Toa of Gallifrey Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Oh, I have a list. I was at work at the time and couldn't access it. And I'm sure you know, but Showa Genroku is currently airing. You're binge watching will eventually catch up to as it airs. Also, first episode was a twofer. 40-some minutes. I also feel I should warn you that the show probably isn't for everyone. But if you enjoy more laid-back anime and realistic characters and interactions and drama, then you should enjoy it. I'd really like to hear your opinion! Also, other shows I'm watching are Phantom Myriad Colors World (or whatever). I'm just sorta... Watching it. Taking it at face-value. Yeah, fanservice. Yeah, near-non-existent plot. But I don't really care. I've accepted it and am enjoying it as it is. Art, music, and animation are aces, though. And Konosuba. Which is actually pretty entertaining once you get past the mediocre art/animation. Pretty sure that covers everything I'm watching this season. Read through some of your list... Divine Gate... Ergh. Biggest disappointment. Stuck around through episode... 6 I think? Then I dropped it. Which is sad because I liked the premise and art style (and that OP, man!), but the show went absolutely nowhere. I just... Argh! Yeah I know Showa is airing. I'm very much looking forward to it based on what you said! I'll definitely post my impressions here. Yeah, Divine Gate's OP is beast. It, Dagashi Kashi's and Ajin's stood out to me the most this season. Quote

Biggest disappointment. Stuck around through episode... 6 I think? Then I dropped it. Which is sad because I liked the premise and art style (and that OP, man!), but the show went absolutely nowhere. I just... Argh! I finally had some time to pick up Shouwa Genroku. Since I was already picking that up, I decided to also pick up Kono Subarashii which I kinda wanted to pick up a couple weeks ago but decided against it as I already had enough. Being the irresponsible watcher that I am, I threw caution to the wind and picked up both. So far, seen the first 3 episodes of both so this is more first impressions than anything. Shouwa Genroku - Wow, all I can say is wow. This is so different from any other anime I've ever seen, I love it! I wasn't familiar with rakugo before so I paused the first episode early on to quickly google it and I was very intrigued. I love theater so I was able to dive into the first episode looking forward to the rakugo, which I thought to be a brilliant concept. Apart from the brilliant rakugo scenes in the first episode, what really stood out to me was the storytelling in the flashback in the second and third episode. Only Boku Dake ga Inai Machi and this show have managed to get me so invested in their characters this season. Overall, I'm in love. I can't say where I rank it yet. Based on these 3 episodes, I put it above Ajin but a cut below ERASED. Only by the time both shows are over will I be able to determine which I thought was better. Can't wait to keep going! Kono Subarashii - Really enjoying this one, it's hilarious. I think the art and animation are okay. The animation isn't anything above what is to be expected but the art looks good to me, especially the character designs. The episodes all have at least one good laugh out loud moment and this is something I can look forward to watching on Monday, as the other comedy anime this season that I look forward to (Dagashi Kashi and Galko-chan) are on Fridays. EDIT: Just realized these two are done by Studio DEEN. Damn, I would've thought Genroku in particular was done by Madhouse. Good work, DEEN! Edited February 28, 2016 by Toa of Gallifrey Quote
Kalhiki Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 Glad to hear you enjoyed both! I may have said it before, but Showa Genroku is definitely one of my favorites this season. Like you said, it's different. A welcome breath of fresh air. And this article on anime news network made me realize that not only are the characters and story great, but the visuals are also impressive (I picked up on some while watching, but there were a few I didn't catch). Camera angles and even the music really set up the scene and mood. They also mentioned some of the director's other works in that article as well. I'm going to have to look those up and watch them sometime. Quote
Toa of Gallifrey Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 (edited) I'm very impressed, especially as it comes from Studio DEEN, infamous for such animation as in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni's first season and OVA and Pupa. I've heard the 2006 Fate/stay night series had some shoddy animation here and there as well but I haven't seen it myself. Now being caught up to both series, these would be my rankings for everything I'm watching this season. 1-Boku Dake ga Inai Machi 2-Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu 3-Ajin 4-Oshiete! Galko-chan 5-Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 6-Akagami no Shirayuki-hime 2nd Season 7-Hai to Gensou no Grimgar 8-Dagashi Kashi 9-Pokemon XY&Z 10-Bubuki Buranki 11-Dimension W 12-Shoujo-tachi wa Kouya wo Mezasu 13-Musaigen no Phantom World 14-Mahou Shoujo Nante Mouiidesukara 15-Divine Gate 16-Luck & Logic 17-Saijaku Muhai no Bahamut Edited February 29, 2016 by Toa of Gallifrey Quote
