Emperor Claudius Rome Posted August 8, 2009 Posted August 8, 2009 (edited) When I made my first Brickflick (Which never got finished i'm afraid ) I used clay for food, and some trees. Also, I have made a shotgun by taking two Muskets, and attaching them with clay. But should I be using clay? Is clay cheating? Please give your oppion. (Could the mods please make this into a poll?) Emperor Claudius Rome Posted August 8, 2009 Author Posted August 8, 2009 Please explain Prateek. Quote
user Posted August 8, 2009 Posted August 8, 2009 Clay is fine for positioning but if it's to make two pieces stick for SNOT or other things then it's cheating. Quote
Emperor Claudius Rome Posted August 8, 2009 Author Posted August 8, 2009 But I'm talking about making things like food, mud, water ect... Quote
user Posted August 8, 2009 Posted August 8, 2009 But I'm talking about making things like food, mud, water ect... I don't think so but why not just use colored plates? Quote
Luke McAwesome Posted August 8, 2009 Posted August 8, 2009 I don't see it as cheating but more as aiding in your MOCing pursuits. Using it as mud, water, etc. I think is fine, but LEGO already makes official food parts, blue plates, and brown plates. Remember, all this is only a BrickLink order away. Quote
Emperor Claudius Rome Posted August 8, 2009 Author Posted August 8, 2009 But clay is so much more realistic for mud and water I like using it as food because when animating, you can make it look like the fig is actually eating Quote
ziljin Posted August 8, 2009 Posted August 8, 2009 Well it's lego, so it doesn't have to be that realistic. Quote
Milan Posted August 8, 2009 Posted August 8, 2009 I fully agree with 40k, With Lego you test your skills on how to make realistic ambient or vehicle or whatever with bunch of parts which comes in different shapes and size. I do not support using clay for your creation. In my opinion it is better to use nicely made background (photo) with mountains, rivers and sky... Quote
______ Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 All right as long as you don't make a giant tower and fill it with the stuff, I did it when I was a kid. Quote
prateek Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 Please explain Prateek. Like, if you don't have a piece or that piece doesn't exist, then sure go ahead. (e.g. you want to have a minifig holding a slice of pizza, you could just make on out of clay) Quote
Tom Bricks Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 I personally don't usually like the use of clay to make things like this, part of the fun of a brickfilm is that its Lego, you could just do a claymation film instead. Share some pictures though, it would be nice to see how well they fit in your movie. Quote
Emperor Claudius Rome Posted August 9, 2009 Author Posted August 9, 2009 I also think it works better as blood than using red tiles. Quote
Siegfried Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 I personally wouldn't do it... but that's just me. I do however use Blu-Tak to hold things in place when taking photos. For example here... ...I just couldn't keep the crystal in my hand due to Fabuland fig limitations. However I'd never use Blu-Tak where it was overly obvious. Quote

Siegfried Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 Is that for an upcoming review? Possibly; I do like the set! However I have several sets with photos all taken that I just have to compile into a review so it may never happen. Quote
Emperor Claudius Rome Posted August 9, 2009 Author Posted August 9, 2009 (edited) Here are some test pics I made to show how well clay workes. An American Privateer vs a Pirate! Who will win? The Pirate fires his musketoon. A direct hit on the Privateer! He's bleading! And the winner is the Pirate (And clay ) Edited August 9, 2009 by Emperor Claudius Rome Quote
Dutch Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 No. I don't think you should use clay like when the Pirate shoots his gun use this free program called Gimp and if you do download it look here for tutors. Quote
Luke McAwesome Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 Have you already started what you were going to use the clay in? Because to tell the truth, using it on the figures didn't look that great... I still reccomend trans-red round 1x1 studs as blood, and red round 1x1 studs as chunks. (That sounded really weird.) I personally wouldn't do it... but that's just me. I do however use Blu-Tak to hold things in place when taking photos. For example here... ...I just couldn't keep the crystal in my hand due to Fabuland fig limitations. However I'd never use Blu-Tak where it was overly obvious. Sinner, you crazy seal! ... It appears that we have some sort of line of torture. You torture Hinckley, and Hinckley tortures me. Is this some sort of way to get anger out of our systems? Quote
MrTools Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 clay is fine, just dont overuse it, i have a freind who uses clay in his animations and they turn out fine. Quote
Commander Flash Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 If you can really get it to look good, its okay, but otherwise, it looks cheezy. As others said, Brick films are best being 100% lego pieces. Quote
VBBN Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 It's your brickfilm, you do what you want. If other's don't like what you use in your film, then they can make their own brickfilm and leave yours alone. Just get a good crafting skill down with clay. Quote
blueandwhite Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 I always find these debates fascinating. If you ran a poll asking who was a purist and who feels that mixed-media LEGO is okay you'd probably end up with virtually identical results. At the end of the day, why does it matter what others think? If you're a purist then the answer is obvious; don't use clay. If you're not then do whatever suits your fancy. The only question you need to ask yourself is whether you consider yourself a purist or not, however given your poll I'd say that it seems pretty likely that you are not a LEGO purist. If the previous statement is true, perhaps you need to ask other non-purists (we purists are probably a bit too biased on this one) whether the plasticine effects look good or not. Quote
