Ladies, gentlemen...

I'd like to draw your attention to THESE hi-res set and minifig photos I found on R.Czerniawsk's Flickr page (many thanks to you). Some of these minifig photos look like early images with which LEGO's graphic designers would work with.

There's some truly inspiring design here - some of the submarines look fantastic and superbly detailed, the minifigs are lovely. But there's some not-so good elements too - I really dislike the Exo-force style submarine and the Atlantean ruins seem a little too lightly touched upon. I'm still struggling with the red colour scheme - it totally, totally doesn't suit this theme - but I'm being won over!

Based on what I've seen here's my tuppence worth - please excuse the non-use of names but I'll assume you've seen the pictures

8056 - This is okay. Brick-built crab is fine but the stickers let it down. I'd much rather get...

8057 - What a beauty! Low price point, wonderfully designed submarine with plenty of detail for it's size. Also includes 2 of the arguably best minifigs from the line with that grizzly cap'n and a sharman (Sharkmen, Peppermint M! Sharkmen!)! Multiple purchases a must.

8059 - One of the least interesting sets (and much criticised here) compared to the submarines and not one I'm likely to buy. Looks very Power Miners.

8060 - As I mentioned above, way too Exo-force and lacks the solidity of the other subs. Minifigs can be collected from other sets.

8061 - For being an Atlantis exploration theme, Atlantis is disappointingly tiny! That aside the monster is great, the minifigs too - Lord Octon is fab!

8072 & 8073 - Army builders ahoy! Great mini propulsion device for the diver too.

8075 - A SUPERB centrepiece for the human divers! This sub looks great, oozes style and comes with loads of extras including that nice little mini rover. Must... buy... this!

8079 - A fearsome beast indeed, and limited edition too! It has a very unusual look to it due to the use of new parts but some of it's features i.e. heads, claws, legs (?!), could've looked that bit more aquatic in my opinion. Still, pretty cool, there's just better sets here.

Sorry if these hi-res images have been posted before. I browsed through the whole thread and couldn't see them and felt they neede to be aired!

Thanks for the link, pedro! I agree, the small Sharkman set looks decent, and will probably serve as my "sample the line to see if I like it" set. Some of the large, brick-built monsters look inferior to their Aquaraiders ancestor (namely the squid and crab). I honestly don't care for the red color scheme either. I'm really not sure what to think of this line.

Anyone noticed that Crab have new pieces on legs? I mean... End of legs are not 'Teeth-spike' piece- its bigger and looks more like banana

Are you sure they aren't bananas with a different colour scheme?

I notice lego is starting to give us more minifigs with wrinkles.

Thanks for the link to these better pictures, pedro! I have mixed feelings about the theme, still. At one hand, the new minifigs and parts are really awesome, but on the othetr hand the vehicles look kind auninspired, the playability seems very low to me, and i also can't make out really a lot of accesoires in these sets. also, it's all over again machines against monsters. Why do divers in a theme called atlantis just fight against monsters instead of searching after the fairytale city atlantis? I was hoping we'd get sets with some cool ruin buildings, and what else that has to do with atlantis. That is only the case in ONE of these sets. I hope, if the line continues, we'll get some sets with more underwater buildings too, instead of only the old monsters fighting stuff!

Muchos gracias Pedro!

Here's my assessment:

Overall, I really like the color scheme and love the new minifigs for both sides. I also think that there should be more/bigger Atlantis ruins. Maybe those will come in the second wave.

8056 - Love the brick built crab.

8057 - I was excited when I first saw this set and am glad to see it has my favorite new head from the theme.

8059 - Pretty cools set. Glad they have sea floor vehicles as well as subs.

8060 - Like the set and the flick fire torpedoes aren't half bad, just wonder why the Technic cannons are facing backwards.

8061 - Very cool. Love the minifigs, ruins and brick-built squids.

8072 - Cool little set. Really like the minifig's head.

8073 - Boring. Could have came with a shark.

8075 - Must be the big boss ship. Wish it had one or two more Atlantis creature-minifigs.

8079 - This set is cool in a box. Not much for the sub, but the creature makes up for it.

Like Power Miners, I will at least get all the 20$ and under sets.

oh god

I so want those back plate pieces.

And those new claw things. :3

Are you sure they aren't bananas with a different colour scheme?

They aren't. There's no taper at the connecting end.

If I wasn't sold on this theme before, I most CERTAINLY am now!!

Firstly I'll have to say that every single minifig in this theme is absolutely fantastic. The divers are all kinds of awesome and extremely collectible; that scuba helmet is just oozing with awesome. The Sharkman looked a little uninteresting until I saw him from this view; WOW! He looks great too! The Manta ray guy is also a sight to behold when viewed from this angle, but I rather think that his face is way outdone by his awesome mask. I only wish he came in black!