Kalhiki Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 (edited) I'm not even going to try and rate the shows I'm watching. But Erased and Showa Genroku definitely take top spots. I will say, I thoroughly enjoyed this week's episode of Bubuki Buranki. I laughed so hard at the American stereotype whose name escapes me. Purely from an enjoyment standpoint, this show definitely takes a position near the top. I'm so happy to hear it'll have 20-some episodes. EDIT: Forgot to mention the soundtrack. Really hope it gets released in the future. It's got some really catchy tunes. Edited February 29, 2016 by Kalhiki Quote
Toa of Gallifrey Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 (edited) While it was a pretty funny episode, I thought it meshed badly with the tone set by the last couple episodes and felt fillery/distracting, as I thought the next few episodes would be sorta an arc on Treasure Island. Since it's two cours I can excuse it, just feels a bit disorganized. It wasn't truly filler, but it took away from what seemed to be the main plot by adding something new coming out of nowhere. I also didn't really like how wacky expressions looked in 3DCG, I feel like the two don't mix well. Edited March 1, 2016 by Toa of Gallifrey Quote
Aanchir Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 The other day my brother and I started watching Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir. It's a lot of fun, if a bit formulaic at times. Unfortunately as soon as we got through the first twelve episodes on YouTube we learned that the show's presently on hiatus in the U.S., but the creators confirmed on Twitter that it's not pulled or cancelled, so that's good. Looking forward to more episodes! Now that Adventure Time is going to be getting a LEGO Ideas set, I really ought to stop putting off watching it. I've been meaning to for years now, but always manage to find some excuse not to. Quote
Toa of Gallifrey Posted April 2, 2016 Posted April 2, 2016 (edited) Now that all but two of the shows for the Winter 2016 anime season that I watched are over, I can give more finalized (brief) thoughts on them. (ordered from worst to best, the two unfinished ones are asterisked) Winter 2016 18) Saijaku Muhai no Bahamut - Kicking off at the bottom is Bahamut (Undefeated Bahamut Chronicle), thoroughly average at first and got more cliched and boring as it went on. Just a generic ecchi mecha harem Infinite Stratos/The Asterisk War clone. I will not be following this one for a second season if it gets announced. 17) Divine Gate - Such a shame that this one got so bad, it was very promising at first but went nowhere fast. After some half-hearted attempts at being deep and edgy, it completely failed at even being loldeep or loledgy. Like Bahamut, I won't be following this for a potential 2nd season. 16) Luck & Logic - Also generic and dull oversaturated with underdeveloped characters, though points for some funny jokes here and there and some great music. I was hoping for this one to be at least rather interesting, being an original series, but alas twas not to be. 15) Mahou Shoujo Nantemouiidesukara. - (I've Had Enough of Being a Magical Girl) Though rather average and definitely suffering from being only 3 minutes long, it was significantly more enjoyable than the previous 3 series and rather funny when it poked fun at common mahou shoujo tropes. Not exactly one of the greats but certainly not as bad as Bahamut, Divine Gate and Luck & Logic. 14) Bubuki Buranki - Lots of potential at first, dwindled in the middle and had a rather messy midseries finale. I think it was a bad choice to wait for the next cour to show the MC's sister, I think it was a bad choice to bring in the American and Russian bubuki users. It would've been a much tighter and more interesting series if it focused more on getting to Treasure Island and then Reoko and the MC's mom's conflict, as well as focusing on developing the villains a bit more. The CG looked good for the most part but the exagerated expressions I'll watch the 2nd cour when it comes out but it definitely left me a bit disappointed. 