I went to see District 9 today and I thought it was brilliant! It was very gritty and realistic, probably one of my favorite sci-fi films of all time now. Great storyline, Great aliens, and seamless special effects. If you have'nt seen it and you love Sci-Fi I highly reccomend it that you see it. It's an hour and 48 minutes long but feels longer. If you don't like movies that make you think about what you just saw then this is not the ,ovie for you.

If you saw it what did you think?

Haven't seen this yet, but I'm planning to.

Oh, and moved to Culture & Multimedia forum!

I'm probably not going to see it but the advertising approach was good

It looks pretty good, and is definitely on my list of movies to see this summer.

Is it vary gory and/or scary because I have horrible nightmares from horror movies?

It was really good with lots of people exploding. It wasn't actually that bad for gore and it certainly was not a horror movie to give anyone nightmares unless mutation, hacking off of limbs and some nasty dinner choices give you nightmares.

Star Trek was more fun, for an old Trekkie like me but D9 was good enough that I am looking forward to a sequel.

Oh dear goodness please let there not be a sequel. 99% of the time sequels are awful, I'm just hoping the makers of this film realise that some (read: most) films are better off without them.

To the Batbrickmobile!

I saw it and thought it was wonderful. It is one of the most refreshing sci-fi movies I've seen in years. Definitely some parts that had me squeemish, though. :classic:

It was very clever. bustop for humans only  !

Saw it, loved it. It was a nice departure from the usual Hollywood fare. The setting alone, Africa, with all the trash and impoverishment, set this apart from the usually clean look of most Western produced sci-fi. The political overtones are there, but the movie is never preachy; rather, the conditions, echoing the darker side of history in that country and many others throughout history, are merely a backdrop to illustrate the contrasts and comparisons between human and alien, and provide motivation for the latter to desire better than what they've been given. The alien exo-suit was just plain awesome. Cheers to Weta for their outstanding work, as often one can't tell what is a practical effect and what is CG. The aliens convey emotion believably, and the main protagonist was brilliant. I don't think I've enjoyed a movie this much since Iron Man, for all out action and laughs. People die terribly in this, and it's fantastic!

While I have not seen it (but am planning too), I have to say the marketing has been tremendous. The viral marketing was simply genius. Nothing I have ever seen before.

I disagree - I for one eagerly await the direct-to-video sequel, District 9:2, the romantic comedy between Tania and Wikus, in which the prawns are muppets!

I liked Aliens better than Alien. D9 left a lot of interesting possibilities open which could be turned into a really good hard sci-fi.

I think this why he said 99% of the time. I agree with you though. "Aliens" , the sequel to "Alien" was far better than the orignal. Another example would be Empire strikes back, then Return of the Jedi even surpased it. Then we have the Indianna Jones movies. Each one was a step up from the previous. The Dark Knight was also supior, as was Transformers ROTF. So there are plenty of examples of a line that can succed with a sequel.

I haven't seen District 9 yet, so i can't coment if a sequel would be a good idea. But the concept seems like a very good and orignal one.

This is the first sequel I usually think of when people say "sequels always stink." I actually consider them equal, since they're really two different paced movies. (One classic sci-fi horror the other sci-fi action).

Then we have the Indianna Jones movies. Each one was a step up from the previous.

Blasphemy!

But I definitely agree that sequels can be good. I enjoyed District 9 so much, and am looking forward to anything Neill Blomkamp directs. There's a couple good short films of his on youtube that show off his wonderful imagination.

Fixed. Good examples of good sequels could also be The Godfather II, Mad Max 2 and From Russia with Love.

Still, I felt District 9 was a good standalone film, I don't feel it needs a sequel.

Return of the Jedi was the best of the 3 original SW films. We got Ewoks, mini Imperial Walkers (sorry, i don't remember the technical term), A and B-Wing fighters, Jaba the hut, the most epic ground, space and hand to hand combat battles of all time. This was an epic win and an improvement of the first two.

