PenPlays Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 I just started watching Fairy Tail and I'm thoroughly enjoying it! Interesting concept of a world where magic users are as common as coffee drinkers (so to speak). Quote
Fred Daniel Yam Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 I just watched the first 5 episodes of Beware the Batman and I've gotta say, I was pleasantly suprised. I like how they chose the Earth-1 route for Alfred and focused more on the detective work more than the fighting for Batman. Voice acting was decent and noone really seemed unsuitable for their role. Kintobor Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 I kinda know what you mean, but I disagree. I thought it added to the creepiness of that scene nicely. Also: Super Ponies! Me likey. EqD has some info on Season 4. Everything sounds promising so far! Yeah, I'm excited! I'm currently sitting through Ouran High School Host Club. What an absurd show! I'm really loving it! PenPlays Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 (edited) Anyone else here enjoy Sonic Satam? SatAM? That series sparked one of the best comic books I have ever read, and continue to read, for that matter (or was it vise versa?). That show has earned my respect as the best show Sonic the Hedgehog has to offer, and I find myself regretting that that show ended when it did! Sonic X comes in at a close second, only because of its heavy human interaction. Sonic Underground was a very different show for Sonic, as it was an attempt to show off Sonic's Family (which later goes unacknowledged by future writers for the shows and games). AoStH (Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog) was too much of a wacky '90s cartoon for me to fully enjoy it, but most of the main characters live on in the comic books which shows that it had far better potential than the previous two shows I mentioned. I know you were just talking about SatAM, but you really can't talk about one Sonic the Hedgehog Cartoon without talking about the others . EDIT: Nice username by the way! Have any of you watched that new anime webseries called RWBY? It has some major potential and I expect great things to come. You can find the amazing trailers and the first five episodes here. Sonic X wasn't my cup of tea, because of the heavy human interactions! SatAM to me just feels the most developed and complete, and yes, despite the comic being released before the show, it is based on the concepts the show started. That cliffhanger still ticks me off! I find it ironic when a show picks up after it was canceled, like SWAT Kats and Invader Zim. Thanks! It was the first thing that popped into my head for a username without numbers on the end, and it seems to have worked out rather well! On the topic of ponies, anyone else here see Equestria Girls? just2good Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 (edited) On the topic of ponies, anyone else here see Equestria Girls? Thoughts? I saw it in June... Saw My Little Pony: Equestria Girls today on YouTube. IMHO, it was pretty rushed and full of cheap references to bring back the audience. Didn't like it at all, especially since it went against some of the aspects of MLP:FiM. I can't fail it as the animation was great (though some of the designs were lacking), as goes for the voice work and even one of the songs. D. Edited August 17, 2013 by just2good Quote
Kintobor Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 I actually didn't mind it. I went in expecting nothing, and came out feeling it was decent enough to give a passing grade. Of course, it all opinion based, so what I thought was good and what you thought was terrible are two completely different things. I will admit, the ending was a little forced, but that's about it. Animation was good, but I'm not sure if it was theatrical release quality. In my book it gets a solid 6.5-7/10. It was entertaining, and at the end of the day, that's why I go to see a movie: to be entertained, and the film did just that. And end credits Derpy. Quote

Oky Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Anyone else here enjoy Sonic Satam? Who doesn't enjoy Sonic SatAM? I recently watched it on Netflix and I can definitely see why so many people cherish it so much. It's an overall well made show with great characters and a good story. It certainly had its flaws *coughAntoineCough* but no other Sonic show and few other cartoons can touch it. I also enjoyed Sonic Underground. While it's obviously inferior to SatAM, it had a good story, some good characters, and some of the music wasn't bad either. Too bad the main plot arc never got resolved. I wasn't a fan of Sonic X due to the Japanese animation and the Earth setting, but maybe I need to give it a second try. And AoStH was just silly. I just watched the first 5 episodes of Beware the Batman and I've gotta say, I was pleasantly suprised. I like how they chose the Earth-1 route for Alfred and focused more on the detective work more than the fighting for Batman. Voice acting was decent and noone really seemed unsuitable for their role. Hopefully it gets better Yeah, the first episode was a bit iffy, but the others are pretty good. The tone of the show is pretty close to BTAS and the fact that they use obscure villains makes the episodes unpredictable. I like Magpie and Anarky and I'm curious to see what they'll do with Ra's. The only thing that still bugs me is Alfred's appearance and voice. He looks nothing like Alfred and his accent sounds more Australian than British, but maybe it's just me. I'm also enjoying Avengers Assemble. It's no EMH, but it still has the humor and action you'd expect from an Avengers show, plus some pretty good animation. I think all the people complaining about this show are just still butt-hurt about EMH. Hulk and the Agents of SMASH on the other hand... ugh. I can agree with any criticism made towards this show. I usually like Seth Green, but man is he annoying in this! And did anyone watch Phineas & Ferb: Mission Marvel? I thought it was pretty good. I liked all the references to Marvel movies like Howard the Duck, and MODOK meeting the giant floating baby head was hilarious. The songs were just okay though and were mostly just pointless filler. Also, Phineas blowing off on Candace like that seemed very out of character to me. But other than that, it was quite entertaining. Just one question: Where the heck was Cap? They didn't even acknowledge him, which seemed odd considering Red Skull was the main villain. Oh well. Quote
