blueandwhite Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 I am amazed by all the people calling this set <insert that tiresome argument> (and a bit pissed, yes). I think you guys should re browse brickset a little bit a look at the old sets. <insert that tiresome argument> ? Comparred to what ? Face it, old sets where crapy comparred to the new ones we have, especially when it comes to design. Yes, it can be less detailed that some of the stuff you'll find around on brickshelf, but the price is definitly not the same. For someone that visits airports a lot, I can guaranty this looks much more like a real airport that anything lego came with before. Now I assume that this is directed (at least, in part) to persons such as myself. As to the matter of juniorization... This set is <insert that tiresome argument> in my opinion. If you feel differently, that's great. I suppose in this case its best that we agree to disagree. Personally, I prefer the many of the earlier airports. Sure, they may not be as detailed (owing to fewer specialized bricks) as more recent sets, but a healthy variety of basic bricks and plates makes it far easier to build or create your own variations. This airport has alot of glass (which is nice), but there is a noticeable absence of basic elements which are quite useful for MOCing. Look at 6597/10159. Allthough its not as detailed as this year's airport, the larger quantity of basic bricks make this set easier to convert into something new or original. It was the strong mix of basic and specialized bricks that made this set stand out to me. A set needs a good mix of both. Later. Quote
gylman Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 While I am not enthused about this set, the complaint about lack of basic bricks to me seems specious. Who here does not have enough basic bricks from their spares bins to do whatever they want to make this set better? The argument about <insert that tiresome argument> pieces is more reasonable. However, I think the airplane certainly looks much slicker than the airplanes of olden days, and interior detail is superior to that of the olden days. The airport itself has more detail than previous airports. I have mixed feelings about the big glass pieces. Yes, they are "<insert that tiresome argument>" and don't make for fun building. However, they do look more realistic than older airports. My major knock against this set is that it costs too much. 6597, currently available in stores as 10159, gives MUCH more bang for the buck. If this was a 50$ set, it would be perfect for what it is, and you could buy two of them to create an airport that would be better than 6597. For now, as a building experience and as a parts pack, 10159 is superior. $0.02 EDIT: oh yes, and the figs suck. Quote
KimT Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 Thanks for the review yoda. I must say that I am impressed :oD This set is more cool than I had imagined. Having seen the plane close up, changed my mind about it. I don't think the wings or the large bricks are a problem or <insert that tiresome argument>. In fact they are cool and adding a smooth surface to the plane *satis* . As yoda said the only problem is the landing gear that really sucks *sick* . As for the airport itself I think is ok. It could do with severe modifying, but hey they (TLC) have to do something to keep the set as cheap as possible and one is allowed to modify the sets ;) Great review - great set KimT Quote
KMOI Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 Not only that, kimt, look at that attention to detail! Wowsers! :oD I would have loved this when I was little, I just know it. The attention to detail is just beyond phenominal. I just love how the airport is basically a normal sized one, but shrunk down to just have one of everything. Just spectacular. Absoltely stunning. :) Thanks for another great review with great pics, Yoda! Quote
Hobbes Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 Well I've crossed a couple of airports that do look a lot like this one actually Yeah, CDG for example ;) I think the new airport was made to fit in the city theme, of course. So it looks like a city airport (although I still think it need walls...). 6597/10159 looks more like a "caribbean island airport", or Mauritian for that matter ;) Back in the 80s and 90s cities/city theme didn't have that "steel city look" like today. Everything looked like holidays, vacation and fun at the beach. So the airport was made to fit in there. The only thing I don't like is the tower, looks crappy. Other than that it was a nice looking airport. Both have their right to exist, I think, but it's a bit disappointing TLC didn't make a bit more out of the new airport (and I'm not talking juniorisation). I can't help it but it looks unfinished to me... Quote
blueandwhite Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 While I am not enthused about this set, the complaint about lack of basic bricks to me seems specious. Who here does not have enough basic bricks from their spares bins to do whatever they want to make this set better? This is certainly true of most AFOLs (including myself). With a collection of about 100,000 bricks, I certainly can't claim any sort of shortage. Still, when reviewing a set, I choose to focus solely on the elements included with that particular set. Afterall, reviewing a set and reviewing a set in the context of one's collection are two very different things. Remember, most AFOLs didn't start out with large collections. For me, it took over twenty years of LEGO collecting to amass a decent collection. I remember when I was younger, and building required a great deal of resource management. When a set lacked a solid assortment of bricks, I found it dissappointing as it made building difficult. As a child, variety and versatility were key elements in judging a set. This still holds true today. Later. Quote
gusmoore17 Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 As everyone in here, I shall thank Yoda for this great reviews he does. Congratulations!!!! 1.- It is true that the older airports were made of bricks and that the one from this year is made more of structures and <insert that tiresome argument> pieces than ever, but I want to point out the fact that this set looks realistic, very very very realistic. Nowadays the airports are constructed but nothing more than big metal structures and even bigger glass walls. So I am really happy with this building, because of all the functions and details that it features and the plane is just astonishing, it is great. And for those who complain about the wings, let me tell you that them look terrific with this set!!! A little actualization doesn't affect anyone. 2.- Only 5 minifigs??????? Come on, TLC has been reducing the number of minifigs in the City sets every year!!!!!! That's not fair in anyway!!!! Also, What about the girls????? Are the Lego Cities becoming gay (with all the respect, this is only an opinion)????? At least one pretty airport girl wouldn't harm anyone!!! 3.- I can't wait to buy it!!!!!!!! :') Quote