13) Musaigen no Phantom Word - Phantom World (Myriad Colors Phantom World) was rather peculiar. It had a very interesting premise that was sadly underutilized for most of the series. The good episodes were very good but the bad episodes were very bad. It was a mixed bag that I'm glad to have seen and is definitely not worthy of the hate it gets. It had beautiful KyoAni visuals but not the meat to back it up, but it was still more enjoyable than others. *12) Pokemon XY&Z - Still ongoing but it's been pretty good thus far. The villainous team has been handled excellently, the integration with the Mega Evolution special has been handled decently and Serena's had the focus when it comes to non-Flare episodes so far, which I'm happy with. As ever, I'd like less filler but it's been rather enjoyable so far. I'm looking forward to the Snowbelle Gym battle and the eventual climax of the Flare arc. 11) Dimension W - Very interesting series that, oddly for me, I think would've been better as an episodic series. It had lots of potential with its setting and characters but felt bogged down by a messy endgame plot and oversaturation of characters. It felt a bit like Bubuki Buranki at times but I felt this was overall better handled. I could go for a second season but it's not really something I care about. 10) Shoujo-tachi wa Kouya wo Mesazu - (Girls Beyond the Wasteland) I thought it'd be pretty generic and at times it was but it was mostly interesting throughout. The characters were never dull and the story got more exciting as the series went on. It ultimately was nothing special but it was a fun ride and I'm looking forward to the OVA. 9) Dagashi Kashi - Started off great and hilarious and ended ok but still hilarious. There wasn't enough focus on Hotaro or You, who were easily the funniest characters, and Saya had too much focus but it was still ultimately a lot of fun. It could get a bit stale here and there but funny enough to carry through. 8) Akagami no Shirayuki-hime 2nd Season - (Snow White with the Red Hair 2nd Season) Definitely better than the first season. Nothing incredibly special but very good at what it was, a fun relaxing romantic shoujo series. The characters were all likeable, Studio Bones did a great job with the animation and the sound was spectacular. I really hope it gets another season, though I don't think it will. 7) Hai to Gensou no Grimgar - (Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash) While it was very enjoyable throughout and overall one of the better series this season, it still failed to address the genesis of the story, where the kids came from and why are they in a video game world? I take it the light novels reveal it later but leaving the series incomplete without certainty of a second season isn't a good thing to do. Still, it was a great series. The art was great throughout, the characters were very interesting and well developed and the final 2 episodes were incredibly well done. I really, really hope it gets a second season. 6) Ojisan to Marshmallow - (Ojisan and Marshmallow) I picked this one up later, which is why it wasn't on my posts before on this thread. It was a great ride with lots of humor and a surprisingly good amount of feels for such a short show. I felt a bit disappointed with the direction episodes 11 and 12 took but it was still a great show for its length, accomplishing much more than many longer series did. I felt very surprised and for that I really loved this one. 5) Oshiete! Galko-chan - (Please tell me! Galko-chan) Another hidden gem, hilarious throughout and with surprisingly complex characters. It was fanservice-y to an enjoyable amount and not intrusively. Very enjoyable to watch and a shame that it's done. Season 2 for this one, please! 4) Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! - (KonoSuba: God's Blessing on this Wonderful World!) Yet another unlikely success story, coming from Studio DEEN. Hilarious throughout with jokes always having continuity later on, fun characters that go beyond expectations and admittedly sometimes somewhat weak visuals at times framed with a great soundtrack and amazing voice acting (special props to Kazuma!). I was very sad that it was only 10 episodes but I am very glad that season 2 was confirmed, I can only hope it gets a somewhat better budget! Can't wait for the OVA, too. *3) Ajin - Still unfinished so I can't speak for the ending but I'm really loving the direction it's going. It feels unique, the CG works for it pretty well and has a wonderful atmosphere and soundtrack. I don't expect the story to be resolved in the TV series but there's the OVA and movies to look forward to. 2) Boku Dake ga Inai Machi - (ERASED) My favorite until Rakugo overtook it, still very solid all the way through. A bit rushed towards the end but not to its detriment. It had very interesting characters and a compelling mystery which admittedly had a rather obvious culprit but it still worked. It may have had somewhat weak points here and there but it was one of the best series this season. 1) Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu - (Shouwa and Genroku Era Lover's Suicide Through Rakugo) A marvelous hidden gem that I wouldn't have discovered had it not been for Kalhiki on this thread. Definitely anime of the season for me with its well-crafted storyline and characters and surprisingly great visuals, especially coming off of Studio DEEN! The ending of the penultimate episode in particular was marvelous for being predictable yet still incredibly impactful when "it" happens. I am absolutely ecstatic that there will be a second season as not many people knew about it this season. Though it'll be very different due to all the flashbacks being (probably) over, I can't wait to see the development of the present day plot! On the flipside, Spring 2016 has begun and I've started 4 of the series so far. Spring 2016 JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 4: Diamond is Unbreakable - As an anime only watcher (so far), I didn't know what to expect and I am very pleased. I love Josuke and Jotaro's presence is welcome. The town of Morioh is excellently drawn and the soundtrack is wonderful. I can't wait to see where this goes and I can't wait to see all the new Stands! Uchuu Patrol Luluco - Didn't even need to check the credits to knew this was by Trigger. Wonderful and hilarious start for a short series and I can't wait to see more! It satisfies the craving I've had for more Kill la Kill. Hopefully Trigger can keep up the quality for both this and Kiznaiver! Mayoiga - A very interesting series for which I had no idea what to expect. I definitely wanna see where it's going with its wide variety of characters and suspenseful atmosphere. Ace Attorney - I've never played the games before so I wasn't sure what to expect but I'm digging it. It's as goofy as I was told the games are and the characters are very charming. I'm looking forward to seeing the cases to come! For non-seasonal series, I'm in the midst of watching Vampire Knight with my sister, which is fairly enjoyable, and Revolutionary Girl Utena on my own which I'm absolutely in love with. I had no idea what to expect from it and am loving its crazy style and heavy symbolism. At first I wasn't too into the fights but now I'm really enjoying them. The strobing effects for the Sword of Dios and the like are incredibly annoying, though. I wish it made less use of recycled animation but the Absolute Destiny Apocalypse sequence is incredibly enjoyable every time and so is the student council's elevator so I can deal with it. Kalhiki Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 Yeah, been meaning to do a short recap. Too lazy to give reviews of all the shows I watched last season, but here are a few: I will say Shouwa Genroku was the Anime of the Season for me. It was very well done and executed. So glad I decided to give it a shot especially considering I had no plans to watch it at first. So excited that it's getting a second season. Erased was pretty great. I'd put it at second favorite. Konosuba was fun. One of those shows that I grew to love as it went on. Also happy to hear a Season 2 is on its way. Bubuki Buranki, through all its faults in story-telling and character development, captured my heart (hah! No pun intended). I don't know why. I just really enjoyed it. Maybe because I could just shut my brain off and enjoy giant robots and people with weapons that turn into limbs of said giant robots beat each other up. And again, yay for season 2! (If all these sequels/continuations come out in the same season it's going to be like Winter 2016 part 2.) Dimension W... I have mixed feelings. I'm re-watching it dubbed on Toonami. For some reason, when I look back on the show, I realize how not-the-best it was. But re-watching it, I seem to still enjoy it. Like, I didn't enjoy it on the whole, but liked watching the episodes... It's weird. Definitely could have been better, I will say. And finally Osomatsu-san has concluded. And I'll just say it was one of the funniest things I've seen and I need more. Judging by its success, I easily see them coming out with another season. Of course, there were other shows I watched, but these are the standouts. I would comment on Snow White, but I'm watching the dub, and it's not over yet. But I'm enjoying it so far. And now off to the Spring 2016 season! I'll post more thoughts when it's well underway, and I've settled in to all I'm watching. I will say, though, that of all the shows this season that I've seen, Space Patrol Luluco is my favorite. Hiroyuki Imaishi is a treasure. Quote
Toa of Gallifrey Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 Luluco was incredibly enjoyable, it's my third as of first impressions right behind JoJo Part 4 and Re:Zero. Gonna watch Joker Game as soon as it's up, hopefully it's a good one! Quote
