Hello, all!

I had built a City-scale soda shop for Rossville, but I couldn't make the interior look good; there was just not enough space. So, I decided to finally try building on the modular/CC scale (it's smaller than most, but I followed the guidelines on LEGO.com). Now, keep in mind, this is my first attempt at such a scale, and I don't really have anything creatively new. But please give me your feedback.

Exterior (I don't have enough dark bley tiles to finish the sidewalk yet, but that will soon change):

Interior (my wife wanted to create the first customer, so there aren't any minifigs in it just yet):

Cute little shop. There have been some ice cream shops/trucks MOCs with an cone on top. Perhaps you could think of something similar to put on top of your soda shop (like a big can or something). The red and white tiled floor is a nice touch.

Agreed. One or two of these guys with a few extra parts for a handle would make a good mug or cup.

This is the exact size of buildings I wish Lego would make for the modular building series. I would definitely buy a bunch of them to build a street, but with the current $150 a pop for modular buildings, it isn't too cheap...

Nice Moc! :classic:

That's a great MOC, Mariko!

I really  it!

Especially the interior looks very well designed and realistic! :oh:

I agree with Rick that you should add some tumbler(s) or some other symbols on top of the shop in order to that you can see from far away that there is a soda shop.

Very well done!

Nice Job,

Very charming. To my eye it seems that the facade could use a minor change. Either the middle white section could match the outside white sections, or either it or the outside section or the pillars could have some color to them. Perhaps the round white colum pieces could be red.

This is a minor suggestion however, and this is a very nice MOC, especially since it is your first. You can't go wrong with 16x16!

I have to say I really love the interior. The stools and counter area are great and the soda taps are great. I will have to use that in the pub I hope to build soon.

I was wondering though why you chose to make studded sets and counters and tiled floors and sidewalks? Just curious because this reversal of the "classic" norms seems to have really become big in the last couple of years (especially with sidewalks thanks to the Modular Houses series - Cafe Corner, etc). I have not seen a lot of studded countertops and seats before but it certainly makes them much easier to use for accessories. Of course that's why I always prefer studded sidewalks, so figs and accessories can go anywhere.

In any case, very nice work.

Thanks, everyone! I'm glad you like it so much!

I considered putting tumblers or something on the top, but ran across a few problems. First, I didn't have the pieces I needed; second, it might have made the place look like a liquor store. I did make a "Soda" sign out of SNOT letters, but I didn't like how it looked as much.

tedbeard, I made the counter tops and the seats studded so that minifigs and accessories could be placed there (also, I didn't have enough pieces to make them tiled, so I couldn't, even if I had wanted to). I usually prefer studded sidewalks and floors for the same reason as you, but something about the smooth, tiled look really interested me. I did, however, use plates behind the counter, so that the soda jerk could stay in place.

Eilif, I originally had dark red tiles in the middle section, and I may put those back. I'll have to try replacing the white column pieces with the red ones, though.

Yes. I agree with this. Some smaller sets like a doctor's office (with the moulded manual wheelchair I really want!), a small post office, barber shop, etc would be great.

By the way, great little MOC Mariko! Nice interior design. Just needs some minifigs to bring it to life!

I think taller would be better. And maybe just a bit more color in the walls (light grey or tan). And use a different color for the window and door frame. The red just sticks out too much.

Other than that, nice work. I like the sign on top and the red and white awning.

I love it, I love it, I love it!

May I steal borrow this design? Its so cute and small that any modular city can house one.

PS: What would you think if you put on a custom made sticker that said "Soda Fountain" or "Candy Shoppe"?

I have a few responses to people, but first I would like to present the finished interior:

shoppe.jpg

Brickstarrunner-- by all means, feel free to borrow the design! If you use it in any publicized displays or anything, credit would be nice

Also, I had considered the custom sticker, but I lack the materials to create one.

Athos--do you mean taller as in more levels, or taller as in more bricks on the one level? In either case, I kind of wanted to be a cute little shop.

lifeinplastic,I had actually tried doing a post office before, but it didn't pan out; I felt that the features I wanted to include (backroom, sorting area, packaging area, etc.) would be too many for a 16x32 baseplate, and I'd have to do the full 32x32. I simply don't have enough regular bricks to build on the full-sized modular scale yet.

tedbeard, I remembered the other reason for the tiling on the inside: when I use the 2x2 plates, they often come loose from the floor when I move minifigs into different positions.

Thanks again, everyone! I never imagined the shop would be met with this sort of enthusiasm!

Well, I just completed my second modular building (an upgrade of my old Rossville Town Hall), and pictures of it will be coming up soon. But before I post that, I wondered if there were any more thoughts on Pop Fizkin's Soda Shop (so have I named my first modular building)? Particularly, does anyone have thoughts on the interior now that minifigs are present?

this is a beutiful little shop. love the outside facade and the tiled floor is really effective as well. With the minifigs in makes it look very nice and adds life to it

I absolutely love the fridge with the glass door against the wall. Everything down to the vented pieces you used on the sides. THat's an excellent touch. As for the outside, I really like it the way it is. The soda cylinder pieces you used look great.

Your attention to detail is great, it really looks like a set LEGO would produce.
