Tereglith Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 I just wish the giant squid looked cooler Giant squids don't need to look cool. They're already cool by virtue of the fact that they are squids, and they are giant Any giant squid is automatically awesome. (I'm something of an armchair archituethologist...) Quote
Thee Pirate Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 Dang. Now how the heck am I supposed to stick them underneath a shako? Ah well, at least this theme still looks great. I'll still probably get them after Pirates is discontinued. Exactly, and there are still heaps of one-sided heads that come out, it's not like they are taking over any time soon. I don't mind double sided heads, but I definitely prefer single sided ones. Double sided heads have forced me to be a little more creative with the Pirates line though. I have to wait until next week to post pics though, all my Lego is in storage at the moment. Quote
Algernon Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 I think this is the only set that people can accuse of juniorization, but if they would just look at it they'd see that it's made up of many smaller parts. It's just well designed so it looks sleek and whole. That's a plus, not a reason to complain. Quote

And it includes some innovative angling techniques- specifically the part right in front of the cockpit. And the side design is pretty tight. Looks like set that's both really solid and VERY swooshable- not to mention fun to build. And isn't that the purpose of a LEGO set? and when taken into consideration, aren't most of the Atlantis sets fitting that criteria? Quote
The Green Brick Giant Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 So if these sets are <insert that tiresome argument>, does that mean Technic sets with smooth plating parts are <insert that tiresome argument>? Yes. LEGO stopped making Technic sets years ago, you get more Technic beams in one Atlantis set than all of the 2010 Technic sets combined. http://www.flickr.com/photos/43184821@N04/...57622388131305/ <insert that tiresome argument> PM megablocks. http://www.flickr.com/photos/43184821@N04/...57622388131305/ That set looks horrible from other angles and might as well be a Technic set. http://www.flickr.com/photos/43184821@N04/...57622388131305/ The bottom part is 4 huge pieces. Most LEGO theme sets are dumbed down and <insert that tiresome argument>, you can't sat PMs are <insert that tiresome argument> and Atlantis is, they are both made from the same mind set. However just because they are <insert that tiresome argument> doesn't mean they are all completely horrible, it just means compared to 15 years ago they are. As long as LEGO doesn't go back to the late 90s and early 2000s everything is good. Quote

As long as LEGO doesn't go back to the late 90s and early 2000s everything is good. Really now. LEGO is LEGO. Technic is no less LEGO than System is. All of these sets are, down to the last stud, made by the exact same company that produced the cherished "classic" sets of old. But a company has to evolve and move forward. Otherwise, it would go bankrupt (and as we all know, it almost did!). So LEGO has to expand it's library of parts in order to keep the sets fresh. And really, is it so bad that the pieces are, on average, much bigger than they used to be? The kind of aesthetics that are being accomplished with the new library of parts wouldn't have been possible in the 70s. The last set that you mentioned looks very smoothly constructed- the large pieces on the bottom just help the rounded, sleek look of the model. It makes the set look better. Why is that bad? If you're afraid that you won't be able to build anything from parts so large, then you are severely lacking in imagination. If the designs are less inspired, it has absolutely nothing to do with the inclusion of large parts, it just means that LEGO's art team is having a bad day. It wouldn't have been any different back in the "good old days". A lot of classic Space sets looked horrible. This isn't directed at you so much as the general "anti-juniorization" outcry I've been reading all over this forum... it annoys me. Quote
Peppermint_M Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 You'd think Lego was made for children wouldn't you? So, any more pictures or a clue as to the purpose of those shields? I am also sure I saw a giant shark? Any news on that. Sorry if this was brought up earlier, it's sort of a long thread with much moaning, I can't be bothered to trawl through the acid... Quote
The Crazy One Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 (edited) I don't get it, whats the problem with this so called ' juniorization '? The sets are really something new, they have very inavetive designs, well crafted, amazing new figures. Why is this even a problem? If the sets look good, and you want them, then why complain about it? It all goes back to the fact each one of us is about ten - twenty, even thirty years ahead of the traget market. Who cares? It's for kids. If you want them, buy them, don't lumber us with moaning about how you think they are childish. Edited October 19, 2009 by The crazy one Quote