PenPlays Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 So I just got finished with Akame Ga Kill... (Spoiler tags are there for a reason, folks) They tried to take all of my feels, but they failed. Why? Because despite every character (excluding the titular character, Akame) being emotionally built up, each and every single character death was written in a way to make the person watching feel emotional loss. However, not enough was put into their development to really leave a mark. Keep in mind that this is supposed to be a story about assassins who know that they are putting their lives on the line for their work, yet they don't have a really strong reason ingrained into their story. So the reaction is more of an, "Oh... there she goes," as opposed to a "WHHHYYYY!!!" The latter is clearly what the writers were trying to do, but it fell flat. In fact, the only three characters (keep in mind that there are well over 15 secondary character deaths in this series) whose deaths left their mark were Mine, Esdeath, and Leone. This is because of their direct relationship to the main character Tatsumi. Speaking of Tatsumi, there should be an unsaid law that if the main character is to die in the end, it must be during the final battle! There was an entire episode without the main character (an entire episode with him dead, and the "true" final battle going on), in order to attempt making Akame the real reason the series exists to begin with. Sure the series has her name in it, but she certainly is not the main character, and trying to force that in the last episode is fruitless. Now, is Akame Ga Kill a bad series? Oh, heck no! The story as a whole is engaging, as well as some of the music. The battles are spectacular and... unrealistically bloody. Ever single card-holding villain in this show is absolutely despicable and their deaths are certainly satisfying due the watchers' love to hate those characters. I give it a 7/10: Entertaining to watch. Fun albeit underdeveloped characters. An ending that mixes climatic elements with lackluster execution. Watch it, though. It's enjoyable. Quote

I give it a 7/10: Entertaining to watch. Fun albeit underdeveloped characters. An ending that mixes climatic elements with lackluster execution. Watch it, though. It's enjoyable. AgK for me is an example of why studios should wait for a manga to finish before adapting. The series was going pretty good, with the exception of the inability to choose between a grim or light mood, until Lubbock's death, which is when they stopped following the manga (with the exception of an altered/skipped arc) because that's as far as it had gotten. While the manga is far from perfect either and they fixed a lot of the more cringy scenes (in particular 4th wall breaking jokes and the lack of inclusion of a character that was literally introduced, hyped up as having a really cool scythe teigu, and then unceremoniously killed by Akame before we found out who he was or what his teigu did, etc.) but by choosing to adapt the series when they did, they ended up condensing the entire Wild Hunt arc into a single fight between Lubbock and Syura and a redone version of his death, and removing a bunch of characters that I considered to be rather interesting in the manga and could really have been fleshed out in the anime. Then, they presumably wrote the ending based off the author's ending notes. I won't go into much detail with the changes as I feel anime should be able to work by itself and not necessarily because it's a 1-1 adaptation. I hadn't read the manga when I saw the anime anyway and didn't know the differences, but now having read the manga I can appreciate subtle things they changed but wish they had the time to adapt the Wild Hunt arc and do it justice, as well as having waited for the manga to finish so they could adapt the final arc appropriate (the manga isn't over yet but I believe it's on the final arc). Anyway, it was a good series in my opinion that just needed better direction and a less rushed ending. For the most part, the deaths felt fairly impactful for me. I felt shock when Sheele died, I felt sad when Bulat died, I felt very sad when Chelsea died, Lubbock I saw coming and at this point it was starting to lose its luster so I didn't really react, same goes for Mine. I did not expect Tatsumi to die so it was pretty shocking, and while Leone's death felt sad I felt it was kinda cheap. For the Jaegers, I greatly felt Bols' death but was rather indifferent towards Kurome and Esdeath. I suppose some were because I didn't expect them and not necessarily because of growing fond of the character due to their development (Chelsea and Bulat for example, I found the latter more enjoyable through flashbacks later on), though I applaud some of them, Sheele and Mine in particular. In the end, even though Akame didn't really do anything groundbreaking in terms of characters or plot, it was a fun series and I'm glad I saw it. I continue to eagerly read the manga and find out how it ends. Quote
