Start a Petition! We need it continued to fufil our LEGO Dreams

Sorry, Sir Wellington, but I think this decision is set in stone. They couldn't produce any more sets until 2011 if they started now. And they've probably already begun designing PoTC sets.

Of course, it'll be in flesh tones, so I'd probably only use the torsos and hats, but it might actually be cool! What are your thoughts on this?

It really is a worse case scenario, because we loose the very usable and interesting heads, and all the torsos that show that dreaded flesh tone.

What?

What happened to the imperial ship, bluecoats, ports ect....

I am stunned. Why would lego do this when themes like Powerminers, Ben 10, Space Police, and Atlantis continue? Other than city this is the most upsetting theme that could possibly end. If these sets are being outsold by others like the ones above then I have no hope for the future of the world. Not even a two year run? Looks like I'll have to pick up a brick beard bounty now instead of waiting. Well at least they warned us... :pir_bawling:

if they are going to discontinue castle as well, then i won't be buying lego for my kids (if i ever have any) what happen to originality?, when i was a kid there wasn't any license themes now there bringing in prince of persia and toy story that's all well and good, now its all bloody star wars..sad day for kids imaginations.

target better re stock pirate sets before the end of the year.

It says mid-2010, which suggests to me that we'll see some new sets for early 2010...

Steve

that sounds like wishful thinking to me.

i would hope so but i dont think we will see any more..

and i really dont get it.

why make all these new molds for just one year?

it makes no scense at all!

It means that the set will be off the stores shelves by summer. And I doubt that LEGO releases a wave with a life expectancy of only six months.

Darn. I'm not too surprised though; the ship hull design, while smart, was clearly an attempt to make as few parts as possible that'll be used well. Very similar to the Vikings hull; same front and back. Aside from that there's been a dearth of custom parts; the much loved palm trunk is one of the few that springs to mind. This all points to a short term theme. My big surprise parts-wise in regard to this theme was the cannon; I thought that part was long dead.

At least its given people like me a chance to pad out their pirate collection at a better price.

You know, I'm surprised no one has caught on yet. :pir-sceptic: Lego just acquired the Disney license, and Lego discontinues there pirate line by mid 2010... And what movie is coming out in 2011..... Yup, the 4th installment of "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie. lets put two and two together people. :pir-blush:

Yeah, I've had the same thought... and I don't like it. :pir_bawling:

With the termination of the castle and pirates theme I think I can slash my Lego budget for the first time in years.

POTC does not interest me at all. If this is were Lego is heading I will be very dissapointed in my Lego hobby. :pir-sceptic:

It sounds like I'm the only one not saddened by this news. I was looking forward to the new pirates theme until I saw the actual sets...and then I was severely disappointed. I was hoping for a huge leap forward in terms of creativity, like we've seen in the new space police line, but instead we mostly got a rehashing/redesigning of the old sets with very little originality. All in all I thought it was a very sub-par line and didn't buy a single set, even though the pirates theme was one of my favorite as a kid.

btw, some of you are almost certainly right when you say we should expect a Pirates of the Caribbean line soon

I don't really understand why LEGO would decide to end one of their own "evergreen" themes after just one wave of sets. Why not just discontinue making one of the other themes (like the Atlantis one) instead? Although we might get Pirates of the Caribbean sets instead, they will not be the same as these non-licensed ones.

Also, why bring back so many parts/make new ones (cutlass, musket, revolver, bridge, island, boat hull parts, masts, bandanas, peg legs, hook hands, etc.) just so that they could be used in only one wave of sets?

To hear upon this news sure make my heart sank in this very morning, with extreme disappointment. Although I don't really participate much in Pirates but I love collecting Pirates, and the current wave gave me the exact chance to buy lots of wonderful sets to start with, despite missing the earlier Classic Pirates. I really thought for a moment, that it could be possible to have at least one or two more waves, but never expected for the theme to end in just one!

I supposed the current Pirates 09, was meant and could be for the TLG marketers to test the global market, as in how well they captured, and it could be, they know that Pirates are one of the good selling themes, which is a fact. I strongly believed that TLG is fleshing its other themes, such as Power Miners and Space Police III targeted at much younger audience, or even wanted to maximise the theme fresh concept. In addition, with new action theme such as Altantis, which is similar to Aqua Raiders and other earlier ones, I think they are trying to push those relatively new themes out to the market.

Of course, not to mention that TLG has also acquired 4 Disney License themes to release both Duplo and System sets platform. To be honest, I am not a big fan of such licensed themes.

Anyway, to conclude, I feel that good themes which we all adore will likely to put on hold, since these themes are cash cow..

