrong with a given combination of factors. But frankly, after seeing fans obsess over all kinds of supposed "disasters" that ended up meeting or exceeding the quality of the work they were supposed to be ruining, and after seeing heavy hints that this will be the same old song and dance once more, I am reminded that when you put stellar creative minds in charge of something, betting on the armchair storytelling experts who insist they can't succeed is a losing game. And yes, those stellar creative minds include the toy designers and marketers at the nebulous "Hasbro" the brony community has always been so quick to condemn. Quote
Oky Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Don't get me wrong, I'm not critical about EqG because I think it's bad or that it ruins "Faust's vision" or the franchise or anything like that. I don't have a problem with the designs either. Sure there are better fan arts out there, but these do a good job at staying within the style of the show. It just seems like a very cliche high school drama from what I have seen (even the song used in the trailer sounds like a very generic pop song), and that's just not my cup of tea. Plus, as I said before, I'm not a fan of the concept of turning the ponies into humans since that kinda takes the magic out of their character - in Twilight's case literally. I just don't see the appeal. Then again, everything that can be said against this movie is stuff that every brony would have said about MLP:FiM before they watched it, so who knows, maybe the creators can work their magic again for this genre. It is definitely worth checking out, I'm just lowering my expectations because I just can't see myself enjoying a high school drama, but hopefully I'm wrong. At the very least it will be interesting to see how the whole stolen crown plot fits into this and who the villain is. Quote

At the very least it will be interesting to see how the whole stolen crown plot fits into this and who the villain is. It was confirmed on Twitter that the song in the trailer isn't anywhere in the movie itself, so it probably IS a generic pop song. Or maybe it's in the credits. I dunno. Personally, here's a theory that's been bouncing around in my brain. There are definitely some conspicuous magical effects at one point in the trailer, and additionally the clips in the trailer use mostly-human versions of the characters (well, multicolored humans) versus the ones with pony ears, cutie mark facial tattoos, long hair, and pegasus wings from the stock art. But that stock art doesn't seem like concept art to me — it looks like fully-realized promotional art. My guess is that the climax of the movie involves the girls somehow unlocking these forms — let's call them "magic forms" for simplicity's sake. Any ongoing series after the fact will let the characters switch between their "magic forms" and "human forms" at will, and the series will occupy a sort of a Sailor-Moon–type "magical girl" genre, or at least dabble in that genre, from that point forward. Not sure if "superheroes-by-night, high-schoolers-by-day" is any more bearable than "generic high school drama". It's certainly no less cliche, as high school subplots are common to cartoons with youth protagonists. But it would explain why there are two distinct sets of character designs, one which is used in the clips we've seen and one that will probably be used as promotional art for the toyline whenever that happens. Some of the creators have hinted on Twitter that the more pony-influenced character designs will have some significance, so it's certainly not a case of Hasbro simply veering radically off-model. That's just my theory, though. As for the villain... The villain, as far as I can tell, is Sunset Shimmer, whose FiM toy revealed at Toy Fair describes her as "a former student of Princess Celestia's". Her name, role, and cutie mark set her up as a foil to Twilight Sparkle, and the trailer sets her up as a competitor for the fall formal dance thingy crown, a.k.a. the crown Twilight Sparkle lost. Perhaps she got trapped in the magic mirror once and needs the crown to escape? Regardless I'm pretty sure that's her in the center of the giant magical green column at one point in the trailer, so she's definitely more than the bratty "mean girl" she seems. On a side note, anyone planning to customize some LEGO Friends mini-dolls into Equestria Girls characters? Edited May 15, 2013 by Aanchir Quote
Tanma Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Anyone want to talk about Avengers Assemble? They are releasing more adds now. Its just, the more and more I hear about it the more I dread it. Reason number one is my avatar. Quote
just2good Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 Legend of Korra is coming back in September! Quote
just2good Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 {pic} Favorite show. It's cheesy but I loved the first three series of Yugioh. Well, 5Ds was kinda serious at parts, and GX was at the end. I LOVE the TCG though, I still play it (competitively) today. Quote
Spider-Man Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Legend of Korra is coming back in September! I think I just heard Oky cry for joy! Quote
kermit Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 I have always loved the adventures of the galaxy rangers tv cartoon and I think that very good sets can be rendered into lego form. It would be a combination of western and star wars themes with bunch of cool star ships and aliens. Quote
Oky Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 I think I just heard Oky cry for joy! Indeed I did! That trailer was great! It's about time Korra returned, especially since Futurama and Transformers: Prime, the only good cartoons left on TV, will be cancelled by then. Speaking of which, Transformers seems to be getting better with every episode! The new Optimus is awesome, and Soundwave is easily my favorite Transformer now. It will be sad to see this show go, but at least it seems like it will end on a very high note. New cartoons like Avengers Assemble and Beware the Batman aren't bad, but certainly not great either. I actually don't get the hate towards AA. Sure, it's not as good as EMH, but it's better than, say, Ultimate Spider-Man. As for Batman, it's not quite as dark as I would like it to be. They really seem to have toned down Professor Pyg and Mr. Toad. If this is going to be the main villain of the show, I can't see it being very good. And as many have feared, they completely ruined Alfred. He looks and sounds like Lex Luthor. WTF? Also, I preferred the silent Katana from B:TBATB, but if she is supposed to be Bats' new sidekick, I can see how that would be a problem. In addition, the visual style looks too "clean" for a Batman show (although it does remind me of The Incredibles a lot), and the first episode just wasn't very interesting as it didn't do much besides introduce the characters. We'll have to see if it gets better in the next episodes, but so far I'm not impressed. Quote

