ziljin Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 (edited) Not sure why, but I don't see any reviews on these sets? Since I have crummy, pics I don't see why I should make two separate topics. I recently bought 4 of each. I am sure most people are well aware of the lower quality of these minifigs, but if you don't this topic on Classic Castle will inform you. Never done a review before, so forgive me if its crummy. If anything, just consider this inspiration for someone to do a proper review of the two sets. EDIT: I created slideshows compiling these pictures. Box shot of Troll Battle Pack Group Shot. Pikemen with capes that have holes in it. IIRC same ones on the Troll King and Sorceress from the Mountain Fortress Set Standard Trolls with swords and shields Troll general with an earlier helmet, neck armor, doubled sided axe and shield. And the rat. Price 14.99 Pros: Neck armor for troll general 3 Shields Nice assortment of weapons Troll army builder Cons: Wish they included the troll king minifig head Lower quality minifigs (see classic castle thread linked above) A spear instead of an extra sword, or at least a different colored sword would have been nice. Neutral: Not sure what to think of the rat. Could be useful for vignettes I guess. The Dwarf Battle Pack Box Set Dwarf Group Shot. 3 Axmen and 2 miners, notice 2 beards are on backward. Pics of the heads and torsos under the beards. Three Crown torsos, and 2 Viking torsos Shots of both sides of the double sided head. Price 14.99 Pros: Different Helmets Very cheap source of dwarfs (compared to bricklink, well thats probably going to change as more people buy the battlepacks) 3 Battle axes and 3 shields 5 different heads, which helps diversify your other human minifigs if you swap heads Extra shovel, mallet and barrel Cons: Like the troll battlepack, lower quality minfigs. Could have used another weapon, but I guess you can take the flame off the torch and it becomes a club. Neutral: I have trouble taking the beards off, which is annoying that they have two of the beards on backwards on every Dwarf battle pack. Edited January 8, 2010 by lego40k Quote
Sir Dillon Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 Yes, your pictures are poor, but they could still give someone a better idea of what comes with the set. Thanks for taking the time to make the reviews. I was excited to hear about this run of battlepacks, but figures' lack of quality has put me off. Do you know if the first run (Crown Knights and Skeletons) were poorer quality as well? Quote

Do you know if the first run (Crown Knights and Skeletons) were poorer quality as well? From what I can remember, the earlier battlepacks don't seemed to suffer any of these. I have bought these battlepacks, and I still feel concerned of its quality, then again, the parts in there are quite useful, and if you mixed them into your bin, I don't think there is a very large difference. Then again, I will take a closer comparison later as I have just opened these sets up. Quote

It would almost be worth getting the dwarf pack for the extra beards and wingless helmets. Quote
NorthernKnight Posted October 3, 2009 Posted October 3, 2009 (edited) Quality issues aside, I have a few opinions on the contents of the sets. I recently bought the dwarf battlepack and like it, you get a nice assortment of dwarf accessories. I replaced the viking torsos with plain ones and got two vikings :) The troll one is however a sad sight due to lack of variation. Why oh why must all trolls (except two unique figs from the biggest troll set) have the same face? In this BP there are three torsos of the same kind as the majority of the trolls from the sets. Why not toss in a "Space troll" torso to spice it up a little (Space Police 3 Alien - Slizer). I have seven trolls, all from sets, and buying this BP would give me several duplicates of the ones i already have. Why two copies of troll warrior no3, which is already appearing in eight sets, with up to three of them in each? Adding a silly little rat just adds to the rodent-infestation problem of the current fantasy line. I would much rather have gotten a dog or a torch or something. I will definitely not buy the troll BP, spending 10 euro on a bunch of very common parts and two capes. Edited October 3, 2009 by NorthernKnight Quote
The Cobra Posted October 3, 2009 Posted October 3, 2009 I will definitely not buy the troll BP, spending 10 euro on a bunch of very common parts and two capes. You surely wouldn't have spent 10 euros, because that was 2008 BP price. This year they all cost 13 Euros each (and Knights and skellies seems to be sould out on S@H). Quote

If they only had them for a few months longer, and I could have a nice Crownie and Skeleton army. Quote
UsernameMDM Posted October 3, 2009 Posted October 3, 2009 Besides the quality issue, I really haven't bought any battle packs because I have enough minifigs from buying all the sets. Added in a dozen Viking torso, and BAM! Nice sized Crown army (and skeleton and troll, but not so much for the dwarves. Good thing they have the rock monsters on their side ). Quote
NorthernKnight Posted October 3, 2009 Posted October 3, 2009 they discontinued them unfortunately. If they only had them for a few months longer, and I could have a nice Crownie and Skeleton army. It is not too late, on Pick a brick on-line you can get a white skeleton with the happy skeleton head for 0.57 EUR. And they have black spears, axes and lances. I bought a bunch of these and use the red-eye skellies from the sets as officers. Quote

Actually I did order some of them through pick a brick to supplement my skeleton army. But the skeleton shields, helmets, and armor cannot be bought through S@H. Not going to BL them though, since a dollar spend at BL could be a dollar spent on S@H. Well hopefully they will continue the fantasy theme and have more fantasy minifigs in the future. Quote
chongcheng Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 I thought the lower quality only applies to the tic tac toe and chess sets - they are afterall offering a huge amount of minifigs for relatively small price. But lower quality for this...it is a quite unacceptable; it is not as if they offering this battle packs at half the price of the tic tac toe sets. Quote

Well the weapons, helmets, shields, and other accessories are the standard quality. And the minifig legs and heads look standard as far as I can tell. Just the torsos are lower quality. The battle packs have more weapon variety and minifig heads(at least for human and dwarf). But in the future, I guess I will get chess/tictactoe sets, impulse sets, and battlepacks. Combining them all together should result in nice diversity and numbers for a cheap price. Quote
Sir Wellington Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 Very nice looking pack to me. I like how LEGO is releasing the battle backs for various themes. Quote
Hound Knight Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 I was fortunate enough to get one each of the Knight and Skelly battle packs at LEGOland, and can't wait to order these! Thanks for the review! Quote
ziljin Posted October 6, 2009 Author Posted October 6, 2009 Very nice looking pack to me. I like how LEGO is releasing the battle backs for various themes. Well they usually have some sort of minifig pack. The battle packs are just more unified and more weapon oriented. Quote
Eilif Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Thanks for posting this quick review. I have the dwarf battle pack, and I didn't notice the difference when I purchased them. If it hadn't been mentioned here, I wouldn't have known. It's disapointing, but it doesn't bother me that much. I'm still going to buy one or two more just to get some more dwarfs before LEGO has a chance to cancel the line. Quote