Sigh....

This is very bad news indeed. Pirates should be one of those every year themes like Castle and Space are.

We had a great new selection of maritime accessories and some awesome figs!

The sets were great and I can not think of anything negative aspects

Why get rid of a good theme? The other decent ones that are system based (excluding licenses) are only City and Castle

The other themes like Space Police while showing improvement are not up to par with these

I hope one day in the future we see Pirates return. There was so much potential for new sets :pir-sad2:

If pirates do return in 2011 they aren't necessarily going to be licenced. They might just plan on re-releasing pirates about the same time as POTC comes out, and then use the pirate poularity generated to boost sales without having to pay for a licence with Disney. But if pirates aren't going to return, I'll only forgive TLG if they replace it with LEGO ninjas.

This is a shame !! :pir_bawling:

Why do we have to suffer from themes such as power miners or agents - and another classic theme just disappears for no better reason than "wasn't designed to be an ongoing theme" ????

Will Lego ever care about the real needs of real customers (or even more about big spender AFOLs.... ?) ?

There had to be a reason.

1.- Like when starwars first came out, Lucasarts didn't want another space theme to compete with so Lego axed there own space line.

In this case the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie is coming out so my guess is Disney doesn not want another pirates theme to compete with. They want the whole theme devoted to themselves.

2.- Maybe, just maybe.... The Pirates theme wasn't as popular as many would like to think they were/are. TLC is not stupid. There not just going to axe a theme that makes them good profit, so either they didn't do as well as they thought, or they need to make room for a POTC theme.

As for the excuse of "wasn't designed to be an ongoing theme", i highly doubt that. My guess is at this time they obviously can't reveal if they are in fact going to make a POTC theme, so they just gave a win-dixie excuse.

The POTC 'cash-cow' licence seems to me the most obvious explanation. We get this news just a week or two after the official confirmation of the 4th movie? And just a few more weeks after the detailed AFOL discussions led by ambassadors asking fans what they would like to see in future lines?

To me it would seem highly cynical to bloat fan expectations and simultaneously churn out a whole lot of accessories like magnets, battlepacks, chess sets (which are usually the province of the licensed lines or evergreen themes any case), so perhaps the intention *wasn't* always for it to be a one-off wave of sets.

I also thought Lego's design and production turnaround time had been drastically reduced so if they knew the sets were selling well they could bump out further waves much more efficiently. Maybe sales were good, ie profitable, but not 'good enough' to warrant further investment. With a limited number of themes each year, maybe they thought one of the new ones was going to make more money, relatively.

It's a shame. I didn't think most of the sets were amazing this year (although the figs and accessories were unsurpassed) so I would have liked to have seen the direction the line was heading in.

Damn, this really sucks... The only use the TLC has to me now is making pieces for people to sell on bricklink. I haven't bought an actual set form LEGO in almost 10 years if it were not for the new Pirates line. Wow you suck a big one LEGO. Mabe POTC sets will come out. IF not then its bricklink all the way for me.

It's sad to see what could have been a great theme last for only a short while. :pir_bawling:

If the theme is selling like hot cakes, why would they discontinue it?!??!?!? :pir_wacko:

Unless there is going to be a POTC theme. :imperialguard_commander1:

Well I guess it's probably going to happen. I figured it is was bound to. :pir-hmpf_bad:

The pirate's theme will turn into humans versus skelies. :pir-sick:

I have enough of the stupid skelies from the castle line! :pir_mad:

On a lighter note, I think Captain Green Hair would make a great Captain Jack Sparrow. :pir-grin:

...I love this theme and really hate to think that it would take a license being applied to it for success-sake, but it's the best move for LEGO. ...I'll still buy them. Hopefully when the pirates make their return, they'll leave the decals and crazy high prices (600pieces=$100) on the ocean floor.

Ugh. I couldn't stand a POTC line for two reasons.

1)Megablox already did it. Very badly, in my opinion.

2)I disliked the movies anyway. Historically inaccurate and the actors annoyed me a bit in the last two films. I have to admit, though, it was pretty neat seeing a ship I've been on in the film. :pir_laugh2: (Interceptor-->Lady Washington)

I know Im not one of those big pirate fans but what the heck are you doing lego, I was hoping to start collecting this theme next year and now you mess it up.

If anyone from TLC is reading this please please don't do POTC, there will be no room for creativity and it will get so much less profit. The films are great but it completly dismisses the red vs blue from the past and there is no room for creativity when designing the sets. Disney will do what THEY want.

Anyway Im really sad about this and will at least try to get as many 2009 sets as possible.