But the best minifig by far is the Octoman. It's as close to a Davy Jones as we'll ever get- and frankly I think he looks WAY cooler than Davy Jones anyway! He's really the only reason to get the Atlantis Ruins, besides the cool squid monster it comes with.

Now onto the sets:

8059- Definitely not the most remarkable set from this theme... but it's not as bad as people say. I think it will be fun to play with.

Impulses- not much to say about these, but for those who just want the minifigs and not the sets, these are perfect!

8061- Since when did a city look like an outpost? This set is a little too bland for my liking. It's not bad, but it needs a little oomph to merit a purchase. The only reason to get it is the Octoman and huge monster squid. But those might be reasons good enough...

8060- This set is only cool because it looks like the submarine equivalent of a stunt fighter. Otherwise it has a very skeletal, Exo-Forcey (as some have mentioned) kind of feel that I have trouble forgiving. It's not terrible, but if it's even a dollar over $19.99 I'll pass on it.

8075- EASILY the best set this theme has to over!! Awesome design, great detail, original look and stylish construction, this is by far one of the most promising sets of 2010! I even like the little rover it comes with! Too bad the minifigs aren't exclusive.

8079- ...whoa. That is one cool sea creature. Still I'm not sure if I'll get it... it's not as striking as some of the other sets.

8056- Nothing special, but I like the design of the crab creature. I might pick it up.

8057- This is sure to be a hit- well designed, cool figs, and cheap. I'll be sure to get it!

All in all I have to say that this theme is looking VERY promising!

Nice find! I can almost guarantee that this will be merged with the other thread though...

That bad-guy Impulse has got to be the lamest ever, in terms of actual set. The mf is  !

Who says there are no Pirates in 2010?

Thanks so much for those pics! :sweet: I'm getting more and more sold on this theme. The minifigs are superb and the designs are great! I'm definitely getting the four smallest sets for the figs (even though the Manta Warrior impulse is an even bigger rip-off than than 8400 Space Speeder :hmpf_bad: ) if for anything and maybe later I'll get turbojet and the ruins too.

Bring on 2010!

I was already sure about buying the impulse sets, I'll probably get the 5,5 and 8 Euros sets too. I still don't think this theme is such a big thing, at least animinifigs look good.

Just wanted to point out that pedro was a bit faster, he posted the link to the pictures earlier already and they are already beeing discussed

'tis true! :classic:

I was just thinking... these sets' parts will awesome for M-tron MOCers!

Thanks for the close-up pics. I'm now sure that I will get the Octopus Gate and the impulse set with the blue manta ray fig, but most likely none of the others. The big, red machines don't just do anything for me.

Yes, these are great close up pics. I can decide what I want from this theme now. My favourate set seems to be 8057, a Shark-Person and a nice MiniFig, plus the actual Red Machine does not look to bad either, I will also get a few of 8073 and a 8061. For me this theme has worked out perfectly, I do not mind buying the biggest set (I use lots of dark tan/ blays & black) and several of the smallest, and I do not need to get any of the big red submarines (which are not my cup of tea either).

In many ways this theme can please the AFOL and the Kids. The kids get some Big Red Submarines (which I am sure they will love), as Adults we get lots of new and interesting MiniFigs, and Lego gets lots of sales!

I don't care for the manta ray figure, but the others are nice. Anyone else notice that the crab symbol is only in the crab encounter set? I wonder if there'll be a minifig that's crab-based... maybe in the summer wave?

Posted

Nice find! I love the bloodshot eyes of the King Squid fig.

I don't like how all the human figs look bald with the helmet mould going so far back on the top of their heads.

Some good new minifig heads but the rest?.. no, thanks!

BrickLink will save me from buying any of these sets

even though im not a big fun of themes like this one (power miners, exo force mars mission, aqua riders, which one im i forgetting?)

i have to say this is the best designed of them all!! especially better than power miners in design of both the vehicles and the minifigers.

it reminds me of how yell designed and smooth was the second wave of mars mission.

just shows that lego can do great work in play themes as well!!

and i have to say that im gonna want to buy a few of these!!

Those underwater apparatus's the humans are using look alot like the space helmets seen in the movie "Alien." You know where the facehugger alien attacks the guy. :alien: Very cool design and the sets all look great in my opinion.

I'm really liking this theme, thanks for the pic finds, pedro. I personally enjoy the red/ trans-neon green color scheme, something... unusual, but simple. By unusual I mean that SW is one of the only themes where red is such a prominent color.

I'm also loving the dedication put into the minifigs- it'll be interesting to see what can be done with the heads (underneath the head pieces), and the SPIII-esque headpieces are always welcome. The new human faces are pretty neat, too... I wonder if the female is old or if those wrinkles are from being underwater too long.

Lastly, I like how the most desirable minifigs (for me, at least) can be found in the least expensive sets (it looks like the dark blue manta ray figure comes in a set by itself... with a rock).