Simon He gets banned for "marking cards" from his opponent's deck when it's Prophecy and there's no point in marking cards when they'll search everything. Then there's Verz, DRoolers, Prophecy and the stupid Chicken import getting hyped at $80. Quote
Aanchir Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 (edited) Legend of Korra is coming back in September! I'm very excited! My brother and I recently got Book 1 on DVD and watched it from beginning to end with our mom over the course of the past two weeks. We also got the Book 1 soundtrack on Amazon. Did you know that if you buy a physical CD on Amazon and they have the music on it available digitally as well, you get to download a DRM-free copy of that music as soon as you finish making your order? I didn't until last night, and it was quite a treat since I was thinking buying a physical copy would mean I would have to wait to listen to it. We pre-ordered the Book 1 art book in the same transaction and I look forward to getting to read that. The Book 2 trailer is pretty incredible, and it looks like it's going to have a VERY different feel from Book 1 in a lot of ways. Book 1 felt very grounded in many respects, whereas Book 2 seems like it's going to be much more fantastic and mysterious. It is neat to have a book that will involve the Spirit World to such a great extent since in Avatar: The Last Airbender we only got to see it in short stretches, and very rarely at that. I'm excited to hear about My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic at Comic-Con as well. Sadly Ninjago doesn't seem to have much of a presence there this year, so I'm not sure when we'll get a trailer or release date for the next season, but it's supposed to be premiering towards the end of this year. I'm not a fan of Spellbooks or Dragon Rulers. I run a fun/competitive Agents deck. I didn't know Chicken is hyped at $80! I made a good profit off of the hype of Number 74. The Number Hunters pack was way over-hyped itself. I'm hoping Spellbooks, Super Rejuvenation, and Big Eye get hit this September. And yes, this is kinda anime discussion. Quote

Spellbooks are another heavily supported manga archetype that doesn't appear in the anime. I'm thinking the fifth anime will come in April for Japan... they usually last three years (the last two did), restarting on the April/August packs (not necessarily GX, though). (I miss Wasp so much) I'm sure it has some good points and I am probably being too hard on it, but every time I try to watch it I end up angry. Beware the Batman kind of weirded me out with Alfred, he looked not much older than Bruce to me. I caught some of the second episode today, I didn't think they handled the non-neutrotypicals well. But hey, I'm close to that situation so I have a bias. Transformers Prime will definitely be missed, I think it is the second longest Transformers show now, after G1. Soundwave easily was my favorite as well, even before that great moment in the season 1 finale. (though that explained why Starscream was always cautious around him) Its a pity to see it go, but supposedly the 2014 Transformers series might be a sequel show. This is just rumors, but I'm still hoping for adult versions of the kids. Quote
Oky Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Yeah, supposedly something will happen in the Beast Hunters finale that will "change the Transformers universe forever" which implies that the next Transformers series will have some kind of connection to this show. My personal favorite Soundwave moment was when he effortlessly got rid of Airachnid and her army. That was just badass. Quote
Tanma Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Yeah, I remember the first time he bridged an enemy, Arcee never saw it coming. I just love it when he does it, its like they aren't even worth his time. The one issue I had with Soundwave is when he spoke in his own voice during Minus One, personally I felt like that should have been saved for if Megatron was victorious or some other epic moment. It seemed kind of wasted there, especially since he never spoke in the first two seasons of the show. Does that make sense? Quote
Oky Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 I kinda know what you mean, but I disagree. I thought it added to the creepiness of that scene nicely. Also: Super Ponies! Me likey. EqD has some info on Season 4. Everything sounds promising so far! Quote

Oky Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Watched Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox yesterday. Awesome movie! I've been looking forward to this one for a while now and it did not disappoint! It was very dark, violent, and intense! Probably the grittiest animated DC film to date, so don't watch this with children or if you don't like the dark turn that comic book movies have been taking lately. However, if you are an adult DC fan who doesn't mind seeing your favorite heroes brutally kill each other, definitely check it out! The story was a bit choppy and far fetched, but other than that it was good. Overall another great job by DC. I wonder why Marvel can never make such good animated movies. This movie made me want the Flash minifig even more now. Quote
