Buzz's ship being $40 is insane, I was thinking $30 tops.

Exactly what I'm thinking. If even the giant Buzz is $25, how would it be justified for this little thing to cost $15 more?

Has anyone noticed that one of the plastic army men has a green back pack? You can see in OKY's zoom of the jeep that one of the soldiers has a thing around his neck.

No, I don't think anyone has. Good spot! This set is getting better all the time!

fail.

:hmpf: Care to share more than just one word?

Sorry if this picture has been posted before (but I do not want to read through 15 pages - please forgive me):

Yes, we have seen those pics several times now, and they have been around since toy fair, and the original ones weren't even squashed.

I wonder if the double round bases are attached to the legs...

This is Lego. Since when has anything been attached to anything?

I had not noticed that, so thanks for pointing that out. Again, just another cherry adding to that pie. (Don't tell me I'm stupid for making up that saying  )

fail.

Even i have more to say than one word :sceptic:

I bet TLC is gonna sell a ton of those army dudes. I wonder if the double round bases are attached to the legs...

I'm pretty sure the rounded bases are going to be separate pieces and will not be permanantly attached to the legs. If they were the jeep sould become useless because the figs could not fit in it.

Good point.

Looking more closely at the giant Zurg, I am totally getting him. Sure his construction is far more simple than Buzz, but he still looks great and all that purple is calling to me...

I think these sets really do have 2 x 4 tiles. There are three signs that look like they use them, there's the hood of the jeep which has a partial line across it in the image, but no visible gap in the front edge. Then there's another thing that no one has mentioned: the tiles on the wings of Buzz's ship. They appear to be printed. There's one gap between studs 4 and 5, and no other gap. I noticed them myself before reading any of the discussion here. With five separate examples, I think it might not be coincidence.

I think I can hear it too. At only $25, I might get a second one just for parts!

Some rather valid points, although the jeep's hood still looks like two 2x2s to me.

The tiles on the wings are probably not printed, but stickered. If you zoom in closely on them in the pic on the frontpage, you can see that the prints are offset a little.

Anyway, I guess there is a chance that there are 2x4 tiles in this theme, but I still think it's pointless and would prefer it if they did it the "old fashioned way" (with two 1x4s).

So I'm sorry - at least I haven't seen only blurry pics of them before.

Btw: Does someone know whether the wings of Capt. Buzz Lightyear can be run in and out?

Good question. I have been pondering about that for quite some time myself. I concluded that there must indeed be some kind of mechanism there due to these reasons:

  • You can see all four studs on top of the purple wing piece, and it seems to end before reaches the jetpack, so it must be attached somewhat loosely.
  • There is a dark gap between Buzz' body and his jetpack which could easily be a place for the wings to disappear in or for some mechanism to be hidden in.
  • TLG would want to cram as much playability as possible into this set, and having the wings fold out somehow would be an obvious choice.

However, I don't think that the wings slide in because Buzz' body seems to be just 8 studs wide, and each wing is 9 studs wide, so there wouldn't be much space for both wings to disappear in. Instead, I believe that the wings will fold down, like they do in the movie. This way they will be side by side when folded down, and since they are each 4 studs wide, they will sum up to 8 studs, the perfect width for them to disappear in the jetpack. If I'm right, I'm also guessing that there is a rubberband inside the jetpack, and when you press a button on the back, the wings spring up.

I hope that answered your question.

Wow, he's a fat little fig. Really though, I think you are right. If they do anything, it will more than likely be just folding down, not concealing themselves inside the pack.

I doubt they would spring up, but you never know.

1x4s, I'd actually completely forgotten about those. I'd only been thinking about 2x2s, which the signs definitely are not to my eye, but they could be 1x4s now that you mention it. The Wanted poster's probably held together with a regular 2x2 plate on the back of two 1x4s. I've always reckoned that the jeep hood is a pair of 2x2s.

On Buzz's wings; it took me a minute to realise y'all were talking about the big one, I was looking at the little minifig and thinking "eight studs wide, whah?"

I have no idea how much that is in Australian, but it sounds good!

And I am hoping that the Big Buzz has a cool wing mechanism, I probably won't get him but it would be a neat feature.

To the Brickmobile!

Oh, was he talking about the fig? Well, if you were, Klaus Dieter, then I must say that I'm pretty sure that those tiny wings don't move at all. If anything, they are detachable. They look like they are stuck into the jetpack/armor mold in this picture.

The Wanted poster's probably held together with a regular 2x2 plate on the back of two 1x4s.

Nah, that would be too unstable. It would have to be two 2x2s.

That's how I interpreted it. I was beginning to wonder how you came up with the body being eight studs wide.

If he was talking about the giant figure, then I would almost be positive that the wings fold in some way or another, and probably would still not spring up, unless there was a new brick or two involved.

You'd be surprised. Lego designers can be very creative with rubber bands sometimes. For example, the way the Technic Droideka, PIT, and Battle Droid transformed is pretty amazing.

@ Klaus Dieter: Do you mind clearing it up for us which Buzz Lightyear you meant?

I doubt the minifig's wings move, they look too small and narrow to fold in. However, they do probably clip on separately to the rest of his gear.

The MF Buzz' wings do not retract. They are a separate piece that slide into a notch on the side of the pack. I didn't get a photo, but I did see it.

The hood of the Jeep appears to be 2 2x2 squares. My photo didn't come out clean, but it's the best I can tell.

The Sheriff's Office / Jail on the other hand, does use a 2x4 tile, as does the wing of the spacecraft.

Thanks for the confirmation, Shtick.

Since TLG is determined to use stickers, at least they have listened to fans who hate them applied across multiple parts and produced some new, more decal-friendly tiles.

Posted

Well, that settles that. Thanks, Shtick!

So, do Buzz' wings have some kind of stick to fit in that notch or how does it work exactly?

I can see a knob on the side of the jail. I bet it's some kind of jailbreak feature.

Also, now that I think about it, it's kinda strange that there is Wanted poster for Stinky Pete. I mean, wasn't he a good guy in Woody's Round Up? Oh well, I guess it adds more story and playability to the set.

And I suppose you're right, Svelte. The fact that they didn't use that piece on the jeep proves that they developed it solely for the purpose of stickers. Some people are probably happy about that, but I'm not. I never had problems with stickers (I even prefer them over prints sometimes), nor did it bother me if they were put on top of multiple bricks. Therefore, as I said before, this seems like a pointless juniorization to me. But if it makes other people happy, so be it. :classic:

Glad I could help. ;-)

It appeared that there was a tab on the wing, and it inserted into a slot on the pack. The wing was missing from the display, so I got a fairly good look at the assembly. Wish I had thought to take photos of it.

I would have gotten more detail shots, but ~kids~ wanted to look at the toys!! The nerve!!!!

That's fine. I can imagine it perfectly well. Thanks. :classic:

Sigh. :hmpf: Always those ratchet kids! Why are they so interested in our Lego anyway?

Silly children, Lego is for AFOLs!

On to the next riddle: What's up with Buzz' helmet? Why is it always seen half open? Is there perhaps a front half that we haven't seen until now or is this how it's meant to be? :look:

Edited by Oky Wan Kenobi

Ha, I was right about the 2 x 4 tiles :devil::wink:

I bet AFOLs would have been happier with 1 x 3 tiles instead. With these applications, 2 x 4 tiles aren't really necessary, but they can be useful to create bigger smooth surfaces (car hoods, for example, but they don't appear to be using them for that purpose in the Toy Story theme :hmpf: ) and for signs of course.
