Oky Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 That base looks expensive though. It's awfully tall for something made of LEGO bricks! You've obviously not been around the Star Wars or City forums much! Quote
Algernon Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 That base looks beast. Awesome throwback to the grand Space designs of old. Quote
KDog Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 (edited) I was bummed out when I got the most recent LEGO catalogue and it had only two Space Police sets pictured, on one page. (Raid VPR and Smash 'N Grab) It didn't have any of the sets from the second half of 2009. It definitely feels like this line is on its way out. Edited March 23, 2010 by KDog Quote

Why would it have any of the sets from the second half of 2009? We're not there yet! The line might be on its way out, true, and it's a pity. But if so, it's certainly ending on a good note. Quote
Algernon Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 ...we're getting an entirely new wave of sets that haven't even hit shelves yet... how did you get to the conclusion that the theme is on it's way out? If anything it's vitals are better than ever, we had no reason to even expect a second wave. Quote
KDog Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 Why would it have any of the sets from the second half of 2009? We're not there yet! Uh, check your calendar. ;-) ...we're getting an entirely new wave of sets that haven't even hit shelves yet... how did you get to the conclusion that the theme is on it's way out? If anything it's vitals are better than ever, we had no reason to even expect a second wave. We know we're getting three more sets in 2010. I thought I read that those would be the final Space Police sets. Even so, Space Police got very little space in the latest catalogue, which makes it seems like an afterthought. Quote
gunm Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 Where did you read that Space Police III was ending? I don't think the future of this particular series was mentioned yet. I was thinking we'd know for sure the second half of the year...? Quote

Skulls_Eye_Schooner_Sailor Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 You've obviously not been around the Star Wars or City forums much! Oh lawdy... how could I forget about that Death Star. It's a solid chunk of brickyness! And also 100s of dollars! The tower though, that is a bit different since it is architecture and not in mini-fig scale. That's got to be one of the tallest Lego sets though, right? I mean, it looks bigger than any previous space bases, or police stations, firehouses, etc... Quote
Aanchir Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 Uh, check your calendar. ;-) Doi. Not only did I misread the quote, but I typed the date back out without noticing the mistake. >.< Quote
Hound Knight Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 well, they're real alright What I meant was that the new windscreen was proof that it's a real set. Quote
Algernon Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 What I meant was that the new windscreen was proof that it's a real set. Oh yes. Your point is greatly enhanced by the condesending wink emote.  ...sorry, one of my pet peeves... anyway, to be honest I wouldn't be surprised if 2010 is SPIII's final year, but I really don't see any evidence that it is. The reason why it got little space in the latest catalogue is because there are only two new sets available right now. The same is true of Power Miners. Just seems like we're jumping the gun here. :P Quote
Carefree_Dude Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 I think this is the final year for space police III because we only got 5 sets. Last year we got 7 regular sets and 2 limited edition sets. I wouldn't be surprised if there is another space theme next year though. Quote
CP5670 Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 I would expect SP3 to end after this summer's wave. Most of the non-licensed sci-fi/action themes in recent times have had a two year life. This is actually better than it used to be in the 90s, when space themes lasted for only one year (in terms of when new sets were released). Let's just hope SP3 gets replaced by another, equally good space theme. Quote
Scorpion Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 Let's just hope SP3 gets replaced by another, equally good space theme. On the contrary, I hope it gets replaced by a better Space theme. It wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't as good as space themes from the early 90's... Quote

It wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't as good as space themes from the early 90's... I would like to see a return to a space exploration theme, not bound to one planet or law enforcement. Aliens and enemies could continue to be a part of the story, of course, but more as a general threat to the exlporers. Quote
gunm Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 Yes, I suppose if history is the guide then SPIII is probably done this year. I do hope they keep the interesting alien minifigs though. They are interesting and cleverly done. Quote

It wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't as good as space themes from the early 90's... I would disagree. It's at least as good as Spyrius, which is one of the best Space themes I recall from my heyday. Back then, of course, I thought every new Space theme was the coolest thing ever, but Spyrius is the only one that seems truly superb in retrospect. Blacktron II was also good, but I kind of missed out on that, and even now it doesn't seem quite as flavorful as Spyrius or Space Police III. A return to the Space themes of the early 90's would also imply a return to single-faction themes, and I can't say I'd like that very much. Quote

Yes, I think the concept and backstory of SP3 is actually better and more well developed than any of the old themes. The sets themselves have been very hit-or-miss, ranging from the outstanding Galactic Enforcer to the forgettable Gold Heist, but you could also say that about most of the old themes. Only a few of them had consistently good sets across the whole theme. Quote

What? Early 90's Space allways had 3 factions: 1 Space Police (I & II), 1 "bandit" (Blacktron I & II) and 1 civilian line (Futuron, M-Tron, Ice Planet 2002)! Where did you get the idea of "single-faction themes" in early 90's Space? Edited March 25, 2010 by Scorpion Quote

Where did you get the idea of "single-faction themes" in early 90's Space? Each faction was marketed as a separate theme, and the sets typically only included one faction (the Space Police sets of both previous eras included Blacktron figs as prisoners but no Blacktron vehicles). So they were essentially "single-faction themes", even if there was more than one Space theme on sale each year. Quote
Skulls_Eye_Schooner_Sailor Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 Does anyone know why there's no review for that 09 rover, or any of the '10 sets? Not only that, I am shocked that many of the great space sets of the 90s do not even have reviews! Quote
Oky Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 I mean, it looks bigger than any previous space bases, or police stations, firehouses, etc... Uhm, have you ever heard of 10197 Fire Brigade? Just kidding, I get your point. Even though previous bases were much taller than this, they relied heavily on raised baseplates, giant windows, BURPs, etc. It's good to see a decently sized base that is mostly made out of bricks. As for the Eiffel Tower, yes, it's one of the tallest sets ever. It's definitely up there with Lady Liberty. (pun intended) Does anyone know which one is taller? Doi. Not only did I misread the quote, but I typed the date back out without noticing the mistake. >.< Double fail! Does anyone know why there's no review for that 09 rover, or any of the '10 sets? Because Siegfried is too lazy to update the index. If by "rover" you mean 5979 Max Security Transport, there already is an excellent review for that. You just gotta search for it. If you have some of those old unreviewed sets, feel free to review them! About SP3 ending, yes, it's probably dying. Not only because it wasn't featured in the recent catalog much, but mostly because of the short life span of action themes these days. Oh yeah, and emoticons for the win! Quote

Not only that, I am shocked that many of the great space sets of the 90s do not even have reviews! You're welcome to do the 90's reviews! As regards to the 2010 set reviews, you can't review a set unless you've bought it...(save for the admins like CopMike on here, which seem to be able to get the impossible...) Quote