Kalhiki Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 Well, I guess I'll give my thoughts on the anime I'm watching this season. I'm watching a lot, and I don't feel like discussing all of them. Highlights, though, include (in no particular order): Joker Game: Very interesting and intriguing. Curious to see where this'll go. Twin Star Exorcists: Has promise. Fun to watch. I enjoy it. Bungo Stray Dogs: Because who doesn't want to watch re-envisioned, famous Japanese authors duke it out with the supernatural? This show is crazy fun. I heard the comparison that it's like some weird mix of Noragami and Blood Blockade Battlefront, and that's not far off. Considering those are two of my favorite shows, I'm super stoked for this. And I hear a second season is confirmed! Concrete Revolutio- The Last Song: Season 2 of ConRev. Another show I'm super stoked about. Really got into the last season, and so far this season has been knocking things out of the park. Can't wait to see how this all ends. Kabaneri (sp?) of the Iron Fortress: aka Not Attack on Titan. Can't say much 'cuz the second episode was delayed to to a quake in Japan (stay strong!), but so far it's looking good! KumaMiko: Cute. Totally watching it for the bear. Tanaka-kun is Always Listless: How can a show be this funny and this laid-back? Really surprised me in that regard. (Ohta's the best, btw.) There's others I'm watching, as I said. These are some of the standouts. So far, this season's looking pretty great. But I think out of all these shows, Bungo Stray Dogs takes the top spot. I have found something to fill that Blood Blockade Battlefront-shaped hole in my heart. Quote
Toa of Gallifrey Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 These are my first impressions (number of episodes seen indicated): Bakuon!! (2 episodes seen + OVA) The OVA seriously put me off but the series proper is pretty funny and enjoyable. Nothing special but nothing harmful. Big Order (1 episodes seen + OVA) This one was clearly a mistake to watch the OVA first because, like the Mirai Nikki OVA, it was just a glorified trailer with possible spoilers. Still the actual series kinda sucked, especially with its CG Stands, but it'll probably be my guilty pleasure for the season, as was Mirai Nikki before. Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia) (3 episoes seen) I expected it to be a different take on super heroes kinda like One Punch Man but it plays things a lot more straight than I expected. Still really enjoyable and I love the art style, can't wait to see where it goes. Bungou Stray Dogs (2 episodes seen) Another stylistically great anime from Bones that is rather straightforward but incredibly enjoyable regardless. I love the references to Japanese authors and the overall feel of it. Endride (3 episodes seen) I don't find this one very enjoyable, it just has a rather uninspired feeling and doesn't really have any stylistic uniqueness like Academia and Stray Dogs. I really wanna be patient with this one but it feels somewhat boring. If it doesn't get better in a few episodes, I might drop it. Flying Witch (2 episodes seen) Decent premise and likeable characters but kinda dull compared to a couple other really good comedies/slices of life this season. Certainly not bad and it's very pretty looking as far as animation goes but not good for much past being relaxing and a couple laughs here and there. Gyakuten Saiben: Sono "Shinjitsu", Igi Ari! (Ace Attorney) (3 episodes seen) I've never played any of the games before so I came in fresh. I'm really digging it so far. Yeah, you can tell it's a video game adaptation, the cases are really easy to crack but the colorful characters and atmosphere make it thoroughly enjoyable even to someone who isn't a fan of the games. It's really only ok as an anime but it's very enjoyable and I've heard quite faithful as an adaptation. Hundred (1 episode seen, dropped) Yet another ecchi mecha harem school light novel adaptation just like Bahamut last season. Didn't need to wait any longer to see where it'd go, dropped from episode 1. JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken: Diamond wa Kudakenai (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure - Part 4: Diamond is Unbreakable) (3 episodes seen) Easily my favorite so far. After JoJo had a rocky start with me with the 2012 series (being rather bored with the first arc then coming to love the second arc as it went on) then going through Stardust Crusaders with mixed feelings (great presentation, somewhat disappointing meat, great ending, rather forgettable characters for JoJo standards), I'm glad to finally feel like I fully enjoy the series. Partially because it keeps the fantastic presentation and changes pretty much everything I didn't like from the previous series. I've never read the manga so I have no idea how this is gonna go but I'm strapped in