no_skill Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 (edited) Another question to LEGO: Why should I ever get excited about any new theme, seeing as there's at best a 50/50 chance of it being supported beyond one release? I also think this sums up my feelings well. The main reason I bought (heavily) into the present Pirates line is I figured it would be around for at least a few cycles, and I could finally have a chance to build up my collection. I LUSTED for the Legend BSB when it came out, but ultimately passed on it because there was no concurrent line to support it. Now it is very clear...why bother collecting a line when it's likely to get yanked after a single release? I'll be passing up a lot of cool new stuff now (like the SP III) because I fear they'll just be fad releases with no support or follow-on sustainment. Me no like. Pirates was helping to fill the void left by the disappearance of 9V trains. Wow, and I was just starting to feel it was an excellent time to be an AFOL! Disposable income will go elsewhere, I guess. RocketClone Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 The big question mark that rallies in my mind is that how can PM and city keep wopping out sets when Pirates gets only 1 try at it? its been days since i saw that post by Bonaparte and im STILL trying to figure that one out! Quote
Paradosis Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 (edited) This is crazy. *shakes head* Ok, I don't want to overstate things, but this is definitely a suprise. I haven't been around here for a couple months, because I've been dealing with some serious personal issues (divorce, moving, etc.). I come back, hoping to get back into Lego after some time off and take my mind off some problems. And one of the first things I find out about is that they're going to discontinue Pirates for a while. I'll admit that I wasn't absolutely in love with the 2009 Pirates sets, they seemed overpriced for what you got. But I thought they were a good first step, and looked forward to what might follow. One of my favorite themes back before my dark ages was Pirates, and I really liked the possibilities of following a Pirates line now that I am an adult and have much more money/freedom. And now it looks like that's not going to happen. Not with consistent, yearly/bi-yearly releases, anyway. Like others have said, I really have no interest in following a theme where I'm buying a half dozen sets, waiting 5 years, buying another half dozen sets, waiting another 5 years, etc. Edited September 24, 2009 by Paradosis Quote

This is why I'm not getting Space Police III. I was on the fence for a while, but the cancellation of Pirates pushes me off. Which is a shame, because some of the sets look awesome. Quote
Wout Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 For next year they release 620 Blue baseplate, 32x32 Pity there will no more pirates, but it is a nice add-on. No only white 32x32 for the battle of Hoth Quote

Rick Posted September 26, 2009 Posted September 26, 2009 It was on a Czech webshop's list of 2010 sets. Quote
starwarsfanatic Posted September 27, 2009 Posted September 27, 2009 Oh no! Pirates to end! Never! I hope that they don't make Pirates of the Caribbean sets. Pirates should count as a core theme. Quote

Yes, it does mean that the line is defunct. On the other hand, it gives people plenty of time to stock up on Pirates sets and figs while they still can. Everybody is looking forward, but I suspect that a lot of fans will regret not buying up what they can while they can. If you pass on those forts, let's not forget that they won't be around when you need/want them. I feel for you Pirates fans, but I wouldn't disregard the fact that this could very well be the last opportunity to stock up on Pirates sets and bricks at a good price for a very long time. If your MOCing a larger vessel or port town those figs may prove invaluable in the future. Quote

I agree, while I am ticked off at Lego for this move I am happy that I have time to stock up on sets and figs...Just bought 9 Cannon Battles at TRU with there buy 2 get 1 free Promo....The only time you can buy from TRU with out paying an arm and a leg Quote
Derfel Cadarn Posted September 28, 2009 Posted September 28, 2009 Its deffinitly a shame, but from what ive heard it will be back. I know everyone seems to be assuming they will do a POTC line and some people are complaining about that, but i dont believe that would be a bad thing. To be honest, i didnt buy the current sets for the model, i buy them for the parts, which im sure most do. So POTC sets would be great because im sure they will have lots of cool parts and i dought you would complain about Darkblue-coats. Quote

Eilif Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 I would like to thank the Ambassadors for this heads up. I am disapointed about the loss of Pirates, but as has been said by many other folks, we now have time to stock up, and we now know that it will probably be back in a few years. LEGO's stated strategy of a few evergreen themes and alot of other short term themes means that we as AFOL's will have to adjust in the following ways: -We have to accept that if we like a set with a particular vehicle, figure, etc. we need to get it and not wait for a similar set later. -We may also have to think long term and realize that certain themes may return in cycles. -We may have to be ok with shifting to a new theme or MOC'ing while we wait for the next incarnation of our favorite theme. These are not easy things, but LEGO has to be able to shift quickly in response to trends and be constantly introducing something "new" for the kids. I'm just glad that kids grow, so that LEGO is able to periodically re-introduce old themes as "new". Quote
David Thomsen Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 (edited) Here's something to ponder over... the face of this new minifig! Atlantis 8057 Underwater Scooter. Doesn't it look amazingly like they have the future of the Pirates range in mind when they designed that face? Huh? Huh? I know which set I'll be buying if I need an additional pirate for my crew... (Other than that, I'm not at all interested in Underwater Power Miners Atlantis) Edited October 9, 2009 by David Thomsen Quote

Rick Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 I have the idea these lines are developed independently to some extent. For example, the Atlantis line gets all new faces, whereas the City line is stuck with the same faces for years and doesn't even 'borrow' from other themes. So, I don't know whether we should get our hopes up. But it sure could be a new Pirate captain's face... Quote

So, I don't know whether we should get our hopes up. But it sure could be a new Pirate captain's face... Uncle Vernon's face has appeared in a couple of sets... and so has 'Sherpa Sangye Dorje' from set 7417. I think it's just that most faces are unsuitable for the City so they only borrow the most generic looking faces from other themes. I like to think that they're getting savvy about developing cross-themed pieces though, like the black corset that appeared more or less simultaneously in both MMV (castle) and Shipwreck Hideout (pirates). You can't say there wasn't some cross-theme co-ordination at work there. And some of the Prince of Persia pieces look perfect for Indiana Jones. This is all just wishful thinking until anything is proven, of course. But it only seemed like wishful thinking when I was hoping for a new Imperial Flagship... Jack Bricker Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 (edited) I just talked to a sales person at the local Lego store here in Bellevue, WA and they said that they will not be getting anymore pirates sets in and that he also thought that Lego has actually stopped manufacturing the Pirates line. So, what have the rest of you heard. I thought Lego said they would produce Pirates up until July but, now I am hearing that they have already discontinued the line. Rick Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 I guess terminating the line mid-2010 actually means stopping production by now. When the news was first announced, I assumed this to be the most likely course of action. You should probably see more sets disappearing from stores in the coming half year. Quote
Aquila D'oro Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 yeah i went all over two shopping centres today, there is next to nothing in store at the moment. I was talking to a checkout chick in one toy store and she just happend to have this years Lego catalogue...... the pirates theme isnt in it. Quote

That's indeed what I think will happen. They'll slowly disappear from stores and all be gone around mid 2010. Of course, the wonderful Imperial Flagship will still be there, not in the stores, but available via S@H, think positive Quote
