hewkii9 Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 Over my tenure at Eurobricks, I've noticed that there really isn't that much discussion of the actual techniques we use in creations So an idea struck me. Why not have some topics in their respective forums, where builders could share favorite techniques relevant to their themes [sNOT waterfalls and crenelations in Historic Themes, expert greebling in Sci-Fi, new uses for Piraka heads in Bionicle, etc.] This wouldn't be like an arbitrary list of the techniques, more like a place to discuss and post them - whoever starts the topic would list their techniques, open the floor for discussion, and then note the posts further down which contain new techniques. The topics wouldn't even need to be stickied, either - I think that this is a new enough thing to discuss that the topics would thrive for a long time. If this came to fruition, here's the template for how a first post would go, just an example - Historic Themes - Wild West TechniquesThis topic is for discussion and posting of any building techniques that would prove useful in a Wild West/Indians/Civil War creation. Technique list - Bell [the technique, with a description and pictures, this would be a technique supplied by the topic starter] Cannon by Member Tepee originally by Non-EB Member, posted by Jimmy This template could of course be refined, but I'd like to hear everyone else's opinions on this. Ricecracker Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 I think this would be a great idea! Just today, I was going through Mad Physicist's photostream, pondering how to make the sliding doors on his Ice Cream van and delivery van. It'd also be useful to have only one place that you need to look to to find all the techniques you need while MOCing. Quote

Lo and behold, such a magical place exists! Simply click here to get to it. Ever bothered to check the General Discussion index? C'mon, Ricecracker, you should know this! One of the topics indexed there was started by you! And since we already have that thread, I don't think a theme specific versions of it are necessary. Edited August 13, 2009 by Oky Wan Kenobi Quote

I know about that, but it doesn't encompass a comprehensive guide with theme specific techniques . Quote
Oky Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 I just don't think that many techniques are very theme specific. If you think about hewkii9's examples, you will see that waterfalls and crenelations can be used in almost every theme, and Sci-Fi greebling can be used in the action themes and City as well (for factories and such). There are exceptions like spaceship engines in Sci-Fi or, as suggested, tepees in Western/History, but I don't think it's worth it to create separate topics for these exceptions. I think it would be easier to have the one index of all techniques that we have and that's it. If somebody has several ideas for making a certain type of MOC and want to share them, I'm sure they'll post them in their own thread, and then it will get indexed in the main techniques thread. This is just my opinion of course, and I might be wrong. Quote
KimT Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 And the Star Wars Forum already has one as well. Just click here.. Quote
hewkii9 Posted August 19, 2009 Author Posted August 19, 2009 I've never seen that before, although I think it's pretty much what I had in mind. Would it be alright if I used that format for a Historic Themes equivalent, to start it off? Quote

Technic techniques ( ) are somewhat specialized because they involve mechanisms. Although it doesn't hurt to just create a thread if you have something new in mind. Quote