ready for the ride. Joker Game (2 episodes seen) Fantastic start and good follow-up. I'd like a little more action from this series going forward but that's just a nitpick, it's fantastic. Can't wait to watch episode 3 later when I have some time. Kiznaiver (2 episodes seen) Decent so far, it has a cool gimmick but isn't incredibly impressive yet. I definitely wanna see where it goes, I just hope it can pick up the pace soon. Koutetsujou no Kabaneri (Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress) (2 episodes seen) I haven't seen Attack on Titan so whether this is too similar to it or not isn't something I have an opinion on. So far it's pretty good, the art style and music in particular are its high points. I like the main character and the story is interesting. Will definitely keep watching. Kuma Miko (Girl Meets Bear) (3 episodes seen) Didn't expect anything out of this one and was very positively surprised. I found it very funny and enjoyable, definitely wanna keep this one. Kuromukuro (2 episodes seen) Interesting start, really wanna see where it goes. I very much like the main characters, the animation is spectacular (even the CG on the mechas looks very nice). Mayoiga (Lost Village) (3 episodes seen) Very interested in this one as far as the mystery goes. Starting with this many characters was a huge gamble that I think was a good one to make. I think the humor can ruin the tension in the scenes sometimes but it's mostly unobtrusive. Netoge no Yome wa Onnanoko ja Nai ta Omotta? (And You Thought There Was Never a Girl Online?) (2 episodes seen) Another guilty pleasure, though I don't find this one to be objectively bad like Big Order, moreso that it's rather cliche and doesn't add much to the table but is still very enjoyable. The fanservice isn't really exploited and it's just a lot of fun. Onigiri (2 episodes seen) Really isn't more than a commercial for the game it's based on, though the first episode was quite enjoyable. Second, however... Hopefully it's at least as entertaining as the first episode. Pan de Peace! (3 episodes seen) Another short CGDCT, with this one's gimmick being bread. It's somewhat funny and short enough to watch as a little fillery series while waiting for something better or when stressed out. Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu (Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-) (3 episodes seen) I technically consider it to be 4/26 seen rather than 3/25 but whatever. Great series, tied with Joker Game for my 2nd favorite spot. Gripping suspense and action and enjoyable characters. I'm very excited for this one. Sakamoto desu ga? (Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto) (1 episode seen) Man DEEN is on fire this year. First KonoSuba and Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu and now this gem (more on the other DEEN anime this season further down). Hilariously executed, so far tied for 3rd place with Luluco. Can't wait for the next episode! Seisen Cerberus: Ryuukoku no Fatalités (2 episodes seen) Like Endride, it feels rather samey to me. The MC's cool but that's about it for me. I'm sticking with it for a bit but I may drop it if it becomes less interesting. Shounen Maid (2 episodes seen) Very funny so far. Not quite as good as Sakamoto or Tanaka-kun but enjoyable enough. Unlike in the other two, the characters here have a bit more meat to them so that's one thing at least in its favor. Sousei no Onmyouji (Twin Star Exorcists) (2 episodes seen) Pretty good so far. I'd like it to have a bit less humor because I find it to be in conflict with the atmosphere but it's overall one of the better non-dedicated comedy series this season. Super Lovers (2 episodes seen) Much better than I expected. Even though the budding romance can feel squicky due to the age difference and them being brothers (though not by blood), I find it cute. The animation isn't quite as good as with Sakamoto or Rakugo (I'm not a huge fan of some scenery shots) but it's hardly DEEN's pre-2016 non-Higurashi Kai/Rei/Kira level and isn't as derpy as KonoSuba's weaker moments. Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge (Tanaka-kun is Always Listless) (2 episodes seen) I find it curious that this series and Sakamoto are essentially each other's inverse. They are both about peculiar high school students except Sakamoto is about a peculiarly exceptional student whereas Tanaka-kun is about a peculiarly listless student. Both series are hilarious for much of the same reasons (though Tanaka-kun has more to spice it up, Sakamoto's general execution is just near flawless). I didn't expect much out of this one but it's certainly a keeper. Uchuu Patrol Luluco (Space Patrol Luluco) (3 episodes seen) What I expected Kiznaiver to have and was a bit sad to find it didn't, Luluco has in spades: Trigger's brew of Kill la Kill-esque crazyness. Thoroughly