Yeah I'm pretty sure there is a giant shark set, but I'm not really sure if there are any high-rez pictures of it. It might be an exclusive. Quote
Lordofdragonss Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 There all pictures on flicr, and I think the giant "Mole-Tortoise-WTF?" is really amazing! Quote

The triangle-in-a-circle thingies? They open the octopus gate, and it's possible that they'll do other things in future sets. Quote

user Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 As I've said before THE GUARDIAN OF THE DEEP IS THE SHARK! Is says that as plain as can be on Amazon.com. Quote
The Green Brick Giant Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 how you think they are childish. See you aren't getting it, there is a difference between childish and juniorization. All LEGO ever made (besides some exclusives) are childish because it's meant for kids, however when the sets are Technic based just to hold on the ugly huge pieces it's a mess, more so the "pod racer" set. Look at that set from any other angle than the box art and it's a hideous mess. Luckily the small sets looks great, a nice blend of old style and new. Quote
Tereglith Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 (edited) Yes, Guardian of the Depp (Deep, sorry, I've just been reading about POTC4 ) is the shark, at the rarely-seen $16.99 price point. I'm guessing around 150 pieces, and I'm not sure what sort of presence the divers will have in the set. Edit: Oh, Booyah! I just bothered to look it up on Amazon. It is 16.99, and it has 144 pieces. They're exciting description (in the innovative form of a bulleted list!) is below. -Set includes 1 heroic diver minifigure with harpoon -Diver accessories included: Scuba helmet, tank, harpoon shooter and swim fins -Features shark guardian with biting jaws, moving tail and poseable head -Collectible red Atlantis treasure key included - collect them all -144 pieces My thoughts are thus. -"Heroic Diver". Seriously? -What is the "shark guardian" guarding? The entire 'Deep'? That's a pretty big territory for one shark... -"Collect them all"... Pokemon much? -Also, once again, BOOYAH on my piece guessage. But no matter how bad the Amazon description is, the set looks totally win. Edited October 19, 2009 by Tereglith Quote

Do you mean the build is childish or the actual idea of the set? Theres a big difference. Power Miners is a very childish theme, but the models themselves can be quite complex. Likewise with technic based sets, they are still childish in theme, but their builds are in some cases very complex. I cant tell what youre driving at. So what if some technic sets are ugly?? You are using two different points, so your making no sense. Edited October 19, 2009 by The crazy one Quote
Dannylonglegs Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 It might be an exclusive. I doubt it. Havn't we already found its name ( guardians of the deep) on a website for like $17 Quote

If you would like to read all about it, you can either look at my previous post, or click on the conveniently located hyperlink below. Conveniently Located Hyperlink :D Although, looking at the rest of the prices on amazon, I suspect that many of them are higher than what the final US prices will be. I'm thinking more like $15 for this set. Edited October 20, 2009 by Tereglith Quote

The Cobra Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 "In his search for the red Atlantis treasure key, the deep-sea diver has encountered one of the deadliest guardian creatures of all: An enormous black shark covered in Atlantean markings. Will the diver’s harpoon and swimming skills be enough to escape the shark’s snapping jaws and thrashing tail with the precious key, and its clue to the lost city’s location? " What's with TLC? Did the anti-violence policy sink into the deep sea? Quote

Front Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 I just enjoy AFOL's reviews of sets they haven't built or even seen yet. I guess next year, to avoid being so last year, people will have to share their opinions based on rumoured set numbers and names. Quote

Yeah I agree, but the funny thing is the sets most hated often turn out great. I remember people were going absolutely bats (not a pun) at the promo pictures of the Agents sets, decrying them as the worst Lego sets ever. Cue reviews, then everyone was all over them.