Tanma Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 (edited) See I can't get into assemble for a number of reasons. One, Wasp isn't there, this is very important. Honestly I got into comics because of her, so I still am very annoyed. I know I might be butt hurt, but the truth is she is tied for my favorite superhero. I can't bring myself to care much about this cast, I mean normally I care about Bruce Banner but he doesn't even seem to exist in assemble. In EMH he didn't appear often, but he did appear. I like the Hulk too, but I just am not feeling interested in him here. And past the Hulk no one really matters to me in the cast. Plus let's be honest, I can't find myself respecting Falcon as a character as much as Black Panther. And I know they claimed the two shows are in continuity, but it just doesn't fit. The character developments are too set back to square one, not to mention Falcon. And Wasp wouldn't quit, so either it's ooc or she's dead. Which bums me out either way. So either the writers just didn't care about fact checking, or they lied. Also the Quinjet from what I saw looks totally cluttered, which along with other art choices don't endear the show to me. I have more issues with it, buts it's the morning and I'm still tired. Edited August 18, 2013 by Tanma Quote
Oky Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Okay, I agree with most of your complaints there, except I'm not as obsessed with Wasp as you, but those all seem very nitpicky. True, Falcon is not nearly as cool as Panther and it's odd how they're completely ignoring the Banner side of Hulk, but I guess it's because Hulk is a hundred times more marketable than Banner. He never turns into Banner in any of the other Marvel Universe shows either. It looks like Disney just said: "He's big, he's green, and he smashes. That's all kids care about, so that's what we'll give them." But while I do enjoy seeing Banner, I can live with it. And the claim that AA is a continuation of A:EMH was obviously just something they said to appease the fans. That didn't make sense ever since they announced that Falcon would be much younger in this show. Which begs to question: What continuity is it set in then? The Avengers keep referring to an earlier time when they were Avengers, but then split up because they didn't get along or something. When did this happen? It's very confusing and it's the same issue everyone had with the TMNT movie from 2007. Quote
Tanma Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 (edited) Yeah I am a little Wasp obsessed, I tend to latch on to certain characters and dive into them. She is currently tied for my favorite superhero with Ultimate Jessica Drew and Kitty Pryde*. (Kitty only under certain writers) But you will not believe how many of the fan fictions I write are about EMH Wasp. It isn't just that Panther is cooler, but he is his own person. He has his own rogues, an origin story, a nation, and he got his powers through his own resources. Falcon in AA just was given a suit by Tony Stark, at least from what I can tell. See the thing is I think the Hulk is more marketable with young kids, but as someone who suffered with depression Banner was my favorite part of the MCU Avengers movie. I can get the logic, but it makes the Hulk flat and boring, just an angry brute. Currently the wiki refers to AA's universe as Earth-TN123, the same universe as Ultimate Spider-Man and Hulk and the Agents of Smash. Avengers: EMH and Wolverine and the X-Men Cartoon are in Earth-8096, with the apocolpytic future seen in WatXM as Earth-80920. I love the infinite multiverse of Marvel. PenPlays Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 Sorry for not finding the original source, but according to this post on tfw2005, those of us in North America will be getting quite a collection of 2000's Hasbro classics (re-)released on DVD! Here is a mirror of the press release featured in the link above: Shout! Factory and Hasbro Studios have announced a new distribution agreement to bring a library of nine animated adventure movie and pop culture television hits to the home entertainment marketplace in the U.S and Canada. This multi-year, multi-property alliance provides Shout! Factory exclusive rights to My Little Pony animated family adventures My Little Pony: The Princess Promenade, My Little Pony: A Very Minty Christmas, My Little Pony: Runaway Rainbow, My Little Pony: Dancing in the Clouds, My Little Pony: Friends are Never Far Away. The deal also includes TV properties Transformers Animated (2007-2009 TV series), Transformers: Armada (2002 TV series), Transformers: Energon (2004 TV series), and Transformers: Cybertron (2005 TV series). I'm not much of a brony myself, and I have been dying to get a complete collection of the Unicron Trilogy, but Transformers Animated stands out as the biggie here, for me. This may just be the release of the third season of TFA that we Transformer fans have been waiting for! I for one am ecstatic and I cannot wait for some more information. Quote