enjoyable as a standalone series, as a warmup for JoJo on Fridays or as a wind down for JoJo on Fridays (JoJo's my main deal on Fridays). I love everything from the animation to the characters to the voice acting. I would like to continue to explore more of their society as we have in these first few episodes. Definitely tied for third place with Sakamoto for me. As a side note, Ajin ended a few weeks ago and I forgot to give more finalized thoughts. It was great, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would like season 2 but I wager the third movie will pick up where the series left off and possibly make up its own ending or set up for another movie trilogy. No idea about the OVA, I reckon it'll be just a side story. But onto the series itself, I needed about an episode to adjust to the CG but once the ball got rolling I was with it. I enjoyed how there was no one character that was 100% sympathetic (except maybe Kai who they kinda forgot about. WTH was up with that???) and ultimately I'm rating it generously basing off the assumption that it'll be continued further down the line. If it remains unfinished, I'd rate it down a bit but it'd still remain a great series and a highlight for Winter 2016. Quote
LauraSheppard Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 11 Eyes Myself, yourself Bakemonogatari Attack on Totan Black Bullet Kaichou wa maid-sama Twin star exorcists Say 'I love You' Sword art online and many more......totally crazy for anime cartoons. Even got the cake as a joke on my birthday from friends. They had some resources to get that custom made cake to make a joke on me! Anyway I really loved the cake. Quote
Soul of Cinder Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 I like: Kill La Kill, JJBA, TTGL, Hellsing Ultimate, and RWBY. Yeah I'm the guy who made a post that started a brief debate about whether or not RWBY is an anime or not. I forgot what my name and password was, so I had to make a new account. Quote
Toa of Gallifrey Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 I think it falls under animesque but don't mind how you classify it. Gotta watch that too sometime dammit Quote
PenPlays Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 (edited) Gotta watch that too sometime dammit You won't regret it. Yeah I'm the guy who made a post that started a brief debate about whether or not RWBY is an anime or not. I forgot what my name and password was, so I had to make a new account. The thing with RWBY is that it is treated like an anime. A CG anime at that (and probably one of the best). It's in that gray area where it is very much an anime, but it was created in the US. People think, therefore, that it's just a CGI animated cartoon simply because it wasn't made in Japan. It is however being dubbed into Japanese, as well as getting the Manga treatment as well. I can't help but take that as a sign. I personally would consider it an anime, as it being made in the US is the only difference the series has from any other anime. And seeing as anime is treated more as an art style these days, rather than an animation medium, I can't help but feel that it's right to call it anime. Also, typically when big companies like Hot Topic call it an anime, then that's just more confirmation. Oh, yeah, and the soundtrack and Vol. 3 DVD should be dropping this week too! Soul of Cinder Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Anyway regarding JJBA: did anyone else find Angelo going "Um... I dropped off your milk." after Tomoko's rant about dog owners letting their dogs poop everywhere kinda funny? Quote
Toa of Gallifrey Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Everything about Angelo is simultaneously horrific and hilarious. Quote
Toa of Gallifrey Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Ajin season 2 confirmed for October 2016! :D Quote
Aanchir Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 So excited for new Steven Universe episodes to resume in just one week! Quote
Kalhiki Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 So after these past two episodes, I'm now convinced Space Patrol Luluco is the best anime this season. Kinda sucks that Panty and Stocking and Gurren Lagann are both Gainax... I guess we can still get Inferno Cop and Ninja Slayer! Quote
Japanbuilder Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 Loved 80s cartoons. As far as Anime goes though I still am really partial to Macross. I try not to miss any iteration of it though the more recent efforts don't quite do it for me. Raising girls in Japan invariably means I end up watching a lot of Idol Katsu and Pretty Cure though for the life of me I can't make sense of it. They seem to run together with the previous season's. How my kids keep up I don't know. Basically as an adult I stick to Crayon-Shin-Chan. Cant ever go wrong with that heh heh. Quote
