MetroiD Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 The fact that I speak English and German fluently and have a little bit of knowledge of French as well probably helped. In that case you'd probably enjoy 'A Day in Europe'. I personally thought it was a great movie. @nintha: I don't think you were even supposed to be watching that movie considering your age. And even if you did watch it, I guess it's only fair you didn't enjoy it. Tarantino doesn't exactly write scripts that would thrill teenagers or kids. Quote
def Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 I was really impressed by this film. It wasn't what I was expecting, even though I've seen all of Tarantino's previous films. I loved them all more or less, except Death Proof. I find his trailers don't promote the movie accurately. I was pretty surprised by Kill Bill 1& 2 too. Just not what I was expecting, but that was what was delightful, watching a movie and being surprised, but that the writing wasn't gimmicky. In IB, I was sure he was going to let the 'real' Nazis live, like Hitler and Goebbels, but he didn't! He killed them. After it was over, I thought back to that "Once upon a time..." caption, and it all made perfect sense... But it was a ballsy move as a filmmaker. The people who don't like the movie, well... This was a mature movie. People talking, people not using English, it's not a crowd-pleaser. It's a movie for people who like movies. The intensity of a lot of scenes got to me. The restaurant scene, when the Nazi officer orders the girl pastry, this scene was sooooo tense. If your heart wasn't racing in anticipation, you were watching a different movie than me. This might be Tarantino's best, but it's hard to say, since Kill Bill 2 was so phenomenal. Quote
Big Cam Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 Sorry to revive this thread, but I finally got around to seeing this movie, and I had to share my thoughts. I, like apparently many here, found it to be very enjoyable. The fact that I speak English and German fluently and have a little bit of knowledge of French as well probably helped. I can understand if somebody who only knows one of the languages featured in the film didn't enjoy it as much because he/she had to read a lot during the movie. But as Batbrick once said, it's part of the uniqueness of this movie that it breaks away from the main stream by not being afraid of showing conversations in the language that they would be in real life. I can also imagine that a lot of people would have preferred more screen time for the basterds for many reasons, especially Americans, and I must admit that I'm one of those people, but I also think that the movie works just fine the way it is. The ending definitely made up for all the action that was missing during the movie. Needless to say, the acting was great, and Lt. Raine and Col. Landa sure were some great characters! Due to its Tarantino-typical original structure, it was quite interesting to watch, and simply "something else", something that is very good to see in movies these days. I enjoyed it about as much as Pulp Fiction (which is the only other Tarantino movie I've seen).By the way, what's with the "typo" in the title? I don't get it. Oky, Kill Bill and Resevoir Dog's should be on that list as well, both are as good as Pulp Fiction in my opinion. As for IB, I saw it in the theatre's and it's on my short list for DVD's to buy. L-space Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 What a coincidence. Today my collegues talked about this film. Ranging from terrible to fantastic. I guess I will have to find out for myself soon. BTW, I think Jackie Brown is the best. Quote
