Hi, I'm new here, this is my first post. While surfing Youtube for videos of LEGO Monorail sets,

I came across one that I wanted to show you, one that impressed me so much.

It's somebody's incredibly sweet, very large Monorail setup, mainly based on the 6399 Airport Shuttle:

2rqohzp.jpg

Obviously this guy had multiple 6399 Airport Shuttle sets, probably COMBINED with multiple 6347 / 6921 extension packs.

There were 4 trains in the video even though I could only see one 6399 box (middle) one 6347 box (right) and one 6921 box (window sill).

Pretty awesome huh? :cry_happy:

If it's taken down from Youtube for some reason, you should be able to download the video here, at least for awhile, and I can always upload it again (Open it with RealPlayer or Quicktime, not Windows Media). I thought it was cool enough to capture the vid and save it.

:classic:

p.s. I completely edited my post. I tend to edit alot, until I'm 100% happy with a thread/post.

Seems like this guy had two or more 6399 sets, and perhaps also one or more of the 6347 expansion track sets

You need a LOT more than one or two expansion packs to create this track. I would have really liked it, if it was included in a nice big layout, now its just showing off.

Yeah, I agree. I can see four of the trains! But he's done nothing good with it so to me it's just a case of "I have these and I'm showing off." :hmpf:

WOAH! that's one of the longest monorail tracks i've seen. Reminds me of the video where the guy has an extended passenger train and the track goes all throughout his house. Have you guys seen that one?!

That would be fun to have, except for your mother who would trip over it everyday

I agree with Rick and Siegfried, that the person is really just showing off.

This setup is quite impressive for its sheer size. I'm not sure what all the hate is about. I like how the track climbs up all the way to the desk and window sill.

I very much agree with CP5670 and 5150 Lego.

I really love how the track climbs up those little 'hills', winds around up onto the desk and then how it's layed out over on the window sill.

That other MASSIVE monorail is mindblowing and I'll have to look again carefully, but it was impressive.

I've recently become very interested (for good reason, obviously) with the 3 main, official LEGO Monorail sets:

*6990 Monorail Transport System (1987)

*6399 Airport Shuttle (1990)

*6991 Monorail Transport Base (1994)

As well as both 'Monorail Track Accessory' expansion/extension packs: 6921 (1989) and 6347 (1991), Because a.) the official sets are extremely cool & desirable, b.) because of the incredible possibilities from combining them, especially multiple ones of each.

Although I've been into Classic Space & Classic Town LEGO since 1979-1980, I almost totally ignored the Monorail sets, because by the time they arrived in the late 80s & early 90s, I had shifted hobbies from LEGO to VIDEOGAMES. Now as an adult, I'm shifting back, lol.

And so what if he is? Thats what the whole point of poasting your mocs right? Part of the reason is to show them off. Wether or not it is part of a layout, its very impressive. I'm with CP5670 and ParallaxScroll. NO need for people to hate.

This individual post here is only going to be for videos of the standard official 6399 Airport Shuttle set in action. No MOC or expansions.

I may add other vids of other monorail MOCs/setups/expansions in other posts *within* this thread later, but this one is just for the plain 6399!

Vid 3

Vid 4

I shall edit more 6399 videos into this post, as & when I find them.

No hate at all. Jealousy sure! But to answer your question, I think it's silly as he might as well of posted a video of a stack of money. No skill or style has gone into his "work". Sure I post MOCs to "show off", but at least my MOCs are a tiny slice of me, and something that I'd like to think only I would make. All this guy has done is buy multiple sets and spread them out. It's not even worthwhile as a review as you can't tell where the base set ends, nor is it even a practical layout. (Disclaimer; I didn't check any other videos.)

Sure it's impressive, but personally I'd feel like a wanker if I posted something like that. It'd be just the same if I created a topic showing my Technic collection, my minifig army, or photos of myself and LEGO in various odd poses.

But it's just an opinion and there's no need for us to agree.

Oh how I wish it was! I've just ordered my first monorail set, the 6990, which I hope will arrive next week.

I have a LONG way to go before being able to put something like THAT guy's setup together ^__^

Oh how I wish it was!

Me too. :cry_sad: I recently bought the Indy "The Temple of Doom" set and I'm having fantasies about the tracks being used for a light elevated rail system...