IJ gave us a progress story into each film, and the Last Crusade was by far the best of the three again with good battles, a variety of vehicles in both sea and air, and land and the best women! Again, an epic win! Anyone can see this!:tongue:

Any film can have a sequel as long as its done correctly and can add to the story. Though i can't necessarily comment on D9cause i haven't seen it yet, but i imagine the same rules apply to it as any other movie in term of making a sequel.

I saw this on the weekend and thought it was brilliant  It was very original and what was great was the sense of surprise - at the start, you don't quite know which way it's going to go, and it twisted direction a few times, and certainly kept me guessing. The special effects were top-notch; not at all distracting or fake-looking, and there was pathos, humour and social commentary by the bucketload, but never overshadowing an enjoyable and moving journey for the protagonists and audience.

It doesn't strike me as a movie that requires a sequel, and since this is the director's first big movie, it doesn't strike me that he would want to do a repeat. Since Peter Jackson's production company arranged the financing there may be something contractual for options on sequels, but neither of those guys strike me as directors who would churn out sequels just because they can.

I thought this Film was quite simply an amazing work. The incredible twists of character, creative film making, ludicrous amounts of people blowing up  ,

Most entertaining film this year, up there with Hurt Locker

I have to say, in good Sci-fi tradition it does not NEED a sequel.

That said

since they kept going on and on about how the alien would be back in three years and Wikkers is still alive and aware

they certainly seem to be hinting it will be "concluded".

It was a beautiful movie, and a must-see for 2009.

From the start, it was captivating. And that said, Some parts are spoiler'd

With the interviews and documentary feel, it was new for a Sci-fi Genre. It took my some time to realize

they were talking about the past, which would hook you in, seeing what would happen

. The lack of characters make it so that there aren't many character to develop.

Wikus developed well, the Lead Actor putting on a compelling first performance. The little kid prawn, I wish had some more to him, other than being an innocent and apparently a genius with mechanics.

The emotions of the prawns were also very life-like. CG was unbelievably real, and the small body language made them relatable.

The gore, it wasn't just shock-value gore, it had meaning. The entire movie was filled with emotion, love, hate, anger, grief... and it simply flowed;

I nearly cried at the Weapon Testing Scene

. The political meaning behind it is also really intense, but not so much to shove it in your face [*cough*PETA*cough*].

Overall it's just an unbelievably heavy movie. My Dad and I just took a deep breath and sighed at the end.

And the last scene? Perfect.

I'm definitely grabbing a DVD when it comes out.

I saw the movie last night. I thought it was good. I wouldn't go as far as others do into absolutely amazing territory (and I honestly don't know what I didn't like about it) but it was well worth seeing and I will likely get the DVD. I did think there were several new ideas (well, as new as any idea really can be as far as movies/storytelling) floating around in the movie and that gets the movie points in my book. The comments on what humanity is capable of were fairly accurate.

The fact that there were no real good guys in all this mess was interesting (even the main prawn was motivated by self interest and used deceptive claims) and the fact that Wikus took most of the movie to even begin to see the errors of his "outlook" was a refreshing change from the magical, instant turn around most characters seem to undergo in situations like this.

It's comments on how much society is willing to either ignore or be completely apathetic about are pretty spot on as well.

As for a sequel, I just don't know. There are things I want to know and things I would want to see, but I could also see it all going horribly wrong if they go wth the wrong angle. Overall, my belief is that you don't know those things until you try them so I hope there is a sequel. I just hope they don't screw it up and admit that is a very real possibility.

Well said!

I totally agree and will definently be buying it when it comes out. I personally don't know if I wish for a sequel or not because this movie alone is just so incredibly well made. I'm afraid of the possibility that the sequel would be really crappy. Either way though i'm just happy we got this one and I hope it does well on the box office.

I don't understand the fear of a sequel. It has the chance as being good/bad as any new movie, and what is there to lose? Do we honestly think less of Jaws because the sequels went downhill? Or Rocky? Or any of the other examples?
