Space Odysseyer Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 Anyone seen these prototypes yet? Anyone who read BrickJournal Issue 6, Volume 2 saw it. Quote
krystalKING Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 (edited) Anyone seen these prototypes yet? I don't think brick journal will approve of that! But the concept artwork is incredible! I really like this the grey and trans-red base thing. Edited October 17, 2010 by krystalKING Quote
Artanis I Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 Anyone seen these prototypes yet? There are some awesome looking space/underwater prototypes that never made it (and some that were adapted), some parts that were never released in that colour (trans-red & black dome, blue monorail, purple castle wall, trans-orange jetpack), many parts that I've never seen... we can only dream. It's a bit disappointing to see how dumbed-down some of the 2009 SP3 sets ended up. The Max Security Transport should've kept those killer wheels! Quote
user Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 Anyone seen these prototypes yet? Why did lego have to ruin these?!?! These set designs are possibly some of the coolest lego ships I've ever seen I literally stared at the space truck for two minutes with my jaw dropped. and those alien concepts are beyond awesome! Slizer had a very daft punk look and squidman's head looks like something straight out of a Tim Burton movie. And many of those helmets like the spyrius looking robot and Snake's respirator look perfect for cyberpunk or apoc creations. Not to mention originally there were a couple human bad-guys and they where going to make nnew feet molds for squid and frenzy and a new torso design with two heads and a tentacle arm. I have to say the only things I don't like is what looks like a zombie version of Leela from futurama and Kranxx's head and the skull twins helmet. Quote

The truck prototype is awesome, but its amount of detail and size is at the same time what makes it cool and what would make it inviable. With Star Wars around there would have been no way for TLG to sell it at a price that would give them a profit with such amount of detail would require for that set. Yeah, it is awesome as a prototype but reality hit and they had to adapt it for a lower price. Should be cool inspiration for MoCs though. Quote
Lordofdragonss Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 I can't stop laughing when I saw who is the bad alien in one oh this sets! Also this minifigs! They are so beautiful! Quote

I have to say the only things I don't like is what looks like a zombie version of Leela from futurama and Kranxx's head and the skull twins helmet. Matter of opinion. I personally think many of these sets-- the Space Truck, the prelim Gold Heist set, and the SP ship from Hyperspeed Pursuit in particular-- look cluttered. IMO they have too much detail packed into a tiny space, and it keeps you from being able to appreciate the overall shapes of any of the vehicles. I'm definitely happy with the version of the Hyperspeed Pursuit and Space Truck Getaway we got. Gold Heist, not so much, but I still would prefer a more enclosed version of the current set to the weapon-overloaded version in that folder. I would like to get a subscription to Brickjournal, but it's very expensive, and I don't know if I'd be able to appreciate all the content enough to make it worth my while. It'd be cool if Brickjournal would periodically release compilations-- for instance, "Best of LEGO Space" compiling all the articles related to Space themes, sets, and MOCs. But even then, that would have the issue of becoming out-of-date as new articles appeared, and I'm sure a subscription would be much more economical than buying a new compilation every now and again. I love that first concept art image by Brian Ellis. Really epic. Anyone from the BIONICLE community will of course recognize Brian Ellis as the one who illustrated the serialized "Mata Nui Saga" on BIONICLE.com during the first half of this year, and clearly his talents extend far beyond the scope of BIONICLE. prateek Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 I love this and this. They look so badass. If these were the actual sets, they would be sitting on my desk right now. Quote
snefroe Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 first of all, i find it interesing to see some sets/ideas/themes that just did not make it. sure, there are many parts that i would love to have had, especially in different colors. Some prototypes, like the Blacktron base, is a great parts pack, even though the model itself is crap. I guess this set lost out to the actual Blacktron base, that, imo, is one of the best sets ever. "Sea people" looks highly intruiging. i would have loved green parts, the models, however seem to be very early designs... and don't look very interesting. it looks to me like a step between the older aquanauts theme en the first Alpha sets... I like the exploriens ship too, not sure if these parts are purple or just dark grey... a shame these designs didn't make it... even though they lack detail... The grey space base with its trans red windows is intresting as well. Some reaaaaally great parts in there... the space police sets dont look like prototypes to me though... they're quite detailed and stickered... Quote
Aanchir Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 the space police sets dont look like prototypes to me though... they're quite detailed and stickered... Note, though, that most of the stickers and detail on the Space Police prototypes consists of stickers or printed pieces from other themes. A lot of the stickers are Exo-Force stickers, for instance-- they weren't specially designed for these models. The reason they're included is just to ensure that the prototypes express the overall impression that the final set ought to have. Meanwhile the "Sea People" theme seems (from my perspective) to be what became the Aquaraiders subtheme of Aquazone. Some of the vehicle designs may also have inspired the Stingrays subtheme. Quote

