Lego did miss out on a decent opportunity, but there is plenty to make up for it. With Brickforge and Brickarms, you can make fully equipped Halo minifigs, and there are plenty of purist designs out there to copy your own sets for. The MB Halo items look to be made with a lot of specialized parts, and the one MB set I've ever had was extremely painful to put together, so I'll stick with my MOC'ed Warthog for now.

I've got five of the [smaller] Halo sets (the Warthog being the largest), plus the limited edition mail away Spartan. Huge fan of the Halo-verse (not a die hard gamer though), and not a LEGO purist as I love toys of all ranges. Not going to get into that whole issue, I'm just posting to say I'll probably shoot some review pics before long. Nothing too detailed, just a box pic and a few pics of the completed models. I haven't opened most of them yet, just a couple to play with the figs.

Are they good at all? I was planning to actually get some today

I really don't like MB but some of there ideas are pretty good especially their dragon line and of course Halo!

Lots of people in the world cannot afford real Lego, So think yourself lucky.

From my experience, Megbloks is quite expensive oln the shelves, but that might be based on opinion as well as fact

That's a joke :tongue::wink: ...right? :sceptic:

No.

But there are a lot of members who severly dislike MB or actually happen top love MB as much as Lego. People who like the MB can discuss them in this thread, along with others. I must admit though, having a Halo license was always going to be a winner because of its Xbox cult following. I've never owned an Xbox, but Halo as a brand is my favourite exclusive game on the Xbox to add a different experience of future warfare with a complex story. This must be the reason it is so popular. BTW there is an article in 'Flipside' youth magazine in the Uk actually saying that MB is a rip-off of Lego whilst reviewing the new Halo toys. Hows that for positive feedback?

A British magazine is calling Mega Bloks a rip off of Lego? Sheesh, I guess journalists are ignorant the world over. The plastic building brick system started out in England with Kiddiekraft Toys. At least MB comes from the Commonwealth, and thus has some legitimacy. If they wanted to accuse a company of ripping off Lego, they should have chosen Enlighten, which just celebrated its 45th anniversary last year. Mega at least waited till the patents expired and the brick and plate became public domain.

Ok, lets all agree to disagree.

If it was cheaper I would be reviewing a Halo MB set, however it can't find a set I want to buy.

Flipside is a blast from the past, used to read it in the school Library (that and BBC Focus, Time and National Geographic), thought they researched things a bit better.

It never hurts to read another company's building :classic: instructions. You never know when you will find a technique that you will gladly incorporate in your creative toolbox.

People, if you wanna buy something that appeals to you, just do it. There is no need in feeling bad.

You are brilliant.

You sir, win for all eternity.

But it still feel bad cause i'm spending that $ for megabloks instead of lego.

Why? Mega Bloks can make sets just as good as LEGO, just with cheaper plastic. They're still both building block sets, and you shouldn't fell bad at all. In fact, I was thinking about getting the Warthog set. The vehicle in the game is awesome. And I can use it for LEGO figures, as well. They're compatible.

That's why they're building blocks.

I've seen the HALO sets at Target, and they're very nice. I bet LEGO couldn't make anything much better.

I honestly don't think the MB sets look half bad. I'm still slightly upset that LEGO doesn't have the license, but I'll get over it. I was actually thinking about buying one or two of the sets actually.

Ive actually been looking at the Halo sets and thought that i might need one myself. But the quality of the blocks still look shoddy and none of their sets ever appealed to me personally.

Also, yes, LEGO did seem to miss an opportunity, but then i think they wouldnt have poseable figs. Then i start thinking maybe LEGO should make their figs more poseable. Everytime I put my figs on a surfboard...something seems wrong.

Oh good, I'm not the only one

That Brute Chopper set is okay

Pics

I much more enjoyed the UNSC Wolverine

More Pics

I also scored the UNSC Gremlin, which is also a great little set. Sort of GI Joe-esque. (Sorry, no pics of that one)

Hopefully I can scrape up the Locust Vs. Gausshog set that's out there as well. And apparently, there's more on the way for March. Can't wait for the Wraith tank myself, and I'm hoping the line stays around long enough that they'll eventually make a Scarab deino2.gif

Awesome! I actually didn't even know these new sets were coming. I've been hoping for more, but hadn't heard anything about the continuation of the line 'til now. And all that I found at the Target was that single Brute Chopper, but now I'll probably go check out a few more Target stores later.

I'm not very familiar with a lot of these vehicles from Halo Wars. That Wolverine and Gremlin look pretty cool though. I'm really into the Halo universe, but just a casual gamer, and I only play multiplayer. I'm most excited about the new weapons (geeking out over the MA5 rifle), figs, and the Covenant vehicles (those are my favorite to use when I play). The Wraith will be nice to have.

Same here. I only knew what these new vehicles were by looking them up in the Halo Encyclopedia. I got into the universe by picking up the novels first and the games later, so my exposure has always been mainly from a storyline perspective. I JUST got the Xbox360 so I'm trying to catch up with the games. I finally played Halo 3 last weekend after avoiding storyline spoilers for 2 years, so now I'm looking forward to Halo Wars. A lot more-so now that I already have sets of some cool vehicles that are in the game.

But you don't have to know anything about Halo to dig these sets. All you have to do is like military vehicles and building toys and you're golden. deino2.gif

Although I won't be getting any of them, I have to say that the Megabloks Halo Wars sets are possibily some of the finest products the company has ever made, especially since they seem to be largely brick built rather than relying on tons of oversized, overdetailed molds. The camo-effect on the bricks looks particularly interesting, and the figures and vehicle designs seem fairly true to the video game versions.

What I want to know is if anyone has got the instructions fo a MB Halo set and try to make a Lego counterpart. Sure all the pieces might not be the ame but it can be compensated. To be honest MB's design might be somewhat similar to what Lego would've done anyways.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say MB Halo minifigs are better than minifigures. I mean, more poseable, better detailing, etc. Lego has stuck with the tradition minifig design, and they don't want to change it. That's fine, but I hand it to MB for having decent figures(not quality wise tho)

I agree and yet disagree slightly. Comparing the LEGO Minifig to a Mega Bloks figure is like comparing apples and oranges.

Minifigs are entirely constructable, interchangeable, and their component parts work fully with other parts in the LEGO system. (Minifig legs used for robot fingers for example). That, and the design philosophy is totally different. A Minifig is more of an abstract representation of a character or person. It's great to see a familiar character or vocation LEGO-ized into a minifig. It's what gives them their charm and collectability and makes them special. I could really care less about amassing an army of Mega Bloks SPARTANs or UNSC Marines, but if they were Minifigs, I couldn't get enough of them. deino2.gif

Mega Bloks figures are pretty much just tiny action figures. They are proportioned closer to a real human, have more points of articulation, and impressive paint and sculpting detail for something their size. For me, one of each is good enough. (plus crews for the vehicles of course  )

The sets look fine. But I really concern about quality. I think MB sets in here are merely 1/2 of the cost, and if the plastic quality is not good I doubt it would be worth it.

The minifigs look completely out of place. I dunno, if I wanted to play/buy dolls I would just do it. the figs kind of ruin the buildable toy feeling. (And imho many licensed LEGO figs have the same issue)

LEGO better be careful though, since MB can only use old parts they are less prone to using the huge inflexible parts that LEGO sometimes makes the mistake of abusing...