I can't justify the cost of even one monorail. A friend of mine has one of the old space ones that he leaves in a box and never uses (he reads EB so if I'm unlucky he'll read this  ), and I really want it, but even if he sold it he'd (understandably) ask for more than I want to pay. I'm just to cheap to buy a monorail. I want lots of LEGO, not a few expensive bits that I can admire. Thus I try to ignore expensive classic sets... but the monorails are awfully tempting.

The first two things are done by people all the time, and appreciated by many others for that matter. I like seeing things like that. Are you against collections or something?

I have a (much smaller) monorail setup and this is the kind of layout I dream about having some day. I like the monorail system better than trains because of how you can easily spread out the track in all 3 dimensions. That opens up all sorts of cool possibilities, as seen in this video.

Whoa! I absolutely love your monorail setup. I dream of having something as "modest" as that. Sweet.

At least you have a good starting point, and can expand from there. I am only just about to get the 'core' of what may become a starting point

I'm way behind!

Say, I have a favor to ask if you have it, and if you could take a picture of it: I have never seen the back cover/sleeve of the 6990 Monorail Transport System box with all the ideas LEGO always put on their boxes. I've searched the net without any luck. There are plenty of pics of the front and some of the inside cover, just not the back.

Anyway, 5/5 rating on your space monorail setup, I love it.

A bit! I feel the same way about LEGO, book and car collections; use them! (I don't get army building either.) But I collect many things, especially Japanese statues and figures. I'll have to post some photos in community one day.

Yeah, it's why I wish TLG would bring them back, but elevated trains would be good enough.

I much prefer your setup. That's the same monorail that my friend has.

I don't think this is too bad a setup, just the wrong part of it was filmed.

Anyone can make a monorail track that goes to the top of a window sill, but the bottom section with the other trains on it looked pretty cool - if I were that guy, I would have filmed the trains in action on that section of the layout.

Yes, I agree.

While the setup is awe-inspiringly large and complex IMO (for someone to have in their room, not talking about a BrickCon showing) the video itself is pretty awful, both in terms of quality/resolution and what was filmed. I would hope he takes more footage of his setup.

Thanks. :classic: I would like to expand it further but the track packs are becoming increasingly expensive these days. I got my sets a few years ago and the 6921 and 6347 prices have gone up quite a bit since then.

As for the sets, I think the 6990 and 6991 prices are still (relatively) reasonable on ebay. 6399, on the other hand, is considerably larger and goes for extremely high prices.

I didn't take these, but they were from the ebay auction where I got my second one. That set had some of the best box packaging ever, with multiple layers of trays showing off all the special parts.

Yes the track packs are really expensive, going from what I've been seeing on Bricklink and Ebay.

Yup the The 6990 and 6991 sets are still fairly reasonable, while the larger and less common 6399 is often around twice as much as a 6990 (more or less).

PERFECT, thank you! Now I can see what ideas LEGO gave everyone for the 6990 set.

I ordered a package on Bricklink, here was the description:

[used Complete] 6990 Monorail Transport System RARE ~ MANY EXTRAS - Pieces, box, and instructions all in good shape. INCLUDES accessory track (6347), monorail switch (2774), 2 straight short tracks (2670), 4 straight long tracks (2671) and 4 curve long tracks (2672). (x1) ..... $250.00 each = $250.00

It seemed like a reasonable deal, because in addition to the main 6990, it has the 6347 Airport Shuttle Accessory Track and some additional tracks.

I almost got a 6921 track pack in a seperate buy, but too much time passed and I missed out on that one. Still, I think I'll be off to a reasonable start with building a monorail.

My next target will be either a second 6990 set, and if I find a reasonable deal, the much-desired 6399 ^__^

Isn't having the monorail train going around in a circle (really big one ) enough?

As for the massive setup,

That is amazing! No wonder why when they came out I never could find any in the store

Not a bad setup either, not much planning involved, they had all the track and connected it as they went along

Just like me, I'm not really a layout person but for this you are going to need a huge town

Thx for sharing :classic:

Quite many ramp rails by which the train can change levels. I'm wondering if this guy also has the two space monorails (6990 and 6991). The ramp rails didn't come with the extension backs 6347 and 6921, so he or she must have many 6399s and probably 6990s and/or 6991s. Anyway, this layout is amazing!!

Yes, exactly.

I was looking at the Peeron inventory entry for the 5 monorail-related sets to see how many of each track piece came with.

In any case, he/she indeed must have many sets, regardless of which ones. I'm sure he/she had 6990 if not both 6990 & 6991.