Evil Willy Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 Wow! That is a great review you have put up there! Its not everyone who would take time to take pics for us here...But anyways I think like a lot of other people that it is highly *I wanted to say that this set contains a lot of big pieces but didn't want to take the time to write it all, so I used the word "<insert that tiresome argument>" instead*...I would never buy that set just because of the fact that I realy ont want any town, City whatever...Im a pirate guy and so these parts are of absolutly no use to me. But its fun to see this because its as close as ill get to seeing it in my whole life probabley :D I believe I probabley made this whole post for no reason for the next guy who will post will say something along the lines of "Good review, Thanks!"....Ohh boy am I babling now. Is that even how you right (Edit: haha I wrote right..Its actually write, and yes I actually read my whole post over again) babling? I doubt it...Well you should buy the Black seas barracuda for I dont have it so send it to me. That would be the best idea, I think? wait I dont know maybe the El Dorado fortress of Skulls eye schooner...Who know? Get me a present heres my adress... William Poulin 236, de l'Esplanade Granby, Quebec J2g 6V4 Canada Thanks. Ps:Useless waste of time. Quote
gylman Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 Willy - are are turning into Mr. Phes junior? :-D Quote
Starwars4J Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 I probabley made this whole post for no reason for the next guy who will post will say something along the lines of "Good review, Thanks!" Good review, thanks! ;) Actually, I really like the review, though I don't personally like the airport (I mean if we want realism, other types of models, or even Megablocks, with their more realistic...and yet less-realistic pieces would work better. To me, Lego is about creating realistic things out of very simple parts. Anyway, I have to say I love the passenger with the grin and stubble. Anyone know if he comes in other (less expensive) sets as well? He'd make a great side-kick :-D Quote
Evil Willy Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 Ohh im happy! People have read my post! Willy - are are turning into Mr. Phes junior? Possibly considering our huge interest in LEGO Pirates.. Quote
Shadow Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 Like they say, a picture is worth a 1000 words. I have to admit, the 15 or so pictures were better than a long slew of text. Ok... on to my evaluation. IMO this set looks good. Contrary to the many complaints (i.e: Worse than I thought it would be, still going to pick it up.- I am dissapointed.) the Airport looks promising. Nice plane, revolving doors, (For multiple uses) a tower, figs, and a small car. Although my interests lie with Castle, I would buy this set if I was a town junky (At a reduced price of course) to expand my collection. *satis* Overall rating: 7/10 Quote
Evil Willy Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 IMO this set looks good I would buy this set if I was a town junky (At a reduced price of course) to expand my collection. Ahh but if it was truly great than everyone would buy it! And if you were a town maniac...And still didnt buy it unless at a low price than it must be pretty bad. For if there was a Pirate set I wouldnt really want it better suck a lot..and none of them do. But this set...Does. IMO everyone no offence Quote
Shadow Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 Hehe... ;) I'm a cheapster, I only buy something if its cheap :$ How does it stink? Have you smelled one to find out? :-D Quote
Evil Willy Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 Where did I see stink my good friend? Show me im puzzled!....Now how do you spell puzzled? I think this is it. Ok ill stop now. wow that was really cool I was typing and when i put in the period my song ended with a drum sound..it was soo cool! Ok im done now... Quote
KimT Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 Since I read the review and posted a replu in which I was quite happy about this new airport I've done some thinking. I still like the plane, but shuffling through my sets I found this, which in my opinion would have been great to use in an airport. All that is needed is a bigger version of this plane: This is more LEGO :oD KimT Quote
snefroe Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 nice plane! there are planes in all shapes and sizes, so you can easily use both for one airport... in fact, i think this one resembles the one i took when i went to billund. Quote
Kikuichimonji Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 That's a nice plane! But I suppose it was a promo... *wacko* Quote
KimT Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 That's a nice plane! But I suppose it was a promo... *wacko* NO not really - set# 4032. But it is an airline set - this one I bought while travelling with SAS. They are available with other airlines as well. BUt not in regular shops and on S@H - sadly. KimT Quote

Evil Willy Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 My good KimT why is there a picture of Jesus being crucified on your avatar? Quote

KimT are those parts printed ones or stickers? They're stickers - there's also a sticker sheet for LEGO lines along with the set - check my brickshelf folder under City and find set 4032 for more pics. As for my current avatar - it's an old fig I found. I once did a projekt while studying Religion in which we depicted the ikons of each religion - for Christianity I made this model of a crucified individual - whilst the other religions had others. Guess I'm sentimental in using that bad modification of a minifig for my avatar. KimT EDIT: Here's a pic of the additional stickers Quote
Sastrei Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 What are the pieces making up the windows in the corridor to the airplane? -Stefan- Quote