Tony Almeida Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 I love this and this. They look so badass. If these were the actual sets, they would be sitting on my desk right now. You wonder why they didn't stick to that original prototype, it was superior to the massive fail that it became as Gold Heist. Quote
Algernon Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 This would have been the coolest set LEGO's come out with in years. Small but beautiful. I really wish LEGO had stuck with these prototypes. Quote
Aanchir Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 This would have been the coolest set LEGO's come out with in years. Small but beautiful. I really wish LEGO had stuck with these prototypes. I agree, I like this prototype better than the one linked in the previous post. The previous one seems pretty cluttered, possibly moreso than the actual set. Yes, it closes up the gaps in the cockpit, but is it worth the cost? The one you linked, though, seems to be a very early prototype, and doesn't exactly fit in with the Space Police III sci-fi aesthetic we ended up with. The use of propellors and turbine-driven jet engines feels at odds with the rockets that seem to propel most of the finalized sets. The colors also aren't as exciting, even though the one you linked looks like an earlier prototype before the Space Police III color scheme was finalized. Overall, I am not a big fan of the Gold Heist set, but I dislike it because if flaws in its functionality, not its aesthetics. Aesthetically, it's pretty great IMO, but the dreadfully loose hinged parts (the front of the cockpit, the roof of the cockpit, and all the engines) as well as the largely-ineffective "grabbing" function detract from it greatly. Just my opinion, a'course. Quote
Peppermint_M Posted December 25, 2010 Posted December 25, 2010 Well, it looks like the space police have hauled in their last ne'er-do-well tracked down one last missing hyper-purse and caught their final miscreant doing 500 in a 300 zone. Space Police 3 is finished, now it's time for the Aliens to have their day! Quote
Henchmen4Hire Posted December 25, 2010 Posted December 25, 2010 -Man... anyone know if there are instructions on how to build that crazy sexy Space Truck? Please? Someone at TLC please post them? Lol, luckily it doesn't look too hard since it's mostly made up of the container. That thing would have been an instant-buy! -The Gold Heist prototype looks brutal! Look how many cannons that ship has! Why would anyone mess with the police when they ride around armed to the teeth like that! -Love the concept art for the minifigs! We need more figures with mohawks please! -I'm not disappointed with the changes they made to the villain's vehicle for the Hyperspeed Pursuit, I like the beefier look of the turbines in front and it looks like an easy conversion. Plus, the missiles shoot really hard! Such a joy to actually be able to break LEGO walls with the missiles. And no more Space Police?!??!? Aw come on! I even started building more vehicles for the baddies because I wanted a huge Space Police display! :( Quote
Cinderbike Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 Cool prototypes. I really like this one: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/jamesster/Space-Prototypes/2.bmp I managed to pick up Smash N' Grab for $8 (including tax!) due to it being in a damaged box. A great find if I do say. It's worth it for the purple pieces and trans-red visors alone. My SPI minifig lost his years ago, with the spare in this set I can have complete SPI, II, and III officers again, yay! Quote
krystalKING Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 While it's not very interesting,I thought it was worth posting here.I was going through my figs today and found that my gold heist officer is slightly different,he has a black neck mark and his armor has black highlights instead of white! user Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 Man every time somebody digs up this topic it makes me even more aggravated that TLG had to change these sets so much!!! Quote
Henchmen4Hire Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 Yarrr! I keep pawing at that space truck, oh what could have been Quote
Oratsu Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Yarrr! I keep pawing at that space truck, oh what could have been Lego Revelution FTW but I dont really like the space police its just not as gritty and awesome as some of the others Quote
Algernon Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Goodbye Space Police. You will be missed. But I am perfectly okay with your replacement. Quote
benhead Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Whew, just in time!I managed to get all the space police sets!Which is rare, usually there are only 3-4 sets in a theme that I like. The sp base,is`nt very neeto by the way!Its quite fragile, the sideways garage door construction is a bad decision,it weakens the whole structure. This set was not worth $80!Which is why I waited till the after christmas sales and got it for $40 instead(lol!) Oh and the something-something`s pit stop set, looked horrible so I did`nt get that one,but other than that. The space limo is built really well, its in my top 3 favorite. Why are`nt these sets modular?Once you have the big spaceship, the littler ones should have been able to dock in or on it. Just a small rant, there are a couple missing sets left out in my opinion. There should have been a landing dock for the big space police ship that would connect to the back side of the hq set!A villians base,it seems to me that it would look like a space bikers bar.And a jail tube transport ship, that would carry at least 8 tubes and look like a rounder edged space hover truck(1940`s style milk truck). It was a little fragile, but I thought SP Central was an amazing set. I love the break room and the garage. The sniffer frog was pretty funny and the radio tower was a nice touch. Jawson is an incredible figure. I can't believe that the final SP sets were only available from S@H for half a year. Much shorter life than most Lego sets. I wonder if that'll jack up the secondary market prices on those a few years down the road. Quote