Oky Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Nick just released part one of a young Mako/Bolin miniseries for us Legend of Korra fans, to hold us over! Rejoice! Just watched all three parts. It's pretty neat, as is the Pai Sho game (which I haven't been able to play yet somehow ). And yeah, the animation does seem rather wind-wakery. On the topic of ponies, anyone else here see Equestria Girls? Thoughts? Just watched it last night and I thought it was okay. Sure, it was very gimmicky, with lots of stuff for Hasbro to make toys out of and lots of fan service, but I think they handled the story fairly well. It definitely wasn't as bad as many bronies made it out to be and there are much worse high school dramas out there. In fact, they seemed to focus more on the fish-out-of-water aspect of it than the high school aspect. For the most part it felt like a two-part MLP:FIM episode, just in a different setting, so if you like the show, you'll probably like this movie too. I liked the Equestria Girls song, although the Katy Perry parody is still better and should have been in the movie in my opinion. The rest were just okay. Overall, as you said yourself, it was entertaining enough. I'm not much of a brony myself, and I have been dying to get a complete collection of the Unicron Trilogy Well, if you were a brony, you'd probably be looking for the unicorn trilogy. Sorry, I couldn't resist. Quote

Can you believe it took till the end of the first season of Transformers Prime for the franchise to make a unicorn/Unicron joke? That's like twenty five years. Thank you Miko, for fixing that terrible error. Speaking of Prime, I did not see that ending coming. Really excited for that tv movie. Quote
Aanchir Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 I got Equestria Girls yesterday and look forward to seeing it. I've heard great things about it from a lot of people I consider trustworthy, and the concept wasn't that off-putting for me to begin with, so I'm enthusiastic. It'll probably be a great way for me to get my My Little Pony fix until Season Four premieres. Overall, I just wish the Equestria Girls toys were anywhere near as good as the movie seems to be. Their excessive makeup and fairly generic outfits were a huge disappointment to me, considering how great the character designs in the movie are. I appreciate some aspects of the toy designs (the fact that their manes are already slightly styled to fit the characters is great and something I kind of wish they'd do with the regular My Little Pony toys), but overall they feel quite disappointing considering how much potential the Equestria Girls brand could have had. Aanchir Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 So I saw Equestria Girls on Sunday. Granted, I saw the syndicated version which means some scenes were left out. I still need to get around to watching it again on DVD so I can experience the film in its entirety. But here are my thoughts: Visually, the film was amazing. To be fair, this is what we've come to expect of the series as a whole, so it's not like it's setting a new standard for My Little Pony animation and cinematography. But the Equestria Girls character designs, the set designs at Canterlot High and the Crystal Empire, and all of the visual effects were very refined and simply fun to take in. The one place where we DID see some radically different animation was the opening credits, which were pretty impressive: I have a screenshot from those as my desktop wallpaper currently. The music was excellent, even if it had a decidedly different flavor than that in the series proper. The songs were quite catchy and helped move the story forward. I do feel like the choreography for the dance sequences went above and beyond what I was expecting. Perhaps the use of lanky human models made it easier for the animators to make the movements fluid and dynamic, almost like watching a gymnastic act. Then again, I'm always impressed with good dance choreography. The story was compelling and believable, but I'd be lying if I said it was flawless. One complaint I've read, which I wholeheartedly agree with, is that Flash Sentry's role was almost superfluous, and as a character he was underutilized. Additionally, it was a little bit hard to tell towards the end how sympathetic Sunset Shimmer was supposed to be. I think the writers could have killed two birds with one stone there if they had him provide some background info on her (he IS established to be her ex-boyfriend, after all). I am interested in the possibility that perhaps Sunset Shimmer was just as awkward as Twilight Sparkle when she first entered the human world, and that without the ability to make friends she was forced to claw her way to the top with the same type of vicious schemes she used against Twilight Sparkle and her friends. This would have made her easier for Twilight and the audience to relate to, and would have made her eventual forgiveness a little easier to swallow. I'm not sure I would have been as happy with that resolution if I had not already formulated this idea during earlier scenes. I was pleased that everyone acted in-character in the movie. I'd heard some criticisms of the way Snips and Snails were portrayed, but I think it makes a lot of sense. Their key character trait is being somewhat dull-witted and impressionable, and it's not really any surprise that Sunset Shimmer could manipulate them into following her without them even being entirely sure what was going on. The "culture shock" jokes were amusing but not excessive. Spike's translation into a talking dog worked great by allowing him to tag along with Twilight and provide guidance just as easily as he could when she was a pony and he was a dragon. I've already started experimenting digitally with the idea of making custom Equestria Girls mini-dolls, but I've got a long way to go. It doesn't help that there don't exist any templates for custom mini-doll decorations, so I'd probably have to make any custom decorations from scratch. But at least it won't require any brushing of plastic manes. Quote

I think it could have been really cool. ( Sigh ) Quote